Hi everyone,

New to the site but desperately need some advice.

I have a loose 3.23ct stone on a HRD cert. Im UK based and looking to cash it in. Had lots of interest but it seems I would get more if it was on a GIA cert. Im aware there's a strong possibility it would normally be marked down but I've sent it to the assay office and shown a few experts and they agree with the grading. So my questions.

How easy is it to get the HRD Laser inscription removed and will it effect the weight?
Do I need to travel / send stone to the US to get it GIA graded?

Thanks in advance

Tony

Removing the inscription should not have an appreciable impact on the weight. Not more than a point.

Is there a reason you need to do that? You can submit it to GIA without removing it. It will be noted in the comments section. You can elect to have the GIA inscription as well, or skip that.

If the grading is within accepted tolerance between the two labs (+/- one grade in color and/or clarity) you will end up with a solid dual certified diamond.

Thanks for the quick responses. Good point really about it being double graded. Best to just add GIA then. Another question. Would this stone be easier to sell stateside or generate a better price than UK.

3.23ct
D
Loupe clean
excellent on every cut option.

thanks

Probably UK, since pricing seems to be a little higher than stateside.

U.K. pricing will include VAT at 20%, plus the exchange rate with the USD is poor at the moment.

I think it would be easier to sell in the US as there’s a much bigger market there, although I don’t know how you’d achieve that. Possibly consigning with a well known seller?

Does VAT apply to current owners selling a diamond to someone else in the UK?
If so, then yeah, the US market would have a clear advantage.

Probably not, actually. I still think there’s a very limited U.K. market for stones of this size, especially from a private seller.
