Help me with a pear ring setting for my new unheated ruby!

I just bought a gorgeous red ruby, certified unheated, and now I’m trying to figure out a setting. A halo is always an option of course but I’m curious about other unique options. I‘m not huge on the tiara style but I may just need to stare at it a while longer to get used to it. I love ring settings with little ornate details, generally toward the vintage designs. I’m leaning away from moi et toi rings because I think I’d like the ruby to be the star, but still on the fence about it. I’m also trying to decide on what type of metal, etc. and welcome opinions on what you like with a ruby. Also, would you use diamond accents or do something like cobalt spinel melee or another color? Bezel or prongs to let more light in? Ahhhh! So many options!

The pear is .77 carats (7.2 x 4.9 x 3mm) but I have small hands so it doesn’t take much for finger coverage for me. I’ll probably wait a while to set it and would love all your great ideas in the meantime! Also, if you have a setting you’re thinking about selling that would fit, I’d definitely be interested!

Here are a few pics from the vendor. I’m supposed to receive it tomorrow and then I’ll take more pics. I’m so excited, I can barely stand it!

A beautiful ruby! I love Cecile Raley Design's Elizabeth setting. Looking forward to your pictures.

@voce — really pretty suggestion! Thank you

@maryjane04 - ha! As you were typing, I was editing that tiara rings aren’t my thing. However, that first one might be quickly changing my mind!

This halo design is pretty interesting to consider... maybe with diamonds?

That's gorgeous, but imo that looks like a custom ring a PSer has, and it's good etiquette to ask before copying it. Also, the sapphires look custom cut for the halo, so are you willing to pay for diamonds to be custom cut? Just sounds expensive.

I only have one inspiration for pears:

Looking forward to see the finished ring!

Oh yes -- it's custom, found on IG so I didn't know it was a PSer. I would never think to copy without asking first but truly appreciate the heads up. Good call on the diamonds... this may not be the way to go...

To whomever the PSer is that has this ring, it's gorgeous!

No matter what you do, I would consider four prongs, or a v-tip for the pointed part, as many pear settings only have three regular prongs. This makes the stone less secure.

I would also use buttery 18k yellow gold, as I think that alloy would best compliment the stone color.

It’s a lovely ruby, looking forward to your design.

@T L -- Good call -- I'll definitely do that with the tip!

Okay so my pear ruby is now in hand and it's beautiful. A bit of darkness at the tip but that seems typical for a pear cut. I noticed the cut is slightly shallow -- I know this isn't preferable for diamonds but how does it impact a ruby? There's obviously more surface area for the carat which is nice but are there drawbacks to the way it glows?

I also found another ruby for consideration (the oval below). Both rubies are from reputable, PS vendors so no concerns about authenticity. Which do you like better? For some reason, my current ruby (the pear) seems to have more glow to my eye and I like the shape. At the same time, it's smaller and has a little darkness at the tip. The difference in price between the two is about $500.

I'm still learning to analyze gemstone pictures. It's hard because I have the pear in hand but then have to rely on a picture for the oval. I'm hoping some of the experts around here with picture analysis skills can share some opinions and observations! Here it goes:

My current ruby -- 0.88 ct; 7.22 x 4.96 x 3.02 Mozambique; no heat;
(vendor pic because it's too overcast here but the pic is very accurate)

Possible contender: 1.55 ct; Mozambique; no heat; 7.30 x 5.65 x 4.55 mm
