My bf and I are going on a much needed jaunt to NYC after my graduation in December.
I''ve never been, but I''ve heard there are a million great places to eat (one of the main reasons I''m so excited to go!!!)-so help me out. What are your favorite restaurants? I''m looking for the whole range--- from cheap hole-in-the-wall joints to upscale places.

also, has anyone eaten at babbo or Aureole?

What type of food do you like? Do you want good food or good scene (or both)? Any part of the city you want to be in?

I''ve never been to Aureole or Babbo, but have been to Mario Battali''s other restaurants (he owns Babbo) and I"m not really a fan. But that''s just me...

Here are some of my favorites, just for example:

Sushi of Gari
Rosa Mexicano
Fresco by Scotto
Oceana
Tao
Geisha
Bond Street
Five Points
Hedeh
BLT Fish
BLT Steak
Flor De Sol
Blue Ribbon
AIX
Jean Luc
Ota-ya
Nicola''s

There are just so many... I would go to http://newyork.citysearch.com or http://www.digitalcity.com/newyork and plug in some names to see if you like any of those.

I have lots more if you''re looking for something specific!

Babbo or Aureole, I''ve heard, are wonderful. You will probably need to make a reservation WAY in advance. I remember trying for Babbo and the line was busy - forever. That was a couple of years a go though so it may be easier now.

My favorites are:
Jane (FI and I went there this past Friday. It was AWESOME.)
Lupa
Yama (on Carmine. Great sushi)
Neptune Room
Nobu Next Door (they don''t take reservations)
Boca Chica (Also doesn''t take reservations)

Good luck! Go to Jane on Houston, between Thompson and LaGuardia. You won''t be disappointed. I''m even thinking of having our rehearsal dinner downstairs in the private room. The food was THAT good.

I loves dives. (Or, should I say, more casual, less $ places)

Katz's Deli - east village, Ludlow Street
**OOPS .. ROSE of India - east village
The Oyster Bar -- in the basement of Grand Central Station ... go to the counters, not the restraunt and try the Clam Chowder or oysters of the day

Also cheesy but good touristy standards ..

Serendipity -- upper east side
Mesa Grill
Virgil's BBQ - times squareish
Waldorf Astoria Hotel lobby for High Tea (my fave!)

Have a great trip!!!

I adore Il Tinello at 16 West 56th street, just off Fifth Ave and it's yummy italian food. Also for a nice lunch I love Acqua Pazza it's off Fifth as well right across from the 21 club, 36 West 52nd street.

Thanks for the tips everyone!

AmandaPanda, we like all kinds of food, my faves though are contemporary American and Italian, and my bf likes sushi and Indian.

Of the list I posted before, the red ones are Italian and the blue ones are sushi. Honestly, I don''t even know the definitionof American anymore, but I put the ones I think are closest in green.

Sushi of Gari
Fresco by Scotto
Oceana
Tao
Geisha
Bond Street

Five Points
Hedeh
BLT Fish
BLT Steak

Blue Ribbon
Ota-ya

Nicola''s

Some of my favorites:

The so-called "Creative American":

Eleven Madison Park
Craft
Blue Hill
Gramercy Tavern

Sushi:

Blue Ribbon Sushi
Yama (only been to the one on Carmine St)
Jewel Bako

Babbo is one of the best Italian places, i've heard only great things about it (never been).

Tabla is probably the best Indian although it's far from a traditional Indian place, more like American with Indian influences.
