Previously I was only looking for peach/pink sapphires but I'm opening to the idea of other stones. My budget for the stone is about $800 so I'm looking mostly at spinels, mahenge garnet, and morganite- in that order. The color range I'm looking for is a pale to medium peachy pink. Something that will complement well with rose gold. Pear or oval cut. This is my favorite stone I've found so far. What do you think of this one? And what sites/vendors should I be looking at for similar stones?

Hi Ellebelle, I would suggest reaching out to Yvonne Raley on Etsy. She carries Malaya garnets and morganites on her page. Right now she has an 18% sale going on in her shop.:-) Cecile Raley Designs is the name of her Etsy shop. She could also source something for you if you don't like the options in her shop.

Thank you so much for the suggestion! I reached out to her last night and now shes sourcing a stone for me at JCK! Perfect timing!
That's awesome, Ellebelle, thanks for letting me know!

Update! So Yvonne is following up on a few leads and in the meantime my boyfriend went to the jewelry district in LA. He told them he was looking for a peach colored stone, sapphire preferred but he would consider others. They showed him pink tourmaline and zircon. But I'm leading towards mahenge garnet because I've seen some nice ones in budget online. Also garnet is his birthstone so it feels a little more special.
But i've heard zircon is not a good option for an everyday ring? Can someone explain this? I think zircon and garnet are both around 7-7.5 mohs but zircon has a cleavage?
So between mahenge garnet, zircon, tourmaline, or morganite which would be the best option for a peachy pink e-ring? (Sapphire still no1 but value for the price is not looking good) To be honest, it will probably be a weekend only ring as I work on a hospital and wash my hands constantly. But i still want something that will hold up long term.

  1. I think that a Mahenge or Malaya garnet would be your best bet for a reasonably priced peach colored stone. I think that they have better color intensity than most morganite. Can't answer the question re the hardness of zircon, but would advise setting your stone in a protective setting if it's going to be worn a lot. Good luck!

Thats a beautiful color but Im really holding out for a pear shape. Oval would be second best. The pear in your pic is beautiful and similar to what Im hoping for in my setting

Zircon will show facet abrasion fairly quickly as an everyday ring. We’re talking well within a year of wear.

I am a fan of garnets. They come in lots of different colors and many of them, especially the lighter ones, have a good deal of sparkle. (My avatar ring has green garnets.) I enjoy gardening and of course I don’t wear my rings when doing chores like that. (Remember, house dust is mostly quartz.) For me the garnets have been sturdy enough, but I rotate between different colored stone rings so that cuts down on the wear. Hope this helps.

Congratulations on your engagement!

What about Earthstreasury?

This is not pear, but maybe you like it.
Yes, I've seen that lovely oval. Definately a top contender if I go oval.

I was afraid of that. :(
I heard zircon wasnt good for an everyday ring, but the jeweler showed it to my bf and said it was same hardness as garnet. Would garnet show wear that quickly too?

Your avatar ring is so pretty! Since I don't plan to wear the ring to work, I'm hoping garnet will be fine. I also have a sapphire ring that I can use as stand in.

Thank for the congrats, but we're not quuuite engaged yet. I call it "engaged to be engaged".
He still wants to do a proper proposal once the ring is in hand.

Garnet will hold up better but still needs to be babied.

I think when people hear “engagement ring” they think the stone will get daily wear for decades, maybe even when doing chores and digging in dirt and carrying heavy things. I baby my colored stone rings more than that. Also, a lot of women upgrade at some point or switch to an anniversary ring, or just have several special rings in rotation. Do what makes you happy (and doesn’t break the bank, lol).

Happy “engaged to be engaged”! :appl: Being married is loads of fun!

I was scolded by my jeweler friend for constantly wearing expensive rings and not taking them off to give them a rest. She said, "Why do you think all those antique rings are still around? They didn't wear them ALL the time!" It was something to think about, but I don't know if that's true or not. Although, Queen Elizabeth changes her jewelry!

Thanks @MissyBeaucoup, I don't really like the idea of an upgrade but I hadn't thought of having multiple special rings to rotate through. So instead of one 10k ring, I'll get 5 2k rings. My boyfriend thought he was getting off the hook easy by getting me a colored stone... :Up_to_something2:

Alright, I've searched everywhere and I think I've narrowed it down to two pears....

First one is 1.4 ct and 8.6x 5.5mm. I really like the color and the size is just right. I don't know much about cut, would this be an acceptable cut?
Its from multicolour which I found on the recommended vendors list but I haven't read too many threads of people buying here. They have a 10 return policy but my bf is concerned about paying the return shipping to Thailand.

Second one was sourced to Yvonne (thanks to @leslie1956 for the reccommendation). It is roughly 1.5ct and 9x6.
She gave me two to choose from but I like the bottom one better.

So now I have to choose! Both are within budget, but the multicolour gives us more wiggle room for the setting and wedding band.
Thoughts on quality of cut and color?

This is described as pink, with grayish saturation. There are others with better saturation. When you look at the stones, scroll down and click "Download the Identification Report," which tells you the details about the stone. Try to stay away from gray. Read the one for this stone, and compare it to the one you posted.

Is ok if I kind of like the dusty pink? The other ones are too orangey or saturated color for my taste...

You can like any color you want! I just wanted to point out the saturation, since there is only the one photo, plus returning it to Thailand could be costly, if you aren't pleased.

Glad that Yvonne found a couple of stones for you to see :) I like the bottom one, too. An advantage with Yvonne is that you can see the stone in person and return it if you don't like it. She has some lovely settings for pear-shaped stones, too. She could do a bang up job on an e-ring within your budget even with a custom design.

I hope you have many moments to celebrate in your long & happy marriage. Enjoy!

MissyBeaucoup,

Topaz comes in some of the loveliest pink hues assuming you will accept a bit of brownish secondary hue. Peaches, at least those I'm familiar with are not purely pinkish orange.

Update! We bought a stone! It was sourced through another etsy vendor, Lindsay at AFacetAffair. Should be arriving on Friday! Isn't it pretty? Its just the color I envisioned and the shape is the perfect teardrop pear! And at 1.86 ct 9.5x6.5, its almost double from the stone we started with and returned! I just love it so much and really hope it looks this good in person!

Congratulations, Ellebelle, it's very pretty :-)

I got my stone! I'm so happy with it. It throws the prettiest rose and red flashes of color in direct light. And its quite a color changer. Mostly pink and peach but in my bedroom in low lighting it looked violet. Such personality!
Its been such a journey to get to this point, many shopping trips and countless hours of online viewing. And I can honestly say its the prettiest color and just the perfect teardrop shape I was looking for!

Oh, gosh! It's lovely! I'm happy you found your stone--it's such a great feeling, isn't it?!

What a great result. This is a gorgeous stone

Thank you for the kind words. It was such a great feeling to see it and actually be excited and impressed by it. I was so disappointed with our original online order and I was nervous to be disappointed again. But as soon as I saw it I was giddy about it!:appl:
My boyfriend is also relieved to be done with the stone hunt. Poor guy has had to deal with me obsessing over ring details the last few weeks...
