Has anyone ever used a snap-tite setting? Are they secure?

http://www.jamminggems.com/scan/fi=products/st=db/co=1/sf=category/se=14kt%20Snap-tite%20Emerald%20Pendant/op=rm/nu=0/ml=50/tf=price/to=n.html?id=6y49oJJd&mv_pc=5452

I have never used them and I see little use for them. The designs aren''t that great.

I would be worried about size tolerance for the stones being set. They may be secure for the right size of stone, but a smaller stone would be loose and a larger one might be damaged because of too much pressure.

I have used them they are fine in pendants and earrings but not in rings.
I have set stones that can not be mentioned here in them for gifts for younger children.
They catch on things in rings.
Since my benchman doesn't charge a lot I just get the pre-notched and have him set them most of the time.
The pre-notched settings from them are very good for the price, they are light and somewhat thin but are well made.
I wouldn't use the pre-notched for a permanent ER ring but for a fun ring or a temp setting for a few years use they are fine.

jamminggems has been excellent every time I ordered from them.

I''ve used them as well. Pendants work great, earrings seem a bit light / flimsy and I did a solitaire round ring that was very sturdy. Shapes other than round are hard to get in straight. I did about a dozen round earrings and ended up selling them all but they are fine to use for basic stud earrings.

Thanks LD, Storm & Marcy,

Karl, I just ordered one, from Jamming, for a stone I can''t mention here, an emerald cut, as I''ve been interested in emeralds lately.

Since I thought just one item was not enough to justify shipping (how''s that for an excuse, but true actually) I also got a cheap blue topaz ring & peridot ring (both in sterling silver - to try that out.)

Thanks for telling me about them.

post some pics of the rings when you get them.

Your welcome

Thanks Storm. Here''s a link to the $17 topaz ring: http://www.jamminggems.com/163-265-0500swiss.html

I do wonder why I ordered those two days ago and have not received any sort of e-mail, though. I guess I should call.

Link furnished as I don''t have a camera that does macro.

Say, I''m a fellow storm/weather aficionado - what are your favorite seasons? I''m a severe fall & winter lover, Despise, despise, despise summer. One of the big reasons I didn''t stay in Calif. is that they don''t have much weather - only the occasional rain w. mudslide. I used to want to be a meteorologist, actually.

like that setting and the stone should be pretty the topaz I have seen from them were very nice.

The topaz ring will be lovely.

Oh Storm, received some things from Jamming today. Thanks so much for telling me about them ! !

Report -

Blue topaz ring in ss - lovely ! A beautiful brilliant blue that pops ! Cut is quite nice, no window, something like a Portuguese cut. I''ve seen worse cuts on much more expensive stones.

(Sorry, but I like blue topaz. Some think it''s rather "yuck" but what''s not to like about a bright light blue? Yes, I do have tastes that run to "finer" things too.)

Same ring in peridot - stone is a light crisp apple green with a slight touch of yellow. Great spring/summer color and the same nice cut.

Also received a pear blue topaz pendant and an oval peridot pendant - nice. But, the rings are super for the price. Overall - very happy.

I also got an emerald cut snaptite pendant setting for a "you-know-what". Now I set the emerald cut down on top of it - it doesn''t fall into the setting, it sits on top but the size is close. Am I supposed to pull out the prongs a little or just turn it all upside down and push?

Thanks, Sonoma

I love blue topaz also.

Set the stone table down on a double layer paper towel over a hard surface.
Then set the setting over the stone make sure the ends aren't going to dig into the stone and gently and evenly push down until the stone snaps into the setting.

How hard does a stone have to be to use these settings? Peridot isn''t the hardiest of stones, but what about fluorite or apatite - would they "survive"?

I have nothing against blue topaz or other treated stones. Not every ring should be a LM masterpiece with a flawless, unheated sapphire. Sometimes, we need things that are just fun.

Ruby sapphire spinel garnet with thickish girdles.
With great care tourmaline and quarts.
Anything expensive have it set in a pre-notched by a pro at the min.
They are best used with synthetics to be honest.

Did you get it mounted?

I''ve bought lots of setting from them too. I''ve only used the snap-tite ones for earrings, studs and a few leverbacks. I''ve done several pendants and rings in the prenotched and set the stone myself. A small pair of jewelry pliers works good. It''s not a pro job, but great for "fun" pieces.

Storm - Probably will do it tomorrow. It's hard to get certain things done with a little one (young child) around. I'll report as soon as I do it
( - mangle it ?

). Thanks for asking. I'm just adoring the new $17 blue topaz ring, though.

Cool, Mustang. Do you like the pre-notched better than the snap-tite? Thanks for your post.

The pre-notched seem to be thicker/sturdier. But, they''re a pain with pointy cornered stones! I ended up cracking an emerald cut tourmaline trying to get the corners straight. For the square/emerald stones I tend to buy ones that have the prongs on the flat sides of the stone, or stick to rounds, ovals, pears or hearts. I haven''t had any stones fall out that I''ve mounted, so they seem pretty secure.

I''ve also bought from "Liebcorp", an ebay seller. They have pretty much the same stuff, but a few different designs and lots more in different colors of gold. I recently bought a white gold filagree ring mounting from them and had my jeweler mount a 1/2ct champagne diamond in it.

Thanks Mustang. I admire that you did that yourself. Good going, even with the crack and all. I guess it is to be expected, sometimes, when you set something. Esp., if you are not really a setter. Oh, I can''t find Liebcorp. Do you have a link for their store, perhaps?

Thanks Storm. The ----- -------- emerald cut is now in the snap-tite. Fairly easy, however, had to do it face up, as face down the stone just slides around too much. It looks really pretty, too. Jamming is a great site.

Thanks Mustang.

You know the first time I wore the Snap-tite (a few days ago) - the darn emerald cut "--" that I put in it (and thought was secure) fell out and has yet to be found. I''m hoping it''s in my house somewhere.

So much for finding a good cheap thing with Snap-tites.

Sorry you lost your stone! Try the pre-notched next time, I''ve never lost a stone out of those.

Thanks Mustang. OK, so do to do a pre-notched, I get a pair of jewelery pliers and just snug the prongs in? Do I wrap the plier jaws in a cloth or something so as to not scratch the stone? Can you recommend a pair or type of pliers to get. I''m up for playing around with it a little (should I find it). I believe it''s in the house here somewhere.

Perhaps the emerald cut -- will come back when it gets cold or hungry or something?

I found it (the "stone") ! !

It was in the bathroom. Not that it was valuable but it was sort of made that project more disheartening.
