Help me find an engagement ring - so lost

Hi folks, I am totally clueless about buying a ring for my GF. Frankly, I've been procrastinating so much because the process gives me crazy anxiety. I'm so worried that what I get won't live up to expectations, even though my GF has said she's happy with anything.

She gave me some brief guidelines. Can anyone direct me where I should look or some ideas? The budget is $15k. I've found a few sites that 3 carat rings for under $15k but can those be trusted? Any help so APPRECIATED.

1. Radiant/ radiant with traps
- probably makes the most sense to get the biggest center stone in your budget and then add on the traps later or can get this 3 stone setting with a smaller center stone and upgrade later on in life (center stone in both pics are 3 Carats for reference)
- for this ring, I’d want the thinnest band possible
- leaning towards yellow gold for the band and white gold for the prongs (I think you can get a slightly lower level color if you do a yellow gold band which is my first choice anyways)- maybe around H-J
- I’ll want the radiant to be this shape (rectangle vs square)
- since it’s sparkly, you can get away with a lower grade on clarity (prob SI1 or SI2- as long as you can’t see it with a human eye, that’s perfectly fine)
- I’m a 5.5 in size but 6 is probably fine

2. Emerald instead of radiant cut
- same thin, color of band/prongs as noted above
- color can go as low as K
- probably need to go VS2 but you might be able to get lucky and find a SI1 or SI2 where the imperfections are hidden (you’ll have to look at it)

3. Eternity band
- if the larger stone options don’t fit into your budget, I’m honestly fine with a simple eternity band
- would prefer a square/rectangle shape
- hard to close your hand with super big stones so maybe keep to .20 or .30 carats per stone
- since they are super small, no need to get super good clarity etc

Should also add - I lived in NYC until February but am in South Carolina now.

Is the $15k for the stone or for the stone and setting?

3 carats for $15k sounds a bit fishy. You would have to point them out.

Oh wow, I am not far from you! She has given you some excellent guidelines, so I am sure we can help you. But you won't be getting anything near 3 cts with a $15k budget.

For #3, is she talking about the wedding band? If so, .30 points each is huge and wouldn't even look good with an engagement ring. But let's find the engagement ring and the wedding band does not have to be bought until closer to the time of the wedding!

Also, I just tried to help someone with a radiant and I will tell you, finding a good one is like finding the needle in a haystack. I'd strongly recommend an emerald cut since that is on her list. I think that is more classic and a well cut one will be gorgeous! Not to mention, I think a radiant will show more color than an emerald cut. I am not going to look lower than J because I think you'll see some tint in a J but you'd definitely see it in a K.

The $15k is for the stone and setting. I have a little leeway upwards but trying to stay around that price point.

Here is a sub $15k 3 carat.... Maybe cheaper because its online? Kind of skeptical though.

Good to know! This is the kind of intel I desperately need

Okay, here are two that are promising. The J is one of the least tinted ones looking at the videos. I posted a slightly smaller I color one just for you to see the difference in color and what you can get one color grade higher (and price is higher).

You will not find a nice stone for anywhere near 15k all in at that size. I hate to be so blunt.

When my fiance and I were first looking we prioritized size above all else, and bought a 2 carat diamond for a steal. We knew nothing about diamonds or cut, so we thought it was just a killer deal! Wrong, you get what you pay for, and it was not a nice stone. After wearing it for months, I tearfully confessed how much I didn't like it and we got another stone right before I got married. The original stone was a low color, lots of inclusions, and not nicely cut. But it was big! But guess what, a big stone with poor performance isn't worth it one bit! I traded it for a stone 2/3 the size with glee, because the smaller stone has so much more life and presence!

It was a horrendous thing to deal with, really emotional, very expensive, and I would strongly encourage you to do a quick search on James Allen to get a sense for what you can really afford. My guess is, with trap sides, you are looking at a 1-1.5 carat if your budget is firm. And that is still a really nice sized stone.

If she did not express interest in a stone with a visible tint, I personally would not go below an H in a step cut (i.e.Emerald) - they seem to show more color from what I understand. But some women don't mind a little tint one bit. Inclusions - step cuts are a hall of mirrors! They will show a bit more obviously!

I also looked at B2C Jewels and Blue Nile and neither had anything as good as the James Allen stones at that price point. The K color stones were as high as the J at James Allen. Still looking but we are limited to looking at stones with pictures or videos because you cannot choose a stone without those.

This K is pretty, but you can really see the tint in the video.

I appreciate the bluntness!

Wow, I didn't realize how big the difference in tint is. I'm looking at this in a whole new light (no pun intended)

I do generally recommend I color as the lowest for an engagement ring. But since your girlfriend has given such detailed directions, I would consider J. I personally wouldn't do K because people will see the tint in it. It doesn't matter what color the shank/band of the ring is.

with a diamond like this... do the nicks and cracks come out? Or is this how the diamond arrives on the ring?

I love this one!

The diamond will look exactly like that. It will be smaller but you may as well not look at SI1.

Oh whoops I didn't see that your girlfriend specified J is ok! Sorry about that! I'd steer clear of anything with visible inclusions (that is what those black spots are) - they will be permanent and take away from the sparkle, and are generally distracting / not desired

She did, but I'm thinking she may not realize how tinted it may be? I'm more apt to stick to you and diamondseeker2006 standards of not going below an H or I for emerald cut

This is one from the Jewels by Grace site... it looks somewhat similar to the ones I've seen with my GFs specs but I honestly don't know

This is a J that my mom put together using my GFs specifications... any thoughts?

I am honestly not familiar with this vendor at all, and I didn't think there was such a thing as "Super ideal" radiant diamond.

I am a bit skeptical of this site in general. There are specific vendors that cut ideal cut diamonds (high performance, whiteflash) , and I do not believe this is one of them

***edit - if you like this "look" use it as inspo!

As far as settings go - given budget I think David Klass would be an excellent choice. He is very reasonable price wise, and could pick well-proportioned / matching trapezoid sides for you. You could even ask for a few options, and share them here to get feedback. Just my two cents and what I would do in your shoes!

I am also a big fan of his, so won't hide my bias!

He has done a style like that you are after...

Oh that is beautiful! (the one you shared from Grace)

You've gotta slow down just a bit!

You cannot in any way choose a diamond with no photos. Most radiants are awful and you MUST have photos. Your mom is so sweet to try to help you, but if you want a good diamond, you're gonna have to put your trust in some friendly strangers who have nothing to gain helping you!

This is beautiful, but that center stone is less than 2 cts. Your girlfriend is expecting a much larger stone than that. I wouldn't consider it after reading her preferences. She doesn't want a small F color stone, she wants a much larger J (or go with I color if you are concerned about tint). Not to mention, she wants yellow gold for the setting.

As I look at stones, I always look at diameter measurements. There was another 2.5 ct J stone that looked good, but it was smaller than the one I posted for you. So keep in mind that stones of the same weight are not necessarily the same size.

And...we need to find a diamond before thinking about settings. Your best bet for a lower priced setting will be from the vendor you buy the diamond from. Once you choose a stone, then we will help look at the settings. I like David Klass, too, because his designs and prices are good, but it will take more like a month to get the finished ring after the design is approved.

Here are a few I like, I am not an expert at all, these are just ones I think are pretty!

I am grateful I have you friendly internet strangers! I am more trusting of y'all than I am of my own mother (on the ring issue)!
