Good Day,

I've been lurking on these forums for a while and have been incredibly impressed by everyone's knowledge and helpfulness. I've decided to register in hopes of some help! Hopefully one day I can return the favor! :)

I've been looking for a H & A cut ~1.25 carat diamond to go with a Tiffany style setting. I'd like the diamond to be at least G and VS2 for the the color and clarity respectively.

Here are the options I'm considering:

I've been doing my best to interpret the Ideal Scopes and Asets, but I'm definitely new to this. Looking forward to hearing your feedback and suggestions!

Thanks!

Re: Help & Advice on 1.25 Carat Diamond (Table %)

I just had one more question come up while looking around: How does a larger table affect the look and light characteristics of a diamond? When comparing the following two diamonds with tables of 55.9% and 54.4%, I'm not sure if I will even notice this, but it did seem like a fairly measurable difference. Thanks again!

negligible difference in table size.

Thanks for the reply. Considering how close these diamonds appear in their stats, is there anything in your mind that really differentiates them?

Nope, not really. Nothing in the ASET/IS, numbers comes out bad. All these are rejection tools, not selection tools.

Thanks again. I guess the bottom line is you'll never really know for sure until you see it. For this reason, I guess I am uneasy buying online, even with the return/exchange policies. Do you find yourself more comfortable picking stones out in person, or have you found a trustworthy online vendor?

Truthfully, not one single local jeweler carried an inventory of top cut quality stones, so it was impossible to buy locally. The selection from these vendors who specialize in top cut quality stones makes it the absolute easiest way to buy a diamond! As long as you stick with AGS0 (Ideal) and GIA Excellent (with some parameters) then you really can't go wrong. G VS2 is very safe, and the only question I would ask is if any inclusions are visible to the eye from the side. Both WF and BG will tell you.

Personally, if two stones were completely equal, I'd choose the one that had closer to the 56 table. I just like that look a little better even though many people wouldn't notice the difference.

Both of these vendors are trustworthy vendors, just do a search on PS on how many satisfied customers, but I bought from Wink of highperformancediamond.

Maybe ask these 2 vendors to pick the best from their stones of the above selection then buy both and see which you prefer and return the other for a refund.

Thanks for the info. I guess I assumed a VS2 would be eye-clean even from the side? Is it worth it to move up to VS1? When I look at the lab reports, VS2's seem very-included compared to VS1's. But I guess that is all relative!

Do you mind describing what is different in the look of the diamonds with a table closer to 56?

Oh, and I agree about the local jewelers--I think that is what got me looking online. It has been difficult to find higher quality stones--I've consistently found better diamonds even at CostCo!

Like you said ... it's all relative! It's basically going to depend on the "mind-clean" vs. "eye-clean" state of mind. Do you really want your stone to have the least amount of inclusions as possible per your budget, or do you just want to ensure it is eye-clean? The labs grade the stones from the top down, therefore it is possible for one to spot inclusions from the sides of a diamond even in VS grades. In the other hand, you can also find SI1's that are eye-clean and not have to pay the premium for VS if that is the case.

Here is a link all about table sizes you might find helpful:

I am in the minority here, I think, but I do like VS1's just because I know the stones will be very clean. I cannot see any inclusions in my VS1 diamond with a 10x loupe. But I did have an earring diamond that was VS2 where you could see a little carbon spot from the side (no one could see it but it was a mind-clean issue for me). So I always ask about the side view. I will say that there are VS2's and even SI1's with white inclusions that are not visible to the eye (but easily visible with a loupe). I did just help my daughter's boyfriend pick out an eye clean SI1 for my daughter's engagement ring primarily because she doesn't know a thing about diamonds other than liking the way they look, so she'll certainly be happy with the stone because the stats won't mean a thing to her other than the carats!

So I think if I were choosing one of your stones for me, I'd choose the VS1 (which I think I put first in my list above). The other two VS2 stones I would ask which one has the best clarity and is clean from the side.
