I absolutely love the heart pinky ring Leota posted (I think the date was January 2004?). I was thinking about finding a jeweler to create a similar ring, but for my ring finger. Any suggestions on carat size for the heart diamond? I know very little about designing a ring or finding a good jeweler, so any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Also, is this the best place to post a question like this??

Thanks!!!

Can you find the picture of it so that those of us who missed it can see what we are dealing with?

Here is the post where Leota posted her pinky ring. (You will need to copy and paste in your browser as I cannot get link to work)

My opinion from the picture is it is about 1/2 carat weight, notice it is surrounded by two rows of small diamonds.

PS.
Just noticed that Leota says in the first post that she thinks the centre is about 0.28 carat.

There are not too many ready made settings for hart cut diamonds.... so you may want to start looking for a jeweler to make you one rather than scoop up a ready-made example.

As for the stones themselves, these diamonds are usually very shallow and, in consequence look more like glass chunks than anything else. Most hart shapes look large compared to the rounds of the same weight, but at the expense of decent light return. There is a version of the AGA charts for this shape, and, of course, you should see some. I find that the outline of the stone is quite important, once good symmetry and decent proportions are in place, and shape is entirely a matter of choice.

Here's one from the Diamondsbylauren site... I just could not paste a link to the picture, in this case.

There are a couple of nice designs with hart shape diamonds on the Icestore sote - all with fancy color stones. The rings are nice examples regardless of what you want them made with, and if you have your ring custom made, it is a good idea to have design options at hand, sure so.

Yep, they're right... It doesn't have the greatest light return. I mean, it does have sparkle... and the whole heart shape thing is real cute. But I didn't want to spend a great of money on something that was just "cute"... that's why I got it as a pinky ring and not something bigger to fit on my other fingers.

Thanks for the settings ideas. The rings are gorgeous!

I was wondering how the light return of a well cut heart diamond compares to a well cut emerald, a poorly cut radiant, and/or a so-so cut princess. I have seen these in person on friends rings, but I have not seen a heart diamond in person yet. I am not in a hurry, and would like to gather as much knowledge as possible before I purchase anything.

Also, do the pave diamonds give a lot of sparkle/fire?

Good question... I have not seen any "rating" of what light return potential the different shapes have. From limited visual experience, I would say that hart shapes are somewhat alike trillions - not really reflective. The shape is the least "symmetric" of them all, with light getting lost around the sides of the stone: the bonus of this is an unusual pattern of scintillation though. It is rather hard to get to see a well cut hart at all: the usual, shallow ones really look like glass - one wanders what are those random facets good for! So ? The shape itself was definitely not designed with light return in mind, so I would only consider the very best cut to produce better sparkle in a hart shape diamond than what is expected from a trilliant.

Not being a step cut, I would not know what to say about comparing harts and ECs. Harts may aspire to the 'sparkle' of an average oval, perhaps. Of course, all this is really my own impression. I hope your Q gets more professional attention, since there is so little about hart shapes around here.

About pave, well, it does make a stryking difference to have those little stones clean, white and well cut. Here's an older thread about this I remembered of. It should ve farely easy to find some high quality pave at some jewelry store, and get past th usual jewelry store mantra that "it does not matter these are I1, the stone sare so small!".

Yes, sure, but they are so many!

It really shows when those little diamonds are I1 or VVS and given their size, top quality does not mean ten times the price either.

Hoping this too long a post helps somewhat...
