Has anyone been getting weird emails through LT lately?

I’ve had a couple emails from “potential buyers” that were a bit off. I’ll share more info if I’m not the only one.

Has anyone else experienced this lately?

I’ve been getting a lot of straight spam that’s obviously not legit...

I had one person give me an extremely lowball offer and a strange sob story, in addition the email contained some personal info about me that made me very concerned about everything I had ever shared online :/
Be careful, PSers!

Oh - like this? I edited it so all the identifying info was removed. I figured it was either someone hoping to try their luck or a reseller. I got quite a few offers I’d consider lowball - but they never bother me (shoot your shot, right?) so I didn’t think about it until you mentioned it...F93E92D0-32FF-46F6-8C83-01EC7951EBBF.jpeg

Yep word for word same as what I received. Did your email from them contain any of your personal info?

No this was basically the entirety of the email. Possible that they found you on multiple platforms and pieced it together?

Yes I believe that’s what happened. Figured I should alert PSers to be careful.

I listed my emerald cut AV unmentionable a while back when I was selling it. I got the weirdest emails..low ball offers...just creepy. I took it off...I’m very paranoid about people knowing anything about me...It’s scary how much information people can find out about you. I changed my email after that so people didn’t know my last name before an item got sold.

Creepy was my feeling, too.

Did any of the emails include your personal info? Or could you share anything about why they were creepy?

A few people used my first name when it wasn’t listed. They never answered if they were a PS’er...I got so creeped out I changed my email address and deleted all the mail in that account. The offers were really low with some weird story attached. I think they actually frequent here but don’t identify themselves. There was no way for them to know my first name. That’s really creepy.

Sounds fishy

Thank you for sharing that story. I am so sorry that happened to you but I feel less alone in my experience. Maybe I will change my email too.

I have received some strange emails. Mostly spam type emails, but also a couple of times I have had people tell me “I am .... from PS“, but as the communications continued, I wasn’t so sure about that. It’s kind of bizarre to think that people could be posing as known PSers, but something just didn’t feel right.
About the person that contacted you having your personal info, do you list an email address to contact you directly? You might want to google that email address and see what shows up. I’m not sure why, but one of my email addresses shows a lot of personal info when I google it, so I make sure to use one that doesn’t for LT.
The other concern I have is so many people using their PS user name as their LT name. I understand that there is comfort in feeling like you know the person you are buying from or selling to, but I would consider using two different names for privacy reasons.

There are weird people everywhere. Sure if someone has the inclination they can find out more “personal” information. Does it matter? Probably not unless they also have your date of birth, social security number, drivers licence and passport.
I read an interesting article on thieves. Apparently they have become lazy, rarely venturing out to break into your house or car like in the “olden days”, preferring instead to stay home and using a computer encourage you to send them money via Western Union or ITunes cards via Romance scams, Nigerian Prince scams, You owe tax scams, Trojan virus scams etc.
just take sensible precaution.
most people out there are normal.

I'm so sorry to hear about these unnerving experiences!

I have been nervous to sell on Loupe Troop because of this kind of thing. I was thinking about selling a few things on ebay. I think it will be more secure? The other option is selling through therealreal.com

Good tips. Thanks for sharing :)

I am working on scrubbing the internet clean!

Yes, your advice is good! I was quite upset until I realized that it was just unsettling but that I could protect myself in different ways.

Pros and cons with every option, I think. I’ve had great experiences on LT overall.

psssst, check your tag-line. I used it once or twice, but noticed it there

Where does someone find their tag line?

Mine says "Gemmological Magpie"
MamaBee has something below that blue line. I would have messaged this to her if I could.

*Edit, I see she said "when it wasn't listed". My bad.

I guess I should ask- do I have one? Is it something that’s only viewable when using a computer to view PS? I can’t see them.

You're right, I can see them on the desktop - they disappear on handheld phones (at least on my Android). You don't have a tagline or signature. You can add one on the profile settings.

Thanks! I appreciate you letting us all know :)
It would be easy to forget about the tag line if not on a desktop for a while.

Aside from a few strange inquiries and some spam, all of my actual LT sale transactions have gone perfectly and I’m thankful to have LT as an avenue to sell things. The instances I mentioned above that were strange involved low ball offers of around 25% of my asking price or asking me to ship things before they were paid for. I just politely declined and they never wrote me back. I still prefer LT since I don’t have to pay the 10% final value fee I would have to pay ebay, or the commission % I would have to pay therealreal.

@pearaffair Thank you for sharing this. I've been working on anonymizing myself a bit more online, and this was the (creepy) push I needed to keep moving forward.

And sometimes I get this message when going to a LT post:

Does that happen to anyone else? Or do you know what it means?
