Hi everyone. To make a long story short, my fiancé and I were in St Thomas and we ended up buying something “in the heat of the moment”. I only noticed the diamond’s flaws when I got home and was looking closer at the pics. Thing is… I cannot return it. This is a 3 ct round cut, the color is okay, but you can see the inclusions, which I obviously did not notice at the moment we purchased because I was just too excited to get the ring. It does look nice in person but the thought that I made my fiancé overpay because I was “too excited” is kinda bothering me.

This cost $13,500. Please share your thoughts! Did we overpay?

I don't think the price was too much based on the (apparent) clarity. Do you have a lab report on the diamond? If not would you consider getting a lab report or sending to one of our 'expert' appraisers so you know exactly what you have there?

Is this a natural diamond or lab grown?

Natural. I went to a local jeweler to have it appraised and they confirmed.

It’s hard to see what you mean from the pics. So what specific clarity issue are you concerned about?

There is an inclusion on the bottom right, which I only noticed after a week. I tend to look straight to the little white spot. Then, I was just curious as what is the price for a Diamond that has an obvious inclusion.

And mainly… does it look good? To be honest I’m not too hung up on the quality, because at the price point I knew I had to compromise, unless going for a lab grown. But I am no diamond expert!

If you can’t return it, is there any sense in asking this question? Most posters on this board are obsessed with cut—how does it shine? Throw off colors? Etc? It will open up a can of worms. That said, a 3 carat that fits the taste of posters here would cost at least 4 times as much as you paid. Can you take more pics in different lighting situations?

To me this sounds like a lab grown diamond. I have personally never seen a 3 ct, natural, fairly clean-looking, G-K color diamond priced as low as $13,500 USD, regardless of the quality of the cut.

There is an inclusion right at the bottom, hence the price. that’s what I was referring to, and that’s mainly my concern. I did take the two jewelers and they tested. It turns out it is a diamond! lol

What is your ring size? It seems a bit small for a 3ct (I am not implying the stone is small by any means, just a bit smaller than the 3cts I have seen.) Are you sure it is a 3ct stone? Anyway, I have to agree with @RunningwithScissors that it seems rather inexpensive for a natural, fairly good color 3ct stone (lab-grown diamond test as Earth-grown diamonds). But since there is no return, does it really matter what the clarity is? Just enjoy it and your engagement.

Lab diamonds are also diamonds and will test as diamonds. But since you have no certificates there's no way of telling what you have. I would agree with the other posters the price points to it being a lab.

Did your jewelers check for any inscriptions on the girdle?

Lab diamonds will test as diamonds because they are diamonds. Just fast-tracked for your enjoyment. There are some inclusions that are exclusive to mined stones and exclusive to lab stones so it's worth sending off to get a report for piece of mind.

In short, your fiancee didn't pay too much if natural, and he paid about the right price for lab, so if your initial concern was about being overcharged, you're safe there. If you were however led to believe you were getting a mined stone but was sold a lab, then the vendor is at fault. Can't you contact the vendor and ask them? Did they not offer any sort of report or certificate? It's fairly important to know these things for insurance etc. too.

I'm wondering if this is a clarity enhanced diamond based on the price.
Did they give you a grading report with this stone?

Yes, my guess is clarity enhanced or lab.

OP: both will test as diamonds because they are. Clarity enhanced diamonds are worth significantly less than non clarity enhanced, but of course are still diamonds.

Lab diamonds are also diamonds, but are created rather than mined.
