So my fiance and I had our wedding bands handmade because we used the gold from his mother''s wedding ring to inlay into a 5mm platinum band (which apparently is a difficult task). The jeweler we used was recommended to us by my fiance''s step-mother, who has worked with him on many occassions in the past (she is a jewelry designer). We received the rings in the mail, and his ring is obviously uneven, which is made more obvious by the fact that there is a strip of gold running through the middle of it, so there are not equal amounts of platinum on either side. I took it in to a jewelry store to have it measured, and it turns out that it is 4.5mm wide on part of the ring, and the rest is 5mm. To me, this seems like a pretty big difference.

I emailed the jeweler and politely expressed my concern, and he frankly told me that handmade rings will not be perfect, and that they worked very hard to get the gold in the middle, and nothing could be done at this point. The gold strip (which apparently is the difficult part) looks fine, but the actually ring itself (made of platinum is obviously uneven!

Does anyone have knowledge about how difficult something like this would be to fix? Is it possible to just add more platinum to one side to even it out? I would have assumed that he would have immediately offered to fix it with sincere apologies, but instead he said that nothing could be done at this point.

We haven''t paid for the ring yet, but it is not so simple that we could just send it back and say "No, thank you" because my fiance''s mother''s gold is in the ring. I am planning on calling him to express that I am not happy with it, but if he refuses to fix it, I just don''t feel comfortable spending a rather large chunck of change on something that doesn''t look right to me. I understand that it is handmade, which comes with its imperfections, but this seems like a rather large and obvious imperfection!

I''ve attached a photo, but it is difficult to tell from the picture.

Do you guys think that I should just live with it and let it go, or should I stick to my guns?

What does she think?

I am the she - haha, He isn''t bothered by it as much as I am. But I really think it will drive me crazy the rest of my life!

OHHHH, you mean his step-mother! Sorry--she just wants to stay out of it. But she lives in a different city, so she hasn''t seen it yet. She really isn''t being much help at all.

I don''t like patch up jobs. Soldering 0.5mm of platinum on one side is not the easiest, and I think there is a fair chance the jeweller will mess the ring up more in the process. I would suggest filing the ring so that it is all an even 4.5mm - this is easy and fast.

If you plan on having the ring put to a grinder, make sure the jeweler is going to give you a refund on the Platinum he removes. Provided you send it back to the same jeweler.

I feel for you, this in no way is an easy task.

The easiest thing to do would be to file it down so that the circumference of the ring is even: if your fiance is determined to have a ring that is 5 mm, not 4.5, you could then have a thin ring soldered to the top of it again, and polished flat (though that sounds like finicky work, especially with the inlay). Good luck on getting this corrected - it is special and wonderful that you used the gold of his mother''s band.

I agree that filing the ring down would be the best bet and sounds like your fiance would not really care? By the way, it''s a nice ring and a great idea to put the gold from mom''s ring in it!

I actually think that your ring is beautiful, and I personally like a bit of imperfection. My wedding ring is a solid chunk of 21k Saudi gold, my husband has a matching one, and although mine is only a size ''I'', mine actually weighs more than his (mine can almost sit inside his). I love the simplicity of it and the solidness, to me it truly represents marriage; strong, solid, precious, not always perfect but beautiful despite this. My ring is uneven, almost as though the gold has simply had a hole punched through it, and after 22 years of constant wear (and abuse) it is now worn slightly flat at the top, and has a few digs and marks it it. If anything though, it''s even more beautiful now!
I suppose what it boils down to though is whether you would be able to spend the rest of your life with that ring on your finger, or whether you are always going to be annoyed and dissatisfied with it. If you cannot love it as it is (and let''s face it, surely your husband-to-be has some faults, yet you love him), then the leveling suggestion of the other contributors is probably the best option, although I do worry that it still may not be absolutely perfect. I am surprised that your jeweller hasn''t attempted to rectify the situation though. If you do find another jeweller to sort out the ring, perhaps you should deduct that amount from the original invoice? Good luck with everything.

Old and battered but loved - just like my husband, lol
