Hi Everyone,

I am looking for a cc garnet (my birthstone) to make into a pendant.
I've been looking on Multicolour and found 2 stones that I like, but I'm not sure which would be better for a necklace.

I'd love your feedback or any other cc garnets that would be a good candidate for my pendant.
My budget for the stone is under $800, bigger the better, Blue-Red/Purple change is what I'd like in a round or cushion cut.

Thanks in Advance!!

the first is horrendously windowed and dark.
the second is too.

Wow - Thank you!! I love the colors of the stone you recommended!
Maybe I'll just bezel it to make it look a little bit larger.

Thank you again! :appl:

Just a caveat it is hard to judge the quality of a cc garnet from pictures, because they are taken with very strong light to show to color and color change. Most cc garnets are very dark in person, and the larger the garnet usually the darker the stone. Smaller stones may be a little lighter/better quality, and I would not want to bezel it but have it in a setting where it can catch alot of light.
And also, cc garnets look different in person. Unlike the photos especially indoor light especially is a mix of short and long wavelength light, so you are not going to see a pure color but a mix that can look dark/muddy.

So buy from a place that has a return policy, and you may need to look at multiple stones.

Gypsy is right on all counts. The only reason I am comfortable with this specific question is because I have bought quite a few ccgarnets from multicolour, and have learned from examining the real stones against the photo in the "report" which is more accurate color and darkness-wise than the photo in the listing. Gypsy is especially right in saying that they tend to be dark; even the lighter ones. ANd do keep in mind that darkness is NOT the same as saturation. That said, of the 22 pages of cc garnets at multicolour this is the one i would recommend, unless you wanted to spent $6k and then you would still have a dark stone.

eta: the other stone you ask about is very nice, I like the proportions, size and the red. I would be tempted myself BUT ,again, the dark violetish blue is going to be very dark.

Would it be safe to say that even though the two stones have almost the exact same specifications, the larger stone will probably be darker than the smaller stone?

Which two cc garnets are you comparing? MC's GIA colour code pop up box isn't showing up for me either (blank pop up) so I cannot look anything up.

The cc garnet I ordered from Multicolour was much more darker in real life. I like the one VL linked to the best out of the ones in this thread. You could try asking him to emaill you handshot pics but it might not happen. It is worth a try though!

MC's gia color code can be found in the "report". Click on "download identification report" which for me opens in the browser window as a pdf, (if I really want to download it and save it to my drive I have to do something else, probably just the way I have my browser set up to handle pdfs)

I like my cc garnet from Yvonne Raley on etsy. You can ask her if she has more but this one is in her store now:

Ask for more pics for sure!

That one looks nice too, especially if those pics were just taken in regular light!

I prefer the red color in the MC garnets. In real life, will the red look more like the purple of the Yvonne Raley stone?

Thanks everyone for all your replies!
I am just learning about colored stones and recently found out about cc garnets and now I can't stop!
I really like the stone VL chose for me but haven't pulled the trigger yet because my heart had been set on something a little bigger but at the same time I would rather have a good quality stone that's smaller than a larger stone that stinks... ahhh decisions!

Please let me know if you experts come upon any other great stones! =D

VL, I see what you mean about the first one, but the 2nd one is not too bad?

I am interested in VL's explanation too. The window is there but the colour looks not as dark. On the other hand, the colour description of 7/2 means the cc garnet is dark, so does that mean the picture isn't accurate and one should go by the colour description only?

Chrono, how do the color descriptions work? I am completely ignorant about them.

Are you familiar with the old GIA colour grading? Colour is broken down into hue, tone and saturation.
Hue is purity of colour
Tone is darkness / lightness in a scale of 1 to 10
Saturation is pop of colour in a scale of 1 to 6

This is mine from MC umpteen years ago. It was rated as BG6/3 and PR/RP5/4. This translates to Blue Green hue, medium dark tone with very slightly grayish saturation. The second is purple red or red purple with medium tone and moderately strong saturation. I wish I'd kept the original picture for comparison. Note that the green did not show up well in my picture.

Oh, I get it. Yes, I am familiar with that system. Thanks, Chrono.
