I need help! My parents are having an engagement party for my fiancee and I and we need to order a cake but I dont know what kind to get. I didnt want some cheesy sheet cake because we are having our party at a nice restaurant. I went to a bakery and looked at some cakes and didnt see anything.

I am having about 50 people and need ideas because I have to order it tomorrow. Can you guys help?

Thanks!!!!

Assorted cheesecakes? You could get cupcakes too.

If you are willing to have more than one cake, maybe bundt cakes with a light icing on top? There are some really great flavors now...

Hi -

I have two approaches you may want to consider.

The first is what my husband and I did for our wedding. It was very small and we spared nothing on the quality of the food and wine. The cake we had may be something you would like to consider. It was made by the pastry chef of one of the gourmet restaurants [Wine Spectator Award winnwr]. She makes wedding cakes on the side - many pastry chefs will do that for you - check out the pastry chef of the retaurant you are working with - that could work too. I [hope] I have attached a pic [it is just of the cake before all the other stuff got put around it]. It was 2 tiers. Each tier had a chocolate layer and a white layer with raspberry preserves and a plain buttercream separating them. The frosting was a simple plain buttercream. The decoration was a garland of fresh red roses [it was just before Christmas]. We accompanied it with fresh strawberries, some stuffed with Boursin and others dipped in chocolate. Each person got a piece of cake, one each of the strawberries [more were passed] and a red rose on their plate. We served it with a nice Brut sparkling wine [Domaine Chandon]. Very simple and people loved it.

The other approach is to make a mini tiered cake for each table. It could look kind of like a colorful wedding cake, or even a mini version of the above decorated with miniature roses [I''d also keep the strawberres]. You could use it as a centerpiece.

Anyway, just a couple of thoughts. Hope I was of some help.

Best,

Blu

We had a nice larger sized round cake for our engagement party. We got it from the bakery of an upscale grocery store.

I like both of JCJD and Rubes ideas... why not have fun with the dessert and save the cake for the wedding!

You can find out what their cake looked like for their wedding and have it replicated on smaller scale. For my folks 30th anniversary surprise party my sister and I found out who made their cake and had it replicated only two tiers smaller. It was awesome.

This is my most favorite cake that I have ever seen at an engagement party. Sorry about the messy PAINT skills. I tried to cover up the couples'' names and everything.

BD- What did you end up doing?

I''m trying to remember what we had at ours but it must not have been cake since I can''t remember?!?!

Is there a favorite cake you have that you get for birthdays or the like? Favorite bakery? We have a few locally that we love, I would have had them make something custom that is not sheet but maybe a two tier round or do like 3 different cake flavors all one tier to be different. Or do invididual desserts like pudding or cupcakes or cheesecakes. Lots of fun ideas!!!

YUM now I am hungry!
