Hi Everyone:

Please help! I stupidly purchased diamond studs via a vendor on Ebay recently. I actually bought 2 pieces: 2.01 carat tw F, VS2 platinum princess cut studs, and a 1.8 carat tw platinum princess cut 5 stone ring all stones G, VVS2. I was to pay $4400 for the earrings, and $2375 for the 5 stone band. The vendor had great feedback, had been very accomodating in our numerous phone conversations regarding both pieces etc. I told him I would have the earrings appraised, which he encouraged, and he guaranteed they would be the color and clarity described, and that if I was unhappy I would get a full refund. So, I decided to go ahead. I also did this before finding this forum, so never talked about the cut though he said - and his appraisal says - they are "very well cut 1b." Also, none of these stones were certified by an independent lab.

Anyway, I received the pieces and immediately noticed that the earrings looked much smaller than I had thought they should. I happen to have a .64 carat H VS2 princess cut diamond from a previous pair of earrings and these new earrings seemed only very slightly larger. Also, the stones on the band seemed to not all be the same size either. I took them to the appraiser and found I was right. The earrings came back as:

1) .87, G, SI1, depth 83.3, table 70, girdle very thk, G/G, fluor strong

2) .93, F, SI1, depth 82.5, table 70, girdle very thk, G/G, no fluor

I realize, and even the appraiser said, there can be some small variations in appraisals, say 5%. Also, he saw the stones mounted, but I don''t feel any of this should make such a huge difference between what I thought I got and what I actually got. I also realize that the diamonds probably look extra small because of the high depth percentage.

The 5 stone ring''s stones were all different sizes - from .28 - .36. Only 1 was vvs2 clarity, 3 were vs1, 1 was vs2, though all were G color with a total carat weight of only 1.52.

Anyway, the seller immediately agreed to replace or refund the 5 stone band, but has given me a hard time about the earrings. Eventually, he indicated he could replace the earrings, but offered to give me some money back instead - 10% of my total purchase price to just keep them. That would be about $680 if I kept both the earrings and the band, $440 if I just kept the earrings.

I have pretty much decided to return the ring for a refund, but am not sure what to do about the earrings. I don''t feel all that confident that I would get anything better the second time around, and maybe for the price I paid, it''s not even realistic. (though I might be willing to spend a bit more for a better pair) I also am worried I might have trouble getting my money back for the earrings now. The earrings are pretty, though smaller than I thought they would be and my gut tells me to send them back but I also have read that earrings do not have to be as good quality as they are not as noticed in the ear.

Should I trust my gut, or just be happy with what I got for the price I paid?

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!!!!!! Thanks!!!!!!

I think you ultimately need to make the decision.

It sounds like the 10% refund is equal to the 10% less diamond you received in the earrings (Short by .21 cts from what I figure). It is hard for me to believe the quality is that good for the price. I always say, you get what you pay for. Did your appraiser speak to the quality of the cut you received?

Thanks for your opinion.

The appraiser did not really speak to me about the cut of the diamonds, though he said the depth percentage was on the high side contributing to their smaller look. He also said that while he appraised the stones for $9000, he could probably get the similar ones for me for about $6000 - still quite a bit more than I paid.

I was thinking of calling him and asking what he thought of the cut - he is local so I could easily bring them back for a second look.

Just two Qs:

- do you like them as they are despite the details of the deal?

If the pieces look ok why not keep them - the price seems right. Not that I like how the goods were represented, sure that

but the diamonds do not know how sellers, labs and appraisers talk about them - they will just keep being what they are I would think...

As a side note, the earring stones, as they are, seem to cost about 2600-2800 apiece (considering the appraiser's notes) for Pricescope quotes and GIA certifie stones. Not that there is any need to get that weight paired with the depth - as you note yourself

A pair of earrings with nicely cut princess diamonds of the grades you wnated (F-VS) and current size (those ~5 milimeters, not carats) should be feasible with the potential difference being not the price but the cut - it could be that your stones are particularly brilliant and clean too and then it is harder to argue for a change, but this I could not know

about size and weight... below are a couple of quotes from Pricescope's database that I used to make the comments above. It seems that you did pay for size, not weight after all

Thanks for the info!

The measurements of my earrings are:

5.2 x 5.09 x 4.2 for the .93 carat

and 5.16 x 4.92 x 4.1 for the .87 carat

They look white and they do sparkle, but they are much smaller than I thought they would be. Why should I pay more for "bigger" stones when they are only bigger because of the depth? The visible size and quality of the stones is more important to me than the actual carat weight. Plus, I am furious that I allowed myself to be so taken advantage of and now it looks like I overpaid even for what I got. Ugggh!

I hope not... weight and size seem to be presented deliberately as the "same thing" quite often about diamonds. And then... cut is not often talked about

Thesee deep stones are discounted for their appearence (as these were) intended for whoever values that weight mark more - only you are not such a shopper!

Best of luck with sortring this out! I hope we will get to know the happy end of the story on PS
