I’m very new to gems and recently bought a ~2ct vivid green emerald which comes with GRS report. Inside, it mentioned that CE(O): minor to moderate (surface cavity fillings). May I know what is “surface cavity fillings”? Will they huge effect on price when I resale years later? Any issues like durability if I wear them?

Thank you.

With Emerald “oiling” is to be expected and done to most emeralds.
Emeralds are a type 2 gemstone, basically meaning that crystalline imperfections are common. It’s just how emeralds form.
For this reason emeralds need to be treated with care and consideration when wearing. As a child I was mesmerized by a friends mother who had a HUGE emerald ring. I was also privy to the fact that she accidentally “whacked” the ring and the emerald sheared into two pieces!
Back to your question, most people who buy emeralds don’t want anything other than oil treatment. Modern treatment with a substance called Opticon which is more permanent than oil (the oil slowly leeches out over time) is slowly being more accepted.
The question is “what substance has been used to fill in the surface reaching fractures?”. In the case with rubies it’s flux or glass filling and this process is very poorly viewed by everyone. Basically a glass filled ruby is of little value or desire to own.
The question about selling later on is again tricky. You buy the emerald at “retail” and you sell “pre loved”. Unless a particularly rare or desirable gem, most private sellers take a loss when they re sell in the pre loved market.
An emerald with moderate residues will not be on most people’s shopping list unless it’s large, of good colour and well priced.

The filling can be anything from oil to resin (excel) for emerald. They r vry common for emerald esp colombian.

As for the reselling issue, this is a big problem in gemstone. We buy at or close to retail, and have to sell at wholesale. Unless we r talking about the very top end of the gem. Sth like 5ct no oil emerald with butterfly wing effect. This will be easily sold at retail at auction house (minus the fee)
