So I know most of you are against purchasing gemstones on eBay but let’s not beat me up on the purchase. Last week, I won an auction for a white sapphire and the seller promised to get the stone certified if I won. I understand the certification is probably not even worth the paper it is written on but wanted it anyways. Today, he sends me an email stating that there is a small problem – help me figure what is really going on. Mind you, his English isn’t great and it is hard to understand.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seller: Stone is too clean and the lab can’t check (don’t know what he meant). He offers me an alternate stone that he claims is similar (although it is actually smaller by .1 ct), He sends a certificate and offers a discount on future stone.

Me: Asked for clarification if he is telling me that the original stone is not natural.

Seller: Claims that the original stone is a natural sapphire. Explains that he needs to go to a more expensive lab to get it certified because the stone is too clean (doesn’t make any sense). He recommends that I just take the other stone he recommended. He goes on to tell me that he purchased a lot of 5 sapphires. He already sold one and I purchased another one from the lot. He said the other 3 remaining stones can get the low cost certification but mine can not. He offers to send me the 3 stones and I can pick the one I like and then return the others.

Me: Ask for clarification why my stone will cost more to certify than the other stones.

Seller: Claims that the other stones can be certified with a smaller lab because it is below 0.8 ct. He said they are used for smaller or cheaper stones. The one I won is just over 0.8 ct and the lab does not have “big machine and costly chemical” to check. He claims that he usually uses a bigger lab (AIGS) to certify more costly stones.

Me: I told him that I want the original stone. If he doesn’t want to pay for the certification, I am fine with that and will have it appraised myself. I ask for a full refund including shipping if it turns out not to be a natural sapphire.

Seller: He offers to certify the stone and that we split the cost. If the stone turns out to be fake, he will pay for the whole certification process.

Me: I confirm that he feels the stone is real and that I rather have it appraised here instead of paying him to get it certified. I again ask for the refund policy to be honored.

Seller: Mentions that he has a small confusion with the stone (assuming he thinks it could be fake). He offers to refund my money and send me the other stone free of charge. He asked that if I am satisfied to purchase more from him in the future.

Ditto. Sounds like a scam if I''ve ever heard one.

Sounds like the seller is trying to back out anyway so you''re probably safer cutting your losses I''m afraid. Really annoying for you though.

Stones to stay away from on ebay are spinel, sapphires, rubies and emeralds, and diamonds (unless it''s a reputable dealer that a lot of people know and trust and they do exist on ebay). I saw a great deal on a really pretty yellow diamond on ebay last week. Emailed the seller to ask if it was clarity enhanced, I knew it was probably natural color, never heard back. Well, passing on that one.

Sometimes I take a chance on ebay, but again, it''s usually a chance. You can easily obtain white sapphires from reputable dealers. Good luck!!

+1.

make him an offer: you won''t give him negative feedback in exchange for his allowing you to back out of the deal.

I think I''ll use a quote from Monty Python and the Holy Grail:

"Run Away! Run Away!"

Charmy, can I clarify - he is offering to refund you for the first one and give you the second one free of charge, yes? Why not just take it, did I miss something?
I agree though that you definately don''t want the first one.
Chances are the second one is also fake/misrepresented -but hey, if its free !

The jewelry forums on e-Bay are full of horror stories.

One currently being debated involves overseas sellers who ship a synthetic stone after insisting their product is genuine. When the buyer discovers the deception the seller is as accomodating as can be, offering exchange or refund and profuse apologies. Once the buyer returns the stone, the seller claims they shipped a genuine gem and the buyer returned a synthetic. Buyer is out their stone and the purchase price with no recourse.

Of course it''s also possible your seller is perfectly legitimate and trying to satisfy you.
Personally, I''d take him up on the offer to refund your money and then look elswhere.

Good luck!

Sorry, can''t answer. Too busy running away from it!

The offer of giving you a refund and sending you the other stone free of charge......Sounds sketchy/too good to be true even if the stone is a fake. I think if you took him up on the offer, he would probably charge double the shipping??? I would just politely get your refund.........and Stay Far Away from that seller. One red flag kills the deal for me. There are too many red flags here.

This is a scam. You have no why of knowing which was the "original" stone. He can send you anything claiming it''s the original or "other" stone. And to split the cost of certifying? To even offer that when it was part of the original deal shows this is not right. Get a refund asap.

I would not do ANY business with him. Just pass on by and find another seller all together.

they call that "Bait And Switch".

Walk away from it.

I say pass also. I get tempted by Ebay also but it usually seems too good to be true.

Thanks all for your advice. He said he was going to refund my money today but still waiting on it. I know there is a time difference so I am not going to get worried yet. I will let you guys know how it all goes. No more eBay gem shopping for me - the temptation isn''t justified.

There are reputable dealers on ebay, and many of them are pricescopers as well. If you''re ever interested in a stone, you should run it by PS''ers. I think you can get great deals on tourmalines and other kinds of stones on ebay. I''m just very leary of sapphires, emeralds and rubies on ebay. I just won a sphene on ebay that is gorgeous, and I''ve also won a very rare color of tourmaline as well. Most of my ebay experiences have been extremely positive ones, but I''ve been gem collecting since I was a teenager back in the dinosaur era.

Thanks again for all your advice. I did get my money back. Actually I got more than I paid due to the huge drop in the Canadian dollar.

For now, no more eBay gem purchases for me until I know what I am doing. I purchased way too many that are on their way already. Luckily they were cheap and I will use them as decor on art projects around the house.

tourmaline_lover - I wanted to thank you especially. You have been so helpful and so sweet throughout all my silly threads.

I am glad you got your money back and then some! I too have purchased several litlle gemmies on Ebay that were in expensive enough that I thought I would take a chance. Knock on wood, I was quite pleased with what I had purchased... in fact, I was quite impressed. There really are some great Ebay sellers out there... you just have to weed through the garbage to get to them.

I am glad you got your money back. Ebay has been so very good to me. I take chances but if you learn how to buy you can buy your fine jewelry, diamonds and gems for 10 to 20 cents on the dollar of retail price. If you want some tips email me.

Lisa

Lisa - thanks so much for the offer. It''s too bad there is no way for me to contact you off PS. They used to have a wonderful private message feature but I guess it isn''t around anymore. I wonder why.

OOhh I'd love to know your secrets! I have been looking non-stop on Ebay lately for a decent OEC, but I just can't seem to find the right mix of a great stone, good vendor, and cheap enough price...I am always jealous of the wonderful finds PS'ers show off from ebay..
LisaRN, perhaps if you wish to share I can message admin and ask if we can share email addresses? (only if you like)..

Just wanted to give everyone an update. I got a full refund as I mentioned above. The seller also sent me two stones for free. Both are certified (some small no name). Anyways, they are really very pretty. One is a white sapphire and the other is a white zircon - both are around 6 cm. I am thinking if I should just send him some money.

I think those were "shut up" presents so you won't give him bad feedback. I don't know if I'd send him money, he did cause you an inconvenience.

That was my thought too...

True. I guess I will keep my shut-up presents and take the bribe. Afterall, he was was honest with me and refunded my money.

Hi Charmypoo...glad it worked out in your favor...this person was fairly honest with you...he could have gotten it ''certified'' anywhere and sent you a fake stone...

Ebay can be a great place or a nightmare...

If you haven''t found it already...eBay has a great place to learn about ebay and ask questions...it is a member based forum

called the Answer Center I read in there all the time...it a full of info...have learned a lot by just lurking...some of the posters can be a bit snarky...but generally have the info you need...lots of info about policies...

If you look at the main Ebay page..upper right...click on community, then answer center...it is split into catagories...
