Have you done a price check on your diamond?

I didn’t know that I could use Stone Algo like I do Zillow, lol. I plugged in my cert number and it literally gave me a price estimate! Check it out!!!

What! That is cool. My price estimate is a lot more than I paid a few years ago.

Too bad it’s only for GIA certs!

Wow that worked! Amazing!

It is very cool!
Pretty much all stones with GIAs have been loaded onto a database, making analysis ( and automation) possible.
There's software designed for the wholesale market that allows me to simply enter a GIA report number- and it will fill in all the other details.

BUT....I caution using the prices on the site referenced as "gospel"
I checked two stones that we have in our possession, and are offering for sale.
In one case, the Algo site was 25% more than our asking price- and with the other stone it was about 15% less than our asking price.....
Prices are extremely "fluid" at this moment- more than I can remember....so there's that.....

Hmm. Says a fair price for my .44 Fancy Intense Green Yellow is $463.00 If anyone has one for sale, I'll buy it from you right now!

The site couldn't find my GIA report for my chameleon. It did price my WX as 4 times higher than I bought it for, so that's nice. But it seems geared more to alphabet diamonds than colored?

I wish it took AGS, I'd like to play!

But take computer generated estimates (for any item) with a GIANT grain of salt.

Zillow's "zestimates" for houses are notoriously off.

For many years our home's "zestimate" was more than 100K lower that what our home was actually worth. Now, the opposite is true...the "zestimate" is more than 100K above our home's value. We just refinanced, and had two live human home appraisers appraise our home (both can in within 10K of the same number) so I know exactly what our property is currently worth. Zillow's estimate was $175K higher than our home's actual value.

I know. Ours jumped about $100,000 in a couple of weeks, lol.

Same! For home value, I like to look at all the sites—trulia, redfin, etc.
to gauge my diamond, I like to compare similar stones.

So true!!!!
For fancy colors.....the site is so far off that it's useless.......

Then...there's the fact that stones that are indeed available on our site are shown as "off the market"

We could easily make the case that sites like this one- and Zillow- do more damage to the market by providing sketchy info as factual than actually assisting consumers.

I recall that at the time of my upgrade, I used the rare carat price check and it was right on! This was after I had purchased my stone. So rare carat does it too. I think these two combined can give consumers some range, kind of like kbb, car guru, etc. for cars; all of course require a more accurate analysis.

Yes, even a broken clock is right twice a day:)

Clearly, for PS readers the site is an interesting and informative experience....for the uninitiated ( the heathen who are unaware of PS)....worse than useless IMO......

The site also does not take old cuts into consideration, and the differing availability/rarity and fashion/trends can change estimated value a lot compared to modern cuts. Just ask anyone who has tried to find a match for their own stone!

The plot thickens....it turns out that the site's real purpose is to sell diamonds.
In that regard....very interesting how the site shows the price sites were charging for the stones over time...that is a cool feature for sure.
