Hello, I've read these boards off and on for several years but always have way more to look at than post. Most of my personal jewelry collection is pearls and a few smaller pairs of diamond studs. BUT, that is all changing! I recently inherited several pieces of jewelry that belonged to my late grandfather's previous (deceased also) wife. She had no heirs and I was close with him, so most of her jewelry has passed to me. I took both rings to Union Diamonds here in Atlanta and they could not have been more wonderful looking at them and cleaning them for me, I will be taking a few things to them to be reset soon! I have NO idea what, if anything, I will do with these. I'm nowhere close to being engaged anytime soon, and I really am not a round girl anyway. My preferred shapes are aschers and emeralds, but it will be hard to pass on this whopper.

Included in the collection are two gorgeous rings, including this massive solitaire. I wasn't expecting it, had never seen any of these pieces, and when the ring box was open I literally gasped! I didn't even fully believe that it was real until the jeweler looked at it.
This is about 40 years old and is set in a four prong 14k white gold setting. It is about a size 6.5 (I wear a 5.5) and was with an eternity band of 32 single cut diamonds that throw off a lot of sparkle.

Carat weight for the solitaire we estimated at around 2.25 ct. Estimated clarity is VVS1-2 but it could be IF,it is very white but obviously it's hard to get a read when the diamond is set. It seems to be pretty deep at about 5mm, it is 8.5mm in diameter and the table is 5mm. The eternity band diamonds are SI, everything looks pretty white and a few stones are a little loose.

The second ring has a beautiful Old English cut stone that is a true heirloom. It was my grandfather's mother's and dates back to the late 1800s. The stone was reset in the 1960s into the current setting which is broken in several places. It appears to be at about 1 carat and fairly well cut for the time. It reflects a lot of light and is very sparkly in person. I believe I like it more than the large stone and wish I had two to turn into studs!

This necklace came along for the ride as well. The center stone is exceptional and appears to be 1.75 ct with 14 other small diamonds. It looks flawless so far unless something is hidden under a prong. The chain is quite heavy and a little long for my taste. It came from Maire & Berkele who were a high end jeweler here in Atlanta (bought by Mayor's). I wish I could truly capture the beauty of these stones! One of the guys at Union Diamond was very impressed with this piece and the center stone and he truly delighted in telling me all about it :)

I like it much better when it's just a few inches shorter:

There are a few other pieces, some bracelets, pins, another ring, etc. that I may post as well :)

Wow, those are fabulous. I see your conundrum though - what will you do with all of that bling?!? It's a pretty great problem to have though. :-D

beautiful pieces

Re: Heirloom Rings and Necklace, including 2.25 round and OE

Beautiful! It is so nice to have those treasured family pieces. If I was in your situation I would probably have the large modern RB recut into an ideal since it is not an antique, I bet you could specify not to go below 2ct. That is what I did and I went from 2.24 to 2.06 and improved the optics so much. You might enjoy it more that way.

Wow, exceptional stones!

Re: Heirloom Rings and Necklace, including 2.25 round and OE

Wow, gorgeous pieces. I especially love the necklace. You could have the chain shortened to 16". You could also have Brian Gavin recut that huge solitaire, and you could reset the beautiful smaller stone. How nice that you received such a wonderful inheritence.

Gorgeous pieces (and big too!)...enjoy wearing them...i can't wait to see what you do with them if you plan on resetting them.

Re: Heirloom Rings and Necklace, including 2.25 round and OE

All beautiful but the necklace is to die for!

Re: Heirloom Rings and Necklace, including 2.25 round and OE

Wow! How fabulous! I second the idea of having Brian recut the 2+ carat stone to ideal. The necklace is lovely and would make such a pretty wedding necklace. You could always have it rhodium plated if you prefer white metals. And if you haven't already, please get insurance on these pieces immediately!

Insurance YES! Or if that proves too expensive, please put them away in a safety deposit box. Enjoy all of that wonderful new bling! :appl:

Wow, what beautiful eye candy. Lovely heirloom pieces. :appl:

I would have the necklace shortened to a length that looks nice on you. I agree that it is too long for you now. I would guess that the former owner had a larger neck than you do. That necklace is a very nice and dressy piece.

I'd have the 1 ct stone set into a simple pendant for use now as an everyday pendant.

I agree with the other posters that the larger stone could be recut and worn as a ring when you are ready.

Thank you so much for showing us this awesome bling. :wavey:

I agree with the re-cut.

Re: Heirloom Rings and Necklace, including 2.25 round and OE

Thank you so much for all the lovely comments! I can't believe such beautiful things have been hidden away for over 30 years.

Insurance - thank you for the suggestion! I have been on that already. All of the pieces except for one have already gone into a safe deposit box. The largest diamond I will probably be hand-delivering to GIA to be graded soon. I think the recut is a GREAT idea, so thank you to all of you that suggested it. Would it be smart to have it graded first, or do you think I could send it directly to Brian Gavin? Does anyone know a ballpark of what a recut might run?

I did keep one piece out for the moment. I wore the big diamond and the band on my right hand for a day and really fell in love with the eternity band. I'm wearing it now on my right middle finger, the simple elegance of it and the vintage feel are lovely on my small hands. In the far future I would love to get two matching sapphire bands made to wear with it. I certainly hope that's not blasphemous, to wear another's wedding band. I have tried very hard to feel sentimentality for these pieces but I find I can't since I never met and wasn't blood related to the original owner. I do feel incredibly fortunate, however, and intend to keep and continue to pass down everything.

FlyGirl, are you an FA? I am too :appl:

You are one lucky girl! I agree with everyone else. A recut on that large stone would make it glow. I dont think
there is any reason to GIA it now. I would send it off to Brian. I've never had a re-cut done but it all depends on
the size of the stone. From what I've heard it cost in the $200-$300ish range but not sure what size stones those
were.

Very nice start to a collection!

I'm an Instrument rated Private Pilot. Took up flying as my mid-life crisis, apparently. I guess I like expensive hobbies- flying and gemstones, which don't mix well, BTW. The preflight tends to be greasy.

I took some photos here of Cloud Dancing. Low and slow is my speed. :wavey:

Wow, Kalyn! Those pieces are beautiful!

I am pea green with envy!

Would love to see pictures of the other items, if you'd like to post them...

Re: Heirloom Rings and Necklace, including 2.25 round and OE

Beautiful pieces! I think it's wonderful that you're planning to wear them and love them - that's not blasphemous at all! One thought occurred to me: since you like the older cut more, and are planning to recut the honker ... why not contact Good Old Gold and see if they can recut it as an August Vintage Round?

Re: Heirloom Rings and Necklace, including 2.25 round and OE

I wouldn't dare recut or change any of them, with the exception of resetting the broken gold band. Maybe turn that into a pendant? Or, make the big stone ring a pendent.. and get a matching diamond for the smaller one? (Of course, if it's such a sentimental piece, maybe an earring would be far, far too risky). Enjoy them.
