Hi guys!

So, I have a yummy favor to ask :) I am at a loss (I think I''m just overwhelmed!!) as to what flavors I should ask to sample when we do our cake tasting in a few weeks... We get to pick 3 samples. What are popular combos that people like at weddings?

Here are the options:

Cake layers: Choclate, Yellow, or alternating layers of both

Buttercream filling (choose one or alternate): Choc, Vanilla, rasperry, mocha, lemon, orange, strawberry, coconut, pineapple, apricot, hazelnut, almond, white chocolate, choc ganache

Optional thin layer of jam: apricot, lemon, strawberry, rapberry

Optional syrup (very light flavor, cake is soaked in - if nothing selected, a plain vanilla syrup is used): lemon, raspberry, grand mariner, kirsch (???), rum, mocha, frangelico or amaretto.

Thanks - I am SO excited to hear what everyone recommends! Right now I''m really interested in white choc and choc ganache, but I want to get suggestions :)

My favorite ever cake flavor is Hazelnut with Hazelnut buttercream and a thin layer of Raspberry Jam (seedless!) with Frangelico simple syrup. To me that is HEAVEN in the form of cake. I plan on having it for one of my tiers. Being that they don''t have hazelnut cake I''d go with yellow.

Take my advice with a grain of salt because I''ve made all the stuff myself, and make special occasion cakes for cool people.

Most people like chocolate/yellow with Mocha/vanilla/strawberry/choco, those are pretty common flavors...

I''d taste everything you can though. I''m interested in the intensity of the coconut buttercream because it''s such a subtle flavor.

And it''s Kirschwasser-cherry flavored liquour. Often used in a Black Forest Torte.

omg how fun!! i absolutely love rum cake, but i can''t imagine what it would be like with frosting too? they all sound heavenly, i would never be able to choose!!

My top picks are yellow cake with chocolate or strawberry or coconut (but some people have a very strong aversion to coconut so might not be the best choice). I would also definitely try some of the soaked ones...rum, kirsch, rasberry....

where on earth are you getting your cake and can they send one to calgary???

good luck!!

We are having a 4 layer cake and we chose strawberry w/ strawberry filling, dark chocolate cake w/ andies mint filling (yum), butter-vanilla w/ chocolate chip filling, and another strawberry w/ strawberry filling for the top because that was our favorite. And I think our cake lady is using a simple syrup which makes the cake really moist.

Have fun picking out your flavors!

Ooooooh, Kirsch is cherry-flavoured liquor and it is SO good! Chocolate and cherry are an AMAZING combo (well, to my tastebuds anyway) so I would go with white chocolate cake (so it isn''t really very chocolately for the non-chocolate people, or alt. choc & van), no jam, and the Kirsch syrup.

I also think a chocolate cake with mocha syrup would be delicious, or vanilla cake and amaretto syrup...oh, they all sound so good!

Ask some of the people that are attending your wedding to get some feedback. Personally I like yellow with vanilla or strawberry!

Personally, I''d ask to try the chocolate with the orange buttercream. Of course thats cause I LOVE orange with chocolate (think orange sherbet with chocolate sauce on it, YUM!), and that was a cake I was hoping to get something like for our wedding. Other than that I wouldn''t know what else to pick either! So hopefully one of the other gals suggestions strike a fancy with you

Does your FI have any preferences for the cake and what to try out? I didn''t think mine cared so much as long as it tasted good, but he''s being more picky than I am!!

We just picked our cake at a wedding fair last weekend and the samples were delicious. Our bottom layer is going to be chocolate biscuit cake, the next tier will be chocolate sponge with buttercream filling and the final layer will be fruit cake. If we have a fourth tier (we haven''t picked our cake yet), we might get raspberry sponge cake.

hazelnut anything and I will come running. I would do alternating layers of yellow and chocolate cake with a hazelnut buttercream and raspberry filling. I''m trying to imagine the taste of the syrups...and I don''t know. Either nothing or frangelico, to enhance the hazelnut flavor.

I just wanted to thank you guys all for your suggestions! So, so helpful! I haven''t been on in a few days (my mom was visiting and we went veil shopping...yay!) Anyway, thanks so much for the cake suggestions...I am going to sample several of these! Yum! I will let you guys know what we decide!

I''m not sure if you still want suggestions and I may be repeating others, but I''ll give you the ones I''d choose.

Yellow cake with either lemon buttercream filling and lemon jam (or I''d skip the jam and just have the buttercream filling) OR chocolate ganache. I LOVE chocolate buttercream filling and the idea of having chocolate ganache sounds heavenly.

For a wedding though, as much as I love chocolate, I''d probably go with lemon. I would think that seems more weddingy, if that makes sense. I have to say though, all the options sounds soooooo good and I don''t think you could go wrong.

Have fun at the tasting!

Chocolate or yellow cake, white chocolate, mocha, hazelnut or chocolate ganache filling, with grand marnier, mocha or rum syrup all sound DELICIOUS to me.

We had a white cake with fresh strawberry filling and whipped cream icing, and it was a hit, so I'd try that too. Though I'm not a huge fan of "fruity" cake, I'll make an exception for strawberry.
