Help finding sapphire for anniversary ring

Hi everyone. I've been browsing PS on and off for about six years, but this is my first post. I'm looking at getting my SO a sapphire anniversary ring, probably a diamond halo, which would be a big step up from any past purchases I have made (mostly lower-cost CS of different kinds, to dip toe in the water and because CS are awesome!). The plan is to buy the stone first and then get a setting, and I'm wondering if you guys can help me find some sapphires that might be good options. Any thoughts or input would be awesome.

(Although: I'm not sure about the best way to do this since I've seen some similar posts in the past where lurkers come in and buy stones that people suggest...any thoughts? In any case, of course I plan to keep a close eye on the forum.)

Here are some details about what I think I want, although I'm not 100% fixed on anything just yet except good color.

-Budget is probably ~$3-4k for the stone plus maybe 1k-1.5k for the setting. I have some flexibility, both higher and lower.
-Color is most important, and unsurprisingly I like vivid blue. Seems to be the most expensive kind, unfortunately. Gemfix has good photos/videos, so as an example, color like https://gemfix.com/gems/sapphire-blue-11-1322 would be great. Lighter is maybe ok, like the color of https://gemfix.com/gems/sapphire-blue-11-1284. Lighter is far better than dark/black. https://gemfix.com/gems/sapphire-blue-11-1288 seems pretty nice color too.
-Avoid blacking out, which always feels like a common issue with sapphires. I worry some about how a stone's color will darken up in the setting. Minimal violet or grey tones. I live in the N.W. United States so no tropical sun here.
-Shape is ideally rectangular cushion or oval. Maybe round? I don't love square cuts as much, though maybe if everything else is perfect and the price is awesome...
-Treatment. Heat is fine but no other types of treatment. I'd plan to have any stone I bought lab analyzed to make sure it's what it claims to be.
-Clarity and cut are important for sparkly-ness, but we won't be looking at it with a loupe every day or anything. Precision cutting would be nice but isn't my top concern as long as there are no major problems; same with a small inclusion or two. No clouding though.
-I'd be ok with buying a couple different stones that look good online and seeing which is the best in person, and returning the others. No huge rush for timing, for example it doesn't have to be before Christmas or anything.

I'm happy to buy on the internet as long as the vendor is rock solid (heh heh) and has a good return policy - I'd be nervous buying from anyone that doesn't have an established reputation. I'm in the U.S. but open to buying from established sellers overseas if that becomes helpful.

As long as we're here, I'd be happy for thoughts on settings too. We don't need a custom setting. I have been looking at the ones at James Allen, as someone here posted their falling edge halo with a sapphire and I thought it was very nice. I've been looking at the platinum version of that, maybe something like https://www.jamesallen.com/engageme...tline-falling-edge-engagement-ring-item-53039, though I'm open to other options as well.

Anyway, my main focus is on finding a good stone and would love any thoughts about the above, or suggestions to consider, or anything else that might be helpful. Thanks so much in advance!

I had great luck with Finewater Gems. Gary was wonderful to work with and answered my many questions. I love the cut and color of the sapphire I selected. He sent a video of the three I was considering, which helped to see them side by side. The stone was definitely darker when set so took that into consideration based on what I had read on this forum.
Best of luck! I am sure the experts here will have many suggestions.

It can be more cost effective to buy a gem to fit a stock setting.
Personally I’d rather put more into the gem than into a hand cast setting, but that’s me.
Sapphires are more often found in oval or round so there’s plenty of stock setting options. Have a look at Ivy & Rose (they are a recommended vendor and many PSers have been happy with their rings and setting - me included). Common sizes for their settings would be 7;x 5 mm, 8 x 6 mm or 5mm round, 6mm round, 7mm round. Thankfully most cutters domtry and cut to these dimensions.

OP, you have clearly done your homework and your list is very comprehensive and, to me, reasonable. I think you should browse the PS recommended vendors and see if you can find anything you like.

I love Ivy & Rose and they will set your stone for you in their settings. Another fuss-free option you could consider is James Allen, which sometimes has nice sapphires, and their setting catalogue is huge.

Thanks, everyone!

RCJ, I may consult with Gary as time goes on.

Bron, I agree completely with you about stock settings. I'll have to do a little more homework on sizes. Honestly I know less about settings than anything else, because I think the gemstones are just more fun and interesting. But I'm learning settings too, of course. And will look more at Ivy.

Peacechick, thanks. I will keep browsing vendors to see what people have. And that JA sapphire is the right color and certainly easy to get put together...tempting! The only real question is do I buy that 1.6c or seek out something a little larger :twisted2: ...so easy to rationalize "just a little bit more"!

ATM I'm looking over the PS vendor inventories in some more detail though.

I can totally understand wanting to not buy from an individual, but just wanted to mention that arkieb1 has a few sapphires listed on LT now;

Interesting - do you know, has anyone on here ever bought from this seller, or otherwise have experience buying from individuals overseas? I'd consider it if I could figure out how to ensure the risks are addressed. Some kind of escrow maybe?

Pretty!

I know that OP plans to cert the stone by himself. If for some reasons, it comes back with more than just heated treatment, would JA refund OP's the cost of the lab report on top of the full refund? JA's gemstones come with their own ID certs, but not a proper GIA or AGL ones,

Hmmm. Great question that I hadn't thought of. Anybody know anything about this? My thinking about doing a cert is, that I can't possibly know what the gems actually are on my own, and for a tiny fraction of the purchase price, we can confirm everything. Although I'm interested in hearing if you guys have a different take.

As @Niel said: "...heat could mean minor heat, heat with some residues, major residues, or it could be glass filled. depending on how severe the treatment it could effect the hardness of the stone, it opacity of the stone, and of course the value..." on a previous post.:read:

Yeah, that kind of sums it up in my mind too.

Thanks again to everyone for all your input and advice! Just wanted to return and update.

With some of your advice, plus lots of research on stones, options, considerations with buying from private sellers vs. retail, etc., I ended up finding a great oval halo sapphire ring on loupetroop from a pricescoper, @iluvshinythings. I had never bought anything quite like this before, much less from a private seller, so it was a learning experience for me, but working with her was fantastic. She was super helpful and good to work with and it went so smoothly. She had bought the stone separately and I liked it, and I liked the setting as well. Very surprising, since after learning a bit about CS it's impossible to imagine doing anything other than first getting the stone that you want, and then the setting, and that was what I had planned to do. But amazingly, in this case the stone and setting were both good to go.

Ultimately I pulled the trigger and the seller was able to get the ring to me by Christmas, which turned out to be fantastic. I ordered a ring box from amazon with a little floodlight inside, wrapped it up, and hid it in the tree. Then on Christmas morning, after the presents had been opened and the kids were in the other room playing, I'm all "hmm is there something else hiding in the tree...?" My wife is pretty low key, but this was totally unexpected for her since I had somehow managed to keep my excitement under wraps, and she was astonished/thrilled/amazed and refuses to take it off, which is pretty much exactly what you want! I eventually pried it off her finger to send to AGL and they reconfirmed it was just as expected (AGL was also great to work with, btw). This was an anniversary ring and she's now put her original engagement ring on her right hand and uses this one as her wedding ring.

So thanks again to all for an awesome experience! It's been amazing and fun.

PS: It's not the end of the story of course, because unfortunately, with all my new knowledge and experience, I now am more entranced with colored stones than ever, and I also can't imagine ever being happy with basic jewelry-store quality again! I just keep thinking about that unbelievable green garnet sold for such a screaming deal on loupetroop/here a month or two ago, and wondering when the next similar deal is coming down the road...I might need to build a CS line in my budget, and yeah it'll be me since me, not my wife, is the one buying gemstones! So if anybody new to the CS game reads this and goes down this path, you've been warned! :D

I’m glad that your wife loved it!

Congratulations!! I missed this post in December, but my engagement ring is the falling edge setting you liked from James Allen, set with a sapphire :)

I’m glad you found a beautiful ring and your wife loved it!
