I decided for my girlfriend''s birthday if I put something together on my own it may be more special. Anyway she is into antique like settings, and I came across this setting which is not to expensive. Here is the setting I want to put some kind of a colored stone in there. This place will put in a few stones for an additional $30-100 depending on which I choose (or I can order a stone from elsewhere and have it put in) The only options they have is amethyst, citrine, garnet, and topaz. I thought an amethyst may look cool, but you all know better than I do.

Thanks for any advice again!

Can you send them a stone for them to set?

Does she have a favorite color or better yet, gem stone?

Her favorite colors are green and blue. I just don''t want to order a stone on the internet and not have it fit, so I figured asking on here would be my best bet. I need to have the ring by May 9th, so if I have to have it set by a lock jeweler that is fine as well. But any advice/links are really appreciated.

What a great idea for a present!

I looked at the link you provide for the setting you selected -- I do like the setting. However, just as an FYI: I recently returned two settings I purchased as a first-time buyer from that vendor. Both problems related to sizing -- one setting was stretched very thin and out-of-round, the other setting was not sized to the actual size ordered. The settings otherwise were acceptable. Since this was my first experience with the vendor and both settings had problems, I decided to return them. The vendor provided a full refund, and did mention she recently had some problems with her goldsmith and that she should have checked the products more closely before sending them to me.

Perhaps your setting will be in a standard size or the problem has been rectified at the vendor''s end.

As to stone selection, I love amethyst or garnet in this vintage setting.

If it was me, I would like to have a beautiful blue topaz... but a really beautiful well cut!

P.S. I just noticed your post that says you''ll need the ring by May 9th --
I ordered my settings in mid-March and it took more than 3 weeks until I received it. When vendor emailed me the shipment info, she apologized for the delay (also said this was because of the goldsmith).

For stone selection, if she likes blue, go with the sky blue or london blue topaz, both of those would look good in that setting.

Good luck!

Very pretty. You might also consider a blue / violet spinel.

Marymm,

Really good advice and information on the setting. I actually contacted the women via facebook, so I am hoping she let''s me know if they can do it in a timely manner. If it is a day or two late I guess that is not the end of the world as I can take her out for dinner and let her know it''s on the way. I can''t find nice settings like these anywhere on the internet for that price... most are well more expensive.

Thanks for the suggestions on the stones... one more question. It says it fits a 7mm round stone. Does that mean I should be looking for 7mm exact? Or slightly smaller to ensure it fits regardless? Sorry if these are dumb questions!

That is a great find, and saves me $100, gives me a little more room to work with a nicer stone. The seller has all positive feedbacks and a week long return policy, so may be worth a shot there since it does not take 2-3 weeks for the setting to be made.

They must have a mold for this type of setting, but it still looks nice

I''d try to get a stone from some place else if it''s possible, cause I''m not crazy about them offering the above mentioned stones. The reason is because they don''t offer you specific stones, but only let you specify a variety. Those are some of the most commom varieties you can find (practically everybody has them on offer), and since they don''t offer pictures of specific stones, who knows what quality you''ll get. It might turn out that they''re nice, but it might turn out that they''re not pretty at all. Sort of like buying from shopping networks - you never get a piece that looks exactly like the one showed on the air.

That said, I second the suggestion to consider a light blue spinel, if you can find some within your desired budget.

I realize that finding a stone might take some time, but with a bit of help from the Pricescope folks, it can probably be done in time. Somebody (more experienced in shopping) please correct me if I''m wrong.

Funny, the pic looks exactly the same!

That''s because it is the same. These pieces are all made by Hugo Kohl at filigreerings.com and are resold all over the place by lots of different people. Any jeweler can get these for you and if you have them source and set the stone they will generally offer very good discounts on the entire package, as opposed to your having to source all of the parts yourself and then try and find someone to do a decent job setting the stones. If you are going to source the stones yourself you may want to consider getting the setting first and measuring it, since I''ve found that they tend to work better with stones that are a bit larger than the size called for.
