Help Me Brainstorm Ideas

Ok friends, I'm bored with my collection right now, and trying to keep myself from buying more shiny new toys. I have this lovely moval cluster that I bought a few years ago that I've always wanted to give a make-over, because
1. it feels like a franken-ring since the band and the cluster don't read to me as being of the same era,
2. it needs a major prong overhaul, some are missing and one of the halo stones is very loose, and
3. it's currently a size 5, and doesn't even fit my pinky.

My thoughts are as follows:
1. I definitely want the head to be platinum, and rotated E-W,
2. I would like the band to be yellow gold, but thinner and more interesting (sculptural or carved shoulders?),
3. should the halo stones be larger? (this would be sz. 8.5-9, so more finger coverage wouldn't be a bad thing, but I don't want to overwhelm the moval. Center stone is 10x5mm, halo were stated to be.12-.15 each.),
4. what about bezel rather than prongs? Lose too much light return?,
5. I like the air line gap, but it's not a must.

Here are some inspo pics. Unfortunately, not many antique E-W clusters out there.

@Niel 's fabulous spinel cluster:

Love the shoulders on these:

So as you can see, I don't have a cohesive style idea, but gosh this has the potential to be so beautiful, I'm open to all thoughts/inspo! Would likely go to DKJ, CvB, or Sako. Thoughts?

What a perfect makeover project!

I think Niel's cluster is a wonderful starting point that would tick a lot of boxes of what you say you want. What about @elizat's lovely sapphire ring by CvB as more inspiration?

Have you drawn out a cluster on paper and put it on your finger? Or even printed out a photo of the current ring and cut it out so you can turn it E/W? I think the current proportions between the stones look great but of course it's your ring and your finger!

I think this will be a fun project because the stones are great cuts. I’m partial to bead set clusters myself, but whatever way you go it will be fabulous. This is my e/w cluster IMG_8046.jpeg

Have you thought about rehabbing the setting of the stones, turning it E/W and having a shank that you like added? I'm assuming that could be done.

I remember this ring! The stones are fabulous! How is it size 5 when it said 6.5? Whatever you come up with is sure to be stunning!

Do you find the halo stones and center stones match to the naked eye? Or does the center stone appear warmer?
I wouldn’t bezel it I would hate to drop that much on a setting just to kill the center stone. Which I worry it might.

This has the airline you like, and a slightly less busy shank

There is a cluster in SMTB right now that is like exactly what you should do.

The person who bought it from Dolly (who sold it to me) had it sized down.

It's definitely a possibility, and would likely be the most affordable option. There's a curvature to the bottom of the cluster which gives me pause, as it wouldn't sit flush if turned E-W, but that is likely fixable. 20240723_143557.jpg

I guess you could investigate that just to know if it's an option.

That's definitely my fear. I think the center is probably 1-2 shades lower than the halo are, but would not be noticeable to the casual observer.

Well I dont care about the casual observer lol. Care about you! Do you notice? I wonder if setting the center in platinum and then the halo stones in gold to match the shank might even it out a bit.
I think doing a collet setting of plat would be the best of both worlds I don’t want a bezel to mess it up but I do think some white metal around it might be nice.

Something like this for example.

Then I would probably do the halo and the shank in gold, if the color difference in the halo diamonds bothers you.

I think this looks like it’s got a bee in the edge. I think it’s supposed the be a flower. I think the idea of anything at the base of a split shank would be cute. Maybe a tulip.

I don't have anything useful to contribute, I'm terrible at designing anything lol! However I think @Niel has a very good eye and she comes up with very innovative designs based on her own collection she has shared here.

The original ring is very pretty but I'm sure you will come up with something that takes it to the next level and I can't wait to see it.
