Hello all,

I’ve just bought a lovely setting from another PSEr and I need to find a diamond to go in there.

I have an O/P triple ex brown tinged pendant and a pair of Q/R and S/T brown tinted studs which are all set in yellow gold and I’d like the ring to go with them.

I’ve found these two diamonds on Brilliance and they seem to be around the right dimensions (the setting can take up to a 7.6mm stone, although I need to verify that with my jeweller once I receive it).

The N colour has a better HCA score and would be AGS 0 quality in cut, but I’m not sure if it’ll be eye clean. The M will be eye clean but falls outside ideal parameters. Both face up average for their weight.

If you had to pick between these which would you go for? Or neither?

I want to keep the cost around or under $5k.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Hmmm...this is a tough one without seeing the diamonds in person, and seeing how they look next to your pendant & studs.

What is your priority -- is it getting close to matching the color of your pendant & studs? Or size or eye-cleanliness?

From the video, the N colored one looks much more brown to my eyes, so maybe I'd select that one if I wanted the color to more closely go with your browner pendant/studs.

But then there's the eye-clean issue, which you won't be able to know until you have the diamond in hand. For me, my color perception far exceeds my focus-on-detail perception, so I think for me, the N diamond would be eye-clean-enough. But your vision may be the opposite (your eyes may pick up more fine detail and less color). Only you know the answer.

I do actually like the M colored diamond, even though it is slightly outside the normal PS parameters. I think it is pretty and is a good price. My only concern is -- is it brown-enough to form a harmonious set with your pendant/studs?

I think it needs to be in the faint to light brown range but as it won’t be right next to it’s partners I don’t believe it needs to be a perfect match at all. In fact I’d probably rather a ring would be slightly brighter. The pendant is noticeably whiter than the earrings when next to each toner but when worn it’s not obvious.

The most important thing for me is cut and that it’s eye clean. Visible inclusions (particularly black specks) in a ring would drive me nuts.

I might ask if someone from Brilliance can actually eyeball the N for me to see if it’s eye clean. I’m hoping the cut will cover for the inclusions.

I like the N more between the two.

I like the photo of the M but only because I always get freaked out by any black camera lens reflection - I know in my head that the N won’t have black shadows in it but I think “ugh!” When I see it!

I see the inclusions, carbon spots on the N. I suppose the question is would that bother you? The M looks eye clean to me…

Yep. That’s pretty much my thought. I think that carbon spot would drive me crazy. The cut on the M isn’t brilliant and it is smaller. But I do prefer the look of it. I really need to measure the setting and get a jewellers view of the optimal size in mm that I need.

I still like this M better than the 2nd one. Both are exceptionally well cut, but the facets in the 2nd one you posted look a little mushy to me between 7 and 9 o’clock.

Thanks so much for your view. Really appreciate it. Diamonds really aren’t my thing - I’m a virtual stranger here as I usually lurk exclusively on the coloured stone forum.
