I know there are a few here who celebrate, so if that's you, wishing you a happy deepavali!

We're celebrating by going for dinner at an Indian restaurant, in little India, followed by a Bollywood movie (with subtitles, so the hubster can follow), burning some fire-crackers and eating tons of sweets! Also going to decorate our condo with diyas (little candles in hand-painted clay lamps) and making rangoli (floor art made with colourful powders)

I also dressed up for work by pairing my jeans and black shirt with a colourful hand-painted silk scarf and big dangly Indian jewelry. :wink2:

How are you celebrating today?

For those of us who have not had enough exposure to the world, could you kindly explain the holiday? I'll celebrate by learning more then!

Yes, happy Deepavalli!

Now where's my roti and curry and sev and karanji and chappattees and naan and and and... I waaaaaant! ;(

I really hate that we don't have more Indians in our town. I wonder if I can gatecrash tonight's Hindu Students Society's Social? Hmmm... I do have a sari here somewhere... Now if only I knew how to put it on!

Um, I'm not Hindu so my understanding is really flawed. All I know is that it's a festival of lights and I usually get sent plates of sweets.

I'm sure there must be more to it than this, so please correct me if I'm wrong!

Indeed, Diwali is the festival of lights! From Hindu mythology, it was the day when one of our Gods (Ram) defeated and killed the demon-king, Rawan. To celebrate, people in the town of Ayodhya (ancient city of India) lit diyas and lit fire-crackers.

Here's a wiki link on the festival: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diwali

We're celebrating tomorrow - we'll be cooking all day (and I'm going to try for some sweets that will hopefully be edible :halo: ).

Best part is that DH finally finished the Ramaynan - a 5month WIP - a couple of weeks ago :))

You must be kidding! Wow, colour me impressed. Even I have not read the Ramayana or the Bhagvat Geeta. He's putting me to shame!

I made shakkar pare last year. It was relatively easy, and an instant success. I don't have the recipe on me now, but here's one I found on the internet that is almost similar, if not exact:

FYI: I used plain ol' regular butter. Not as tasty, but my arteries survived the year!

This year I'm buying some kala jamuns and chum chums and calling it a day!

I love Diwali! And Indian sweets :lickout: ...and music and dancing.

Happy Diwali!

hey, that actually looks - doable!

I've got flour stewing for rasmalai, though we've got some boxes of the stuff too just in case 8) We got a whole bunch of new appliances I seriously cant wait to use ::)

DH and I swapped 'culture' books - I read his grandfather's memoirs on surviving the holocaust & rebuilding, he read the Ramaynan & Mahabharatha (if you're looking for English translations I recommend Menon's, the language is iffy but he doesn't "pre-screen" so it's all written out no matter how morally & ethically debatable - and some of it is definitely debatable!)

What movie are you guys going to?

Aaannnddd? How did the home-made rasmalai turn out? Fed-ex some down this way, will ya?!

Love how you both exchanged reading material! I'm afraid reading the Mahabharat/Ramayana is a tad bit too ambitious for me! I've never had much interest, to be honest. If anything, I'd like to have an English copy of the Gita.

We streamed 'A Wednesday' off Netflix. It has Nasheeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher. It wasn't too bad....not your standard song and dance! *phew*

I started my day right today - a chum-chum with my cup of coffee! Mmmm :lickout:

lol Kama - song and dance is about right, from what (little) I've seen :cheeky:

Rosetta don't feel bad, the rasmalai was a soggy, mushy disaster! But I opened a box and cooked it and added sugar and served it, so that counts as mostly homemade..right?
