Help me pick a ring size...I''m clueless...OK, not totally clueless, but still...

So I know her right hand ring finger is about a 5. Maybe a tad smaller. I know the 5 she tried on fit but it seemed maybe a tiny bit loose to me - although she seemed to liked the size - although she *never* wears rings so I don''t know that what felt good in a 30-sec. trial is what will ultimately be good.

Anyway, I am going to get her the Supercert 6-prong tiffany style. What size should I order? I''ve heard that left hand fingers tend to be smaller. So should I just get her a 4.75? Or a 5?

I''m looking to minimize the amount of resizing that will be needed because it seems to me (from what I''ve read) that far too many people are not happy with the results of a resize. Will it be easier for them to size up or down? Maybe if it''s a better idea to size down I will just go with the 5. I was told by one of their people that sizing by a half size would not be a problem.

How about some advice here people?

it''s hard to guess. every one is different. my left hand is a 3 1/2 but my right/dominant hand is a 4. I think you''d be save going slightly smaller..4.75 and I agree a small amount of sizing should not be a problem..

How about taking her to a jeweler and having them figure out the correct size, that way no one is guessing and crossing their fingers that it fits??

I mean, if you guys have gone ring shopping together already, why not take one more trip out to "look" at more rings and diamonds and "just for the heck of it" get her finger measured.

When my fiance and I went looking at rings before he proposed, I made sure I had my ring size measured and I even went so far as to write it down for him and give it to him on my business card

Well, its hard to say. Usually the dominant hand is larger, but it really depends on the person. It is not always true. But if her right hand was a 5 and she is right handed a good guess would be 4.75 to be safe. It would not be hard to size it a little either way.

That''s exactly my situation - I''m right handed, I''m a size 5 on my right hand, 4.75 on my left. If it''s a wider band bigger than 5 mm, I like to have it sized to a 5, but since I''m married now, my 2 2mm bands are both sized 4.75.

Oh thats so exciting that it is going to be a surprise! Does she have any other rings that she doesn''t wear very often that you can sneak and have measured? I am actually the same size on both hands. And not to make this more complicated but did she try it on in the winter or summer hot or cold environment? Many people''s fingers can be a size smaller in the winter/cold weather vs the summer/hot weather. Just a thought and good luck!

No, she doesn''t have *any* rings.

Fortunately we live in Los Angeles so the winter/summer thing is not really an issue

I''ve heard its a lot easier and cheaper to size down, since gold or platinum will have to be added to size it up. My right ring finger is probably 1/4 of a size bigger, so if I was you, I''d go with a 5 or 4.75 at the smallest. Good luck!

I think generally your dominant hand is slightly larger than the other. My right (dominant) hand is a size 5, but my left hand, they sized me at 4.5, but I like it a little looser (and in case I gain weight or become pregnant) so they recommended I go with 4.75.

I''d recommend 4.75 or 5 for her left hand as well. It''s easier & cheaper to size down & I think you''re safer guessing a bit too big rather than a bit too small with the size. She''s going to want to put that ring on as soon as you propose & would probably be pretty disappointed if she couldn''t get it on her finger.

I''m going to go against the grain and say that underestimating her size by .25 is probably easier and cheaper to fix then over estimating by the same amount.
If the ring is a little too big the jeweler will saw open the ring on the bottom of the shank and then re-sauter them together. However if it''s only a little bit too small, the jeweler can put the ring on a ring mandrel and gently tap it a few times with a padded mallet. And Voilá it''s a bit bigger.
This works for small increases, anything larger will require them to saw open the ring and put a bit of metal in that''s about the right shape, sauter, and then file down the new bit to match the rest of the ring.

If you get the 4.75 and it is just even a little bit too small to where she can''t get it over her knuckle... she''s not going to be able to wear her beautiful new engagement ring around and show it off.

If you get the 5 and it is a bit too big you can take it back and resize it, it won''t be SO HUGE that it''s falling off, but she can wear it and show it to people and then get it resized a bit later.

I would go with the 5 personally, just because I''d HATE it if she couldn''t wear it when I gave it to her
