Help interpreting images - what do these contrast flutter-looking facets do?

I’m looking at stone A. I was impressed with how much consistent light return there was (no visible ring at all under table), but looking at stone B I’m wondering what the extra contrast does - both in terms of the slight ring under the table and the little fluttery-looking things around the circumference of the stone. Will stone A return too much light and not have enough contrast? 0FA04F34-A3D1-4DD1-982C-D1EB4736932D.jpeg

Stone A has some painting.
The trade off is watery scintillation off the upper region outside the table vs more active on/off scintillation without the painting.
I find heavily painted diamonds to look slow as in they put on a slow light show comparatively.

At Karl_K, would you mind marking or indicating where you find this painting so that I know it when I see it? Thank you!!

Those images the purple is basically the same as white in aset white images.
Painting\digging that closes the white spots at the end of the stars is generaly way to much. A does that for most of them.

Very helpful!!! Thanks so much @Karl_K

Would you say it’s a “pass on stone A” or “just FYI check out if it’s okay once you’ve got eyes on it”? And can you tell from the images whether the crown versus pavilion have been painted? Thanks!

pass or not is up to you.
Its eye visible so I consider it a serious defect.
Probably crown but that is more of a wild guess than anything.

What is painting?

A detailed explanation for the slow-witted, please.

Here is an old article on it:
I do not agree with some of the conclusions about crown painting, current thinking is its more harmful as its effects on scintillation are better understood.

This is very hard for me to understand. Do you happen to have any photos/videos showing watery scintillation? Thank you!

Photos wont show it and I dont know of a good video of it.
I kinda doubt a video would help a lot due to 2 eyed vision in person vs one camera lens.

Okay, so when I see the stone, I should watch for “sluggish” scintillation? Both brilliance and fire? Anything else to look out for?
