Hello! Be nice to me, its my first post and I need some wedding dress advice (all the way from England here!).

I''ve recently tried on a gown that I really love. I''m not thin - around a US size 16-18 I think if I have the conversion right and it was obvious from trying gowns on that the style that really suits me is a strapless corset-type with a diagonal wrap-around waist that falls into more folds in the front of the dress if that makes sense. As the bits that push me up into a larger size are bust and hips, rather than face, shoulders or arms, this was really flattering and made me look a size or two smaller.

The first dress I liked was my size and needed to be taken in in places, whereas in the second shop, the dress I loved was only there in a size 12 so they put it on and held the back together so I could see what it would look like. The seamstress was very good at explaining when they ordered it in a larger size and made adjustments, where the side seams would lie and the folds etc... The two dresses were a very similar design but I just preferred the embroidery and small details of the second. I''m just worried about spending such a large amount of money ordering something on "trust" that the material will fold and hang right in my size. Logically I can''t see how it would be any other way, but emotionally I''m fretting that when it arrives it won''t look right or I''ll be unhappy. Is this something that a lot of brides have to do - order a dress without trying it on properly and are these alterations somethign that is so everyday in wedding shops? PLus, the first dress that I mentioned, that was my size now, would have to be taken in if I continue to lose weight at the rate I am now. What happens if I order one size and drop a size below by the wedding - would the alterations be dreadful or would they look ok?

I don''t know if US wedding shops are bigger, but the ones in the UK don''t have all the designs in lots of sizes, they tend to just carry one size per gown and then you order it smaller or bigger if you need to. It makes it really difficult to work out what will suit you in your size apart from having tried on similar styles before. The second gown was much better made (from Spain), I preferred the champagne colour as it complemented my olive skin tone and the train was more the size and length I wanted, whereas the first one was ivory, more expensive and the shop wanted to charge an extra $200 for alterations (two different shops).

The picture is from the brochure of the second dress (but I think it shows it in ivory here and obviously on a very thin lady!)

Thanks for any help!

I would think that it is quite common to have to go through what you are going through. The folks at the shop should have sizing charts for the deisgner of the dress that they are following in order to make sure the size that you order is the best one for you. I am also pretty sure that they will tend to order a size that is just right or slightly larger since it is easier to take a dress in than let it out in size. The need for wedding dress alterations is in general very high. I think that if you like the style and felt comfortable with the folks that you were working with, you should be fine. I can understand worrying about it though...don't all brides worry?

who is the designer of your dress? It is lovely!

First on and foremost... Welcome to Pscope.!!!

I would not worry about it. I know that it is the same way here. I am sure that a seamstress would be able to gauge if something is going to fall correctly.

I have a dress that is too big for me and I have to get it altered. I have never seen it the right way... well.. folded in the back.. and I am HIGHLY nervous about it coming back and it looking hideous on me. But I do not think or actually believe that I will have that problem. My seamstress had to tell me not to worry too.. she said that all brides have this worry. (UNLESS of course you have the perfect body... and I have never met someone like that...)

Hi bluep! Welcome to pricescope!

I think your problem is the same in the US. most shops only have the samples in Size 6, so unless you''re lucky at actually that size, you either have a huge amount of extra fabric or not enough when trying on gowns!! I would trust that they would order the right size for you, double check their measurements to the gown company sizing charts and find a dependable seamstress who should be able to do the trick!

Good luck and keep us updated!

Order the gown you like more and have faith. I agree that it''s a good idea to view the actual size chart for the gown you are ordering to ensure that you are getting the right size. I had a co-worker order a Reem Acra gown and when it arrived it was way too big! The shop tried to alter it, but it was a nightmare and she wound up getting a second dress. Be sure that you see the size chart! Wait as long as you can to order the gown if you are planning on going down in size, but be sure to allow for plenty of time.

Beautiful dress!

Welcome to PS and I am sure that you will find that there a bunch of really helpful girls on here! As for your worries about not trying on a dress in your actual size to see where things will fall exactly- that has been my experience in the States as well. With the exception of David''s Bridal, everywhere I went the shops only carried one sample of each dress. And that size varied by shop, ranging from 6 to 10. It just takes a little bit of vision and a lot of faith that the seamstress is accurately describiing to you where the folds and seams will fall.

I do agree that you should check out the size chart for yourself and make sure that the dress shop is ordering the appropriate size. I have heard of horror stories of shops ordering way too large so they can stick you with the alterations.

Hello! And thanks for your replies. Rita, the dress is made by La Sposa - a Spanish firm with a great reputation for exquisitely made gowns (not designer of course, but great for their price).

Sounds like alterations are par for the course...for all brides! I guess the major worry is that I really don''t like being sizes bigger than I used to be (although I swopped my figure for a lovely baby so fair play!). I''ve already slimmed down a fair bit hence the baggy dress in places but would like a few more to come off! No pressure from anyone else other than me really.

One of the reasons I liked the 2nd shop (where that gown was), is that the owner said all of their alterations were included in the price of the dress, so its totally in their interests to order the right size for you as its less work for them! However it takes so long to get the dresses made and ordered in over here, that unless I get it right the first time, there won''t really be much time to go around and get a 2nd dress (or budget hehe).

As everyone else has said, your situation isn''t uncommon over here either

. The best you can do is have the seamstress point out every detail and cross your fingers

. The sample I tried on for my dress was definitely not my size, and I had to rely on the seamstress to pin things back in all different places before the dress looked even somewhat decent. But I just crossed my fingers and ordered one in my size. Actually, this coming Saturday I am going to try on MY dress, and I hope, hope, hope that it looks okay!

As for losing weight (congrats on the baby!

), it is definitely easier to take in a dress than it is to take one out. So when you do order your dress, make sure you tell the seamstress that you plan on losing a bit more weight and make sure she is comfortable with taking the dress down another size or two (or more!). Some designs are so much easier to do this than others. But a good seamstress will fit your dress to you perfectly!

And I understand the waiting time for your dress. Mine took six months! And I LOVE the fact that the second shop includes alterations. Some shops near me do also, but of course the shop that had my dress was not one of them. But that''s just my luck

ohhh! I know that dress! It's by La Sposa, same designer as my dress=) I think I tried on the pronovias (parent company) version of this dress. It's gorgeous!
This is one of those dresses that work on all body types. The gathering of the fabric on one side makes your waist look slimmer. And the high waist line makes you look taller (I'm short so low waists are a problem for me). I was told that alterations to take in a size should be pretty simple.
Most of us try on dresses that are not in our size. Unfortunately, you just have to go with what you see in whatever size they have in the store. You should have a pretty good idea how it's going to look.

Here is the size chart for all the pronovias lines (pronovias, la sposa, st patrick. If you are in between sizes and you plan on dropping a size, order the smaller of the sizes.

That''s a beautiful gown!!

Have faith in the seamstresses. I think all of us are nervous when we order the dress! Alterations are inevitable, and expensive so good job finding a shop that includes them in their price!

Congratulations on the weight loss so far! Have they given you a cut off date for when you need to order it by?

If it''s only a few months before the wedding why not get measured at the cut off date and order that size? Then you can relax and if you lose a few more inches then you can get it taken in, but if you don''t then that''s ok too as the dress will fit!

I got married in Harrogate in October 2005, but ordered my dress in London when I was over to the UK 4 months before (i live in the Middle East). I''m so glad that they made me order the size I was when they measured me as I didn''t lose much!!

You''ll have enough stress with organising the wedding without trying to live up to unreal expectations about weight loss. Maybe you''re one of those who lose when they''re stressed? I''m just an eating machine when under pressure (I''m amazed I wasn''t larger on the wedding day)!!

The dress looks lovely and we can''t wait to see the pics! Where are you getting married?

heh. I''m getting married in August and they want 12-16 weeks ordering time plus a month for alterations, so I guess that means I need to order in March. I''ll definately order the size I am then. No way am I putting myself under more stress by worrying about not being able to get in the thing when it arrives. If I lose more weight and they can''t fully alter it downwards, thats a heck of a lot preferably to it being too small, them not being able to fully alter it upwards and me bulging everywhere!! Besides I have 4 accountancy professional exams to pass, a 14 month old baby to look after, a daily exercise routine, and the wedding to plan....between now and then.....so hopefully the stress will have at least one positive effect and make me thinner! (always worth hoping lol).

You all must be wedding experts by now...having done one. The only person I know who planned a wedding is my cousin, who I am really close to, but she is being COMPLETELY cagey on costs as I think she is embarrised by how much my uncle and aunt must have spent. Is £625 reasonable for a La Sposa dress? with all alterations included? The other dress which was D''Virge was £685 plus alterations.

At the moment, our budget isnt too bad -
local church,
oldest pub in town opposite for the reception as they''ll let us have their function room, the whole pub and a free dj for no hire charge except the food and drink cost.
I don''t want any fancy wedding cars as we''re not really driving too anywhere (quite like the idea of hitching up my skirts and walking through our little town with my bridesmaids to church LOL),
£32 a head for 120 people (eek) then £10 per head for 200 people buffet in the evening,
£1000 behind the bar,
£800 for photographer,
no wedding video, cake being made free by one of my best friends who is a chef, flowers being done for cost by my other cousin who does wedding flowers, aunt making bridesmaids dresses for cost (used to be a seamstress)
£500 for groom and groomsmen suit hire
£200 for wedding rings
£100 for homemade invitations and postage
£800 for bride dress and accessories

Here''s a picture of the other dress - the one from the shop that charges alterations
