i taught my dad when he was 55 yrs old and all nervous behind the wheel

or my teenage daughter, whom had no fear behind the wheel.

Yup, gave them to my brother when he was 15. I was 19 and had just bought a brand-new Honda Civic. I was so nervous, but he was so excited! So I took him to a big parking lot that was mostly empty to get some practice. It was scary because he would drive really close to others cars and the light poles, but for the most part, he did well.

Well, fast forward 6 years later. He has been in 3 accidents, one where he totaled the car (ran into a cement wall

), has had numerous speeding tickets and generally drives like an a**hole! He lives in San Antonio, TX now, and last year I went down there for a couple days to visit him. OMG, I thought I was going to die! We get in his convertible (which he hasn''t finished paying the loan off with my grandma yet for

) and get on the highway to go to his apartment. He doesn''t look in his mirrors before changing lanes, gets right on the tail of the car in front of him before he stops, and he goes 90 mph with one hand on the wheel while he looks for a CD which are scattered on the floor of the car

.

I guess I did a bad job!

I gave my daughter driving lessons until I could stand it no more. I was a nervous wreck. We gave her some private lessons from a driving school and that actually lowers her insurance rates. Man was I scared when she was first learning. She has had one minor accident, but is actually a good driver now, knock on wood!!!!!

Well I offered to teach my friend''s daughter how to drive a stick upon completion of her driver''s ed course. I''ll let you know how that goes. I think that since it''s not my own kid I''ll be more patient. I had a very patient teacher, this guy I dated in high school, who taught me to drive a stick. Time for me to pay it forward and since my own kid is not yet of driving age, I can practice on my friend''s daughter. At least I can''t kill her. I just hope she don''t kill me.

Ha ha, hey Kmom, my husband tried to teach me to drive stick many years ago while we were just dating. Bless his heart, I am not the easiest person to teach! I must have killed that car 50 times!! Then he tries to explain to me what is going on in the engine everytime I switch gears, hit the clutch, etc. I''m like '' just teach me how to drive it without cutting off the engine. I don''t need a lesson in how a car works!'' Needless to say, I didn''t learn

Some years later, I joined the military as a truck driver. The first day I get to my new unit, they assign me my truck. I got outside to take a look at it, open the door and see the huge gear-shifter in the middle
6.gif
I was dumbfounded! I turned around and asked "um....I''m sorry, can I have an automatic please?" They almost laughed me out of the military!! Then when I said I didn''t drive stick, they basically said, YOU DO NOW!! It was awful, I literally had to learn how to drive it on the actual street with cars zipping around me! But I got it down and now.....I drive stick!!! woo hoo, who needs husbands?! Ok, ok, I DO!

I taught my DH to drive a stick some years ago, we nearly ended up killing each other after 5 minutes!
29.gif

Hee hee, Lorelei, that same thing happened when my stepmom tried to teach my dad!! My dad is the world''s most impatient man, I think he lost his temper after a minute and slammed the steering wheel with his hand, followed by a slew of explitives!
9.gif

Owwwwwwwwwwww!!! Don''t they get angry so quickly with this?
31.gif
The thing that annoyed me most was how PATRONISING DH was - I could have strangled him
11.gif
We still squabble when he is at the wheel to this day, I am the world''s WORST back seat driver!!
36.gif
My driving of course is wonderful !!
17.gif
17.gif
Seriously he is not that bad, he just will NEVER stop and ask for directions - drives me nuts
20.gif

LOL, I usually drive because I have the better car! Every now and then I will let him drive my car, usually if I don''t feel good or am tired. I also have a really good sense of direction, I almost never get lost, I always know where I am, even if it''s my first time being somewhere. Well, if HE gets lost, I will say "oh, you need to turn right at that light up there" and he thinks I''m kidding or something. He doesn''t listen! He''ll go past the light and keep driving!! I''m like, "HELLO! Did you not hear me?!" and he''ll say "I heard you, but I think you''re wrong"
20.gif

Then the inevitable happens: we are REALLY lost and he goes "I though you knew where we were!"
6.gif
yeah, idiot, I did! BACK WHEN YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO TURN RIGHT AT THE LIGHT!!!!!!!!!!

My male cousins (have a ton of them) used to sit around and joke about girls being bad drivers....so to prove them wrong, I signed up for private driving lessons, and aced the driver''s test, got a 98 I believe, they all got barely passing scores of 70 or so. Then they started taunting me about how it was easy to pass because I only drove an automatic....well, I got one of my cousins to loan me his car (which was a stick) went out practiced for a few hours, and learned to drive one, and proceeded to buy my very first car in a stick shift the following week. All because I was hotheaded broad that didn''t want to be belittled for being the only girl in a family of boys.

I later taught my younger brother and another girl-friend of mine to drive stick. I took them to remote parking lots, and cemetaries :) If they run over anyone, the person''s already dead and buried anyways.

BTW, I think I''m the better driver between my husband and myself, even though HE always wants to be in control and drive when we go out together. He crashed my Lexus RX330 on July 4th! I just got the damage estimate, $6500 worth!

My dad tried to teach me how to drive on a stick shift. I was doing alright until I killed it at the bottom of the parking lot and had to start it going uphill. Needless to say, I laid a patch once I finally got it going and finished learning on my mom''s automatic minivan.....

Now, all I''ll ever drive are manuals.

I taught my husband to drive a stick too. He''d had some practice before though, so it was pretty easy.

you guys think learning to drive a stick was easy? sure it's easy now!!! well....let me see you guys learn on a 1960's-70's american car (like i did) that weights 4000 + lbs with no PS,no hydraulic clutch (boy was that clutch stiff
6.gif
) and do a parallel park up hill.
6.gif
that's the way it was in teh old days.
2.gif
so... just because you can drive today's stick shift that doesn't mean you can drive all stick shift cars, completely different animals.

Out of interest automatics are rare in England, nearly everyone drives a stick. I don''t know if this is still the case, but if you pass your driving test in an automatic, you are not legally qualified to drive a stick shift. I can drive either, but prefer a stick.

I''ve given my housemate lessons on driving a stick shift in a snow-covered parking lot. We both survived, but I''m not sure she remembered anything I showed her ;)

This is the third season I''ve been taking my car to the racetrack. I cannot stand driving with certain people who don''t understand vehicle dynamics, braking, or control... it scares me to think of the poor education I got before I got my license. I''m a big fan of the teen driving clinics that force the students to put their car into spins, do slaloms, and learn to brake correctly. I applaud the instructors who hop in the passenger seat to talk the kids through it!

That said, even though my fiance and I both started driving on the track at the same time, I detest having him in the car with me when I''m driving. He''s going to start training to be an instructor next year.. there''s no way he''ll be instructing me, since I''ll throw him out of the car before the first turn.

Sounds like I have another customer for my Husband Ejector Seats!

A friend of mine was 2 chicken to teach his daughter how to drive so I got talked into it.
Wasn''t too bad except when she couldn''t get the hang of people going strait have the right away unless you have an arrow at stop lights!!!
25 hours later in 2 hour sessions we both survived.
My pay?
12 home cooked meals.
Yummy!

i haven''t had to teach anyone yet (but my youngest sister turns 16 in 2 years so we''ll see!)...but when my mom was teaching me back when i was a young 15...one day she made me so nervous i peeled out of the garage in reverse, curved the car across the driveway and almost took out our mailbox. i ended up partway in the street and on the sidewalk, my mom said, get out, i''m driving!!
