As some of you may know, we had an unhappy ending with James Allen :(2 https://www.pricescope.com/communit...t-is-this-normal-for-online-retailers.233276/

Well, things happen for a reason. After the JA return, I was on the hunt again for a new stone...but had a cruise on the schedule in the way. I thought this might be a good opportunity to explore some settings and stones (just to compare pricing to online resellers like JA) from a few reputable island merchants. I searched the PS forums for feedback and recommendations. The only store mentioned on several threads was Balerina Jewelers, with stores in both St Thomas and St Martin, both stops on our ship.

So with a great deal of skepticism, I told my wife let's checkout Balerina and compare pricing with online merchants....and warned her it's just window shopping as prices are going to be much higher! We found Balerina in St Thomas and entered with caution. I told him exactly what I wanted...GIA only, XXX, round, HCA2, lower color K-M eye clean, and have been price shopping online back home. He showed us a gorgeous XXX round SI1 M 4.5ct for $30k...WOW, seemed to be priced fairly well against the online sites. But we needed pricing that started with a 2 not a 3.

He shows us a 4ct SI1 GIA cert M, but VG/VG/VG, and I go on the defensive about the cut... so I pull up the HCA cut adviser, and it scores a 3.4 to my surprise! I compared the two stones side by side and thought the 4ct was holding it's own against the larger XXX. A few settings are presented, basic, full bling, and something in btw. He offers the diamond @$23k in the basic WG band or $25k in full bling 1.25ct band...and can have it sized, mounted, and polished in UNDER ONE HOUR! JA had our previously purchased stone for over 2wks and nothing had been done...how can a small independent jeweler do this all in under 1 hour? :-o

a few rounds of haggling, and we agree on a price for the 4ct M VG/VG/VG set in the 1.25ct full bling WG band. They offered to change her old YG anniversary band to WG, no charge! Next they have us escorted to a secret upstairs jewelry workshop where around 10 people are hard at work. I hold the stone, they sized the band, and then the read numbers on the stone to verify it matches the printed GIA report. Next I go behind the counter to watch the stone get mounted. I'm blown away at how professional this operation is! We had the ring sized, diamond mounted, and polished in under one hour right in front of us!

She is beyond thrilled, and loves it! I am very thankful to the PS community for providing the resources that helped me choose a perfect stone at a great price! I would HIGHLY recommend Balerina Jewelers for the outstanding service, selection, and price! Pics coming soon...

Congratulations and so happy that your wife is thrilled!! Please share some hand shots. :)

OP I am glad that you had a wonderful experience with an independent jeweler and that you and your wife are satisfied with the purchase! Looking forward to seeing pictures. All the best to you.

So glad you found your dream ring, would love to see photos, pretty please. :D

Yay!! So glad to hear that this had a happy ending for you! And to echo others, would love to see photos/hand shots

Be sure to post your review in the testimonials section too!

More pics please!! I'm happy to hear that you and your wife are so happy with the outcome!

The immediate gratification from buying a stone and wearing it in an hours time is something that's unbelievable considering they had to size down the ring, mount the diamond, and buff the ring...we had asked a local jeweler about setting our JA stone. Quoted $500 and 10 days to set a stone.

Really makes you want to go hmmmmm....something doesn't add up.

Looks lovely, I'd have never guessed it's an M. Fantastic finger coverage.

Makes perfect sense to me? They are located in a vacation destination, so they probably cater to getting their customers their finished product quicker because most people don't vacation longer than a week.

That's wonderful! I'm glad you had a happy ending to your ring experience!!! Congrats! More pictures when you get a chance!

BTW...those pictures are blinding!

HI:

You sound very happy--wonderful trip and memories. Oh, and cool loot.

Enjoy!

cheers--Sharon

Nice!!!!!!! I'm confused about the wedding band though - they reset her stones in WG or it's an entirely new ring?

Beautiful ring and congrats! What is really nice is that you and your wife picked the stone and setting together and have created a great memory of the ring and the vacation. I agree- that it worked out as it should and I wish you two many years of happiness together!

Hello and Congratulations on your ring, it looks very beautiful on her finger.
I read that you got her at Ballerina Jewelers in ST. Thomas. I have many happy memories of Ballerina Jewelers but in ST. Martin and when I read you post I couldn't help but think about them and how they are holding up with the devastation in ST. Martin by Hurricane Irma. Irma took a direct hit at the island of St. Martin and they got destructive damage to the entire island. My heart goes out to all the people in St. Martin.
Don't mean to high jack your happy thread, this just brought back happy memories for me and my hubby who have purchased from Ballerina in ST. Martin on Front Street.
I keep wondering how they will rebuild and come back after all the mess Irma did.
I am happy your wife is thrilled with her ring, it fits her beautifully and is gorgeous!:appl:

I am very concerned about the safety of everyone at Balerina Jewelers. They are a family run business from what I understand. Hoping they were able to seek shelter and safety as the pictures don't look good for St Thomas or St Martin. Hope they are all safe and left the islands before the storm hit.
