Hi everyone

This is my first post so I apologise in advance if any of my terminology is incorrect.

I am trying to locate a pale pink oval stone, either a sapphire or spinel, between 1.5-2.5ct. I really want to avoid the "pad" market because although there are some lovely stones around I just feel a more standard pink will perhaps be easier to find.

I am also prepared to consider other shapes...cushion, emerald, radiant.

I'm in Australia and there doesn't seem to be much available here so I expect for the right gem I will have to order from OS.

If anyone has suggestions on where I should be looking please feel free to let me know.

Also thought I should add this isn't for a dress ring. It is for my engagement ring....so some advice would be appreciated :))

Do you have a budget? That helps narrowing it down.

What do you think of these spinels:

With either of these, you'd have plenty left for the setting. :)

They are both great colours!
Can anyone fill me in on "Windows" and "bow ties"...I believe they are flaws I should be looking out for? Except I'm not really sure what I should be looking for and whether it's possible to find stones without these? (Sorry I'm a total newbie when it comes to gems. I just know I want to find a quality gem)

I think then, that I would look through cecile raley designs etsy shop, concave gems, spectralgems, and finewatergems (and if you are having fun then litnon, mastercutgems and multicolour as well). Just to see a lot of the different possible colours before deciding on anything.

Once you narrow in on the colour, then some of the other lovely PSers will be able to help you find a match. They are very talented at it!

But do check everyone's shipping policies before falling in love with anything. Some vendors are great about shipping internationally, and some are more focused on their home country.

Take a look at this link - Jerry has a lot of great pictures and explanations.

In my opinion, it's tough to find an oval without some sort of bowtie. I wouldn't necessarily say it's a flaw (a window, on the other hand, is more often viewed as a flaw and can sometimes be closed by tweaking the pavilion and/or with a setting), but it's something to see in-person so you know if you can live with it or not. However, I did just buy a very badly windowed oval and Jerry tweaked it, and it does not have a bowtie. Sometimes too the darker areas in pictures are simply reflections of the camera doing the picture-taking. So it's important to ask questions, and sometimes even ask for additional photos.

Great! Thank you for the suggestions and I'll be sure to check into shipping policies.

Wow! That is a fantastic explanation and helps me know what to look out for. Thanks so much :))

I'm off to search the links posted for pretty pink sparklies!

Ha! I was going to post the smaller spinel that SparklesLuver posted. Great minds ;)

A couple other US vendors:

https://www.etsy.com/listing/257666...pinel-oval-cut-76x6mm?ref=shop_home_active_25

This might be hard to get; I think Gary has a limit on international shipping, but..

These might be too saturated fkr what you want, but they also jumped out at me:

And there were a couple of radient cuts at multicolur that might also be interesting

Since you are in Australia, I would start with Doug Menadue since he is an excellent cutter who is located there as well. But before you even start looking at stones, it might help you to look at these threads:

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/list-of-vendors-for-reference.208782/

Good luck to you! Fwiw, I thought the smaller Multicolour stone (the oval) had promise. If you do follow up with that one, I'd ask for more details about the inclusions.

Have you tried Seda gems? They are in Australia. I ordered a grey spinel in January and am very happy with it and with the customer service. I'm in the U.S. I just browsed the website and nothing as large as your description is listed, but online vendors often have items in stock they have not yet listed on their website.

Oh wow...thanks so much to everyone for their contributions! I certainly have plenty of options to explore.
I'll be sure to check back in once I've narrowed down a few choices. You all seem so educated and although people's taste obviously varies a great deal, quality is quality so once again I'll appreciate any thoughts/feedback.
Thanks again everyone. I'll be back once I've had a good look at all the options

<high five to chroman> ;)

I also noted that 4.69ct from MC - so lovely and big (and the depth is great too)!

ETA: I'd also take a look at John's inventory: http://johndyergems.com/catalog_pages/gemstone-color-Pink.html
See if anything there strikes your fancy.

Thanks Sparklies....I've never seen anything like those zigzag cuts etc. My mind is officially blown! I probably wouldn't choose one of those for this particular ring, I'd certainly be interested in having other items made using a non traditional cut.

That 4.69ct is amazing for sure and a tiny part of me says "go for the rock" but I'm a size 4 ring and if I'm honest it would look more like a cocktail ring on my petite hands.

Thank you for the recommendation. I'm going to contact Seda and see if they have anything not yet listed that might suit.

That Julia B spinel above reminds me of an African padparadscha, very nice.

You're welcome. Good luck on your quest for the perfect gem. Please show us pics once you choose.

Ok, so from all the links provided I like the colors of the first two Spinels that SparkliesLuver posted from multicolor and the 1ct Spinel from Jeff at earths treasury. I spoke with Jeff via email and he recommended I look at sapphires instead because they are stronger. I've discussed different options with my other half and he seems pretty focussed on getting me the biggest gem possible (must be a pride thing) and also seemed concerned about flaws etc (the words "slightly included" didn't sit well with him) So at this stage I'm going to keep searching. In an effort to compromise I'm prepared to look at any shape/cut as well.

For as long as I can remember I have always wanted a pink solitaire so for me the focus is on the right colour in a nice clean, well cut gem. I will eventually be looking for a setting and I already know I don't want a halo or diamonds set into the band. I'd like platinum or white gold but of course I will need to make sure the pink is vibrant enough to cope with that.

Those things said, I'd contact Elle of The Gemstone Project and see if she can ask Geoffrey (of Mayer & Watt) what he has that might work for you. For example, the one below looks promising. They also have a ton of inventory not listed online.

I'd also contact Jeff White of WhitesGems and see what he has.

Thanks Sparklies!
