Does anyone else watch these? I missed last nights, the first one I have ever missed. I was wondering if anything noteworthy happened? I am usually surprised by the prices he gets. Last night all of his pink diamonds were either I1 or I2, which is slightly unusual for him, but I suppose a sign that higher quality from Australia has slowed down as the mine is ending its final years.

Hi,

I don't believe the mine is closing. A more recent decision was made to keep it open.

Really? I haven't heard this.

I did a very quick search online and most places (including Rio Tinto) are still saying closure around 2018-2020ish. The diamond mining during this time will yield smaller diamonds than previously seen. Was there an article released recently?

Hi,

The mines were supposed to close in a year or so. The news must be what you have quoted 2018-2020-. That announcement from Rio Tinto is less than 6 months old.

Am I way off, or are even their starting prices high?

Re: Harod Seigel Fine Auctions

Such depressing news; prices of gems have gone up and will continue to rise. :(sad

Re: Harod Seigel Fine Auctions

Hi,

I think the internet has a lot to do with prices. Who would've thought that many people could sell and buy through all these outlets on the web. How many new people are collecting gems for jewelry and just plain collecting. I know I wouldn't be buying any of this if it weren't for the internet. This is a new market and since new demand has been created, well there go the prices. It is a boon of sorts.

One individual on a different thread said it annoyed her when people said they bought the gemstones cheaper several yrs ago and I don't want to offend her, but it is true that the prices keep jumping. I think it is the demand.

Its easier to price things if you are a seller. Just look at what others are getting for the same merchandise. Thus you may find it harder and harder to find deals. I saw that Kath sold her tsavorite today--possibly after the Gene report.

Oh they are indeed. I haven't seen a piece not sell though and they often go much higher than the starting bid. It always surprises me.

If the start bid is $14-15k it usually sells for around 20k.

I believe the 2018 closure date has been around much longer. I believe I first heard it back in 2005.

Here is an article from 2007 that mentions the 2018 closure: http://www.scmp.com/article/608918/hks-rich-and-famous-expected-snap-rare-pink-diamonds
