Hello all!
So sorry to report that my emerald cut eternity band has become way too small.
It's a size four (which fit my finger perfectly when I got it 12 years ago) and now I'm up to a size five and who knows where my fingers are going from there!
I haven't gained any weight but my ring finger has a mind/body of it's own.
I was thinking about resetting the fourteen .80 stones into a new ring.
I do have a trusted local jeweler that I have bought many things from with a great bench.
Do any of you wise PS'ers have any experience with resetting an eternity band?
Thanks in advance.

I had David Klass reset a round and baguette platinum band. The diamonds were bar set. I had him prong set them into a new setting. He did a beautiful job. I trust him with everything. If you need another emerald cut diamond you can also ask him to source it for you. He sourced diamonds for me many times. Good luck!

Thanks MamaBee! What was the approximate cost? Just ballpark?
Thanks for letting me know if you don't mind.

@Rubies-R-Me Before moving forward with the reset, could you ask your jeweler if the inside could be filed down to create a larger size. My previous eternity was snug and my jeweler said that was an option since the gold was so thick. I ended up selling it instead.

I concur with this advice. I’ve also had the inside of eternity bands polished enough to allow some extra size.

@Rubies-R-Me I had it reset last year. It doesn’t seem right because it was reset in platinum. It’s also a half band..not an eternity…It cost me $800. I’m now having a simple bezel ring done that costs more than that. I know his prices went up a little bit..but still very fair.

:wavey:Hi donnabrsd. That's great advice.. I actually just had that done to a narrow E/W baguette eternity band that I bought recently. That was a 4.5 and they were able to make it into a 5.
I will ask the jeweler about that solution first. Not sure if it could be increased a whole size though but who knows! Maybe!:D

:wavey:Thanks Slickk! It would be the easiest solution that's for sure.

:wavey:Hi! That does sound very fair. I was figuring it would be a few thousand dollars (plus the cost of a new stone if needed) to make a whole new setting. Glad you got such a reasonable deal on yours!

It would make sense that it would cost at least $2k if David did it. Yours is a full eternity with many stones to set. It doesn’t hurt to ask him. He’s very nice.

Thanks! I will definitely consider reaching out to him. That's a good suggestion.:appl:

HI:

I did reset a full MRB eternity ring, but it was because I didn't like the old setting. There was no sizing issue or adding more stones. What I do recall was sticker shock--unsetting & resetting stones, + a new mount. And that was years ago but it was $$ well spent. I wore it for ages, until my friend "needed" it!! And by then I had my asscher eternity.

Your present setting is all stones. SO wonderful--no extra metal. If you choose a new mount that provides a bit more space between the stones, you might get extra size, you might not be as happy with the aesthetic. KWIM?

For some reason, my hands are ever changing. Same body , bigger hands. I don't know anything about shaving down rings but it might prove a temporary measure as organic things like our bodies change more than metal.

I don't wish to be a -ve person. But if you were to add another diamond, it would not be inexpensive but perhaps a longer term solution. And you can always add sizing balls if it is a little loose cuz of the extra diamond.

You have options. Investigate!! But don't throw that baby out with the bathwater!!!!!

Keep us updated.!!! :wavey: :wavey:  I like fun projects.

cheers--Sharon

Hi @Rubies-R-Me! I was going to say what @canuk-gal did - but she said it all so well, I’ll just ditto her! Adding an additional stone, making the new band a size or so too large, and having a horseshoe sizer or something like that put in - about as future-proof as reasonable, I think!

Of course a new band would be “too big” right now, though, by design, and hence the need for the sizer… One concern with this is comfort. This band has some depth just from the stones alone! Would your fingers adjust to an extra ~1mm of height off the finger?

Hi Sharon!
Thanks for your thoughts of all of this. I especially like when you said to not throw the baby out with the bathwater. I was kind of thinking of doing that.. I have daughters with size 4 fingers who love jewelry (only one is married at this point though) and I was going to save it for them. Then I started looking at similar eternity bands that were a size larger but not half as nice as this one. I agree that since the stones are set so close together it's extra special. That's what kind of got me thinking about resetting it instead of letting the bathwater solution happen.
Also interesting that your hands have changed.. I don't even think it's the knuckle.
The just kind of went from a 4.25 to a 5 within a year. I guess it's aging.
My feet didn't get any bigger though!
I wouldn't mind adding a stone.. or maybe even half a stone if that's what it needed. Like a fat baguette.. or maybe it needs a whole stone.
I shall keep you updated.. I will work on getting ideas this summer.
Or maybe wait for a year and see if my fingers keep growing!
It's a nice project! I agree!
Thanks for the input.:wavey:

Hi yssie!!
I like your term "future proof!!" Yes.. I think that's a good idea to make it a half a size larger than I am now (a 5.5) and add shots or a horseshoe to keep it stable.
I also would hold onto the old setting so in the future my daughters could technically put the stones back into it if they want it a size 4 again or just wear it in it's new size as a middle finger ring. I can't make it too large because as you say it does have a lot of depth and even when it fit just right it was pretty thick between the fingers.
Thanks for your input on all of this!:wavey:

Do you know if Tiffany’s does inside horseshoe sized things? Sorry to threadjack, but I’ve always wondered.

I have no help with the resize. But I can't help to notice the prongs of the band, OMG, are they hearts?

That’s exactly what I noticed and think is so lovely!

:wavey:Hijack away Diamondyes! I did have a ring sized at Tiffanys in the last few years where they added a sizing bar (not balls) to the inside of the ring. It laid flat against the ring though.. it wasn't attached at a small point and then most of it away from the ring. Does that make sense? Hard to describe.. sorry.

Thanks fussykiki! Yes! That's what I thought too when I first saw the ring.. the heart prongs are so charming.

Yes! Thanks foxinsox! I felt just the same way.
Would try to have the same prongs if I have it redone.

Oh my gosh really?!!! I have a Schlumberger 16 stone that has been waiting for me to get old with swollen knuckles lol. If I could get a sizing bar in it..: that would be amazing! Could you possibly share a pic of what they did to yours? Thank you for this info!

Hi!
Here is a picture of the sizing bar that was put in by Tiffany.
I also posted a pic of a 16 stone ring that I had Tiffany put balls in. Both rings were only going down half a size though. Hope that's helpful to you. :wavey: 6E32CDC0-8BA1-48F3-9490-C262BB049071.jpeghelpful. :wavey:

Oh this is so so helpful!! Thank you! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it! Was it terribly expensive to get this done?

Oh so glad that it was helpful.
It was a few years ago so I'm a little fuzzy on the details.
The bar was maybe $100 and the balls were $50ish?
That's a ballpark though.
Unfortunately I think the prices have gone up.
I recently went to Tiffany to have the balls removed as my finger has gotten fatter.
It was $120 to just remove the balls!
But who knows.. sometimes I think it depends on the rep you get.
Good luck!! I hope that it's a pleasant situation for you when you go.
As far as the 16 stone ring being too big.. for many of my rings that were too big I used to stack a very very thin band on top and that would hold the bigger ring on.
The super thin ones that they sell on etsy.
Something like this. I bought mine years ago and that seller doesn't sell them anymore but it was similar to this.

This is so helpful, thank you! I was just worried it would be like $800 or something utterly obscene.

The thin gold band idea is a very good one, too! Thank you!

HI:

I need my plain Tiffany band sized up. It is 2mm. Was quoted $150 @ Tiffany.

cheers--Sharon

They don’t seem to carry that band in yellow gold anymore. Might be worth going for it!

Thanks for the heads up MGR! I definitely want to keep it--worth it for me to size up.

Yes - as popular as yellow gold is today, I was surprised. None of the US stores have it in stock although they didn’t go so far as to say it was discontinued.
