Hi all - I am new to PS, however, I've spent unknown hours on the site up to this point scouring for sizing ideas for a 5 stone wedding band in conjunction with a 3 stone e-ring. I'll spare all the backstory to how I got here, but essentially I had a beautiful solitaire e-ring and am now changing it to a 3 stone setting with a matching 5 stone wedding band. Now...I am ok with the bling, but I also want it all to be complimentary in proportion, which is where all y'all pros come in. I've scoured enough to know there are some beautiful 3 stone e-rings AND 5 stone bands out there.

I am customizing my e-ring and band with BGD. Yaaaayyyy
- I am BEYOND ecstatic to work with them and really ready to get this off the ground, but I'm somewhat unsettled about proportions. I will post the photos of the ring I'm designing from BGD website for reference.

I have a 5.75 finger (will post photos for those of you it may help to see)
My main diamond in the e-ring is 2.38 c, G, VS1 @ 8.64mm.
Currently we have two side stones selected: 0.53 c, G, VS2 @ 5.23mm........ HOWEVER! I am curious as to if I should increase the size of the side stones to 0.6c????

I am thinking of getting the matching 5 stone wedding band in 0.3c/stone for a total of ~ 1.5c. currently the stones available are about 4.3mm (some lower, one or two hundredths of mm larger - so minuscule, obviously). Basically what's available this moment is 0.27-0.35c). I think I feel good about this size for me and my finger. I did go to a few local B&M stores today to see how the sizing might look on my finger, and I will upload them for visualization, also. Another thing to mention is that the band will have a slight curvature to match the e-ring. I feel like I have seen plenty of people post on here with smaller fingers than mine with 30 pointers (and larger) that still looks great and sits well on their fingers (no rubbing, from what they say).

I would LOVE any of you experienced ladies who wear these rings or men who have great taste and/or experience in this area! You guys are so great (from all the posts I've read), so I really look forward to all your advice.

So basically, that is a lot of writing for the following burning questions (other suggestions are VERY welcomed ):
  1. with a 2.38c BGD diamond, should I keep the currently set 0.53 c side stones, or should I go with the 0.6c? I asked Emily at BGD her opinion, and she said leave it (we had originally chose 0.23c for a 2.12c center stone, but the 0.23 sold out before I gave the OK to go with those, and then I decided to upsize...so that's why I'm reconsidering).
  2. Thoughts on the 0.3c, 5-stone band on a 5.75 finger with the above e-ring?

I seriously cannot wait to get this ring set, but I want the dimensions to be perrrrrfeeectt!!

Thank you all in advance for any of your thoughts/opinions, etc. I'll also post a photo of my hand with my initial solitaire that was 2.02c. (basically this diamond was injured in loving it, so that's why we're here). And the last photo I included was a 1ctw and a 4ctw size 6 ring I saw in a store today, with one of their e-rings just for reference.

I look forward to reading any suggestions you may have!

Photos as promised below, if I figure out how to do it properly

** Edit to above post - I think I have settled on leaving the stats of the 3 stone e-ring as is for the 0.53/2.38/0.53 after looking closer at some of the 3 stone rings like @MissGotRocks @the_mother_thing @cflutist @soxfan ring proportions (and mannnyy many other beauties I have seen). Now maybe my proportions are too large...ohhhh the confusion! I have seen theirs a few times and loved them, but wasn't great at navigating PS to find where they previously listed their proportions - makes a big difference once you're on a computer and not a phone!:eek2:

My three stone has a 2.53 center with .33 side stones. I wanted the side stones to be accents so that the center would really pop. No right or wrong way - just a matter of personal preference. For your ring, I personally would not go larger with the side stones. I say this too because of the diamond band you are considering. It is beautiful but if you really want the center stone to be the focus, you have to be careful with adding side stones and a band. If you want it all to blend together, then I think you are on the right track.

Wow…you are going to have a lot of sparkle here! I think I’d be inclined to match the ering side stones to the size of the stones in your wedding band…the .30’s. I like more consistency and seeing .53 stones next to .30 stones seems like they are close but not close enough, if that makes sense! Plus, I’d love to see your center stone be the main focus.

Are you committed to having pave stones on the bands? No matter what, you are going to have a big, beautiful set, but I’d prefer a plain shank. Just my opinion though…go with what your eye prefers!

I have a three stone and a five stone. My 5 stone is about .90ct and I thought I wanted a bigger 5stone and bought a 2.5ct. It was big and beautiful but waaaay too big for me so I sent it back. I will post some photos. The pears are about .30ct each and the main stone is 1.85ct 7.5mm

I recently reset my three stone with .35 cushion sides ( I think) and here's aphoto of it with the .90ct 5 stone band. The 3 stone has some little flower details on the side that I love but as @Patty mentioned, I think that the plain band like my old pear setting, was more complementary and less busy look ..... it was blingy without being too much in my opinion, which should read as when I get the chance, I will be remaking my pear setting!!

I also prefer the side stones more like accents (smaller). Perhaps the size of the 5 stone diamonds or maybe a tad larger.

Thank you all for your responses so far. You are all much more experienced with me, and clearly see more of these rings than I do and have a better idea of aesthetics. I realize some of it is personal preference, also, but that is why this is so hard for me. I have seen so many rings that are beautiful from both standpoints of smaller side stones to enhance center stone and some that have slightly larger side stones. I do know, however, that I don't prefer the three stones that are all the same, or very close to the same, size. Now it's just deciding between the former two scenarios.

@MissGotRocks - yes! I actually really love the dimensions of your ring and didn't realize how much of a difference that would make and clearly does make your center stone pop. I will agree with you, about making the center pop vs making it kinda blend together. I think based on what I seem to be visually attracted to is something in the middle. I don't want them all to be super similar in size, but do like a gradual change, but not suuuuuurree if I want it to be such a large difference. Today I found a ring (forgot to take note of whose it was) but I think it may be just what I'm visually attracted to, which was super helpful to finally come across.

@Diamondbug it is very helpful to see your side stones in comparison to the 5 stone band.

@tyty333 and @Patty thank you for your thoughts on the side stone size matching the band. Those are very good suggestions, and honestly, I hadn't really considered yet making them match...and it does make sense to maybe have both of them be a little larger - at 0.3c than 0.2.

Also, @Patty , I'm not 100% committed to the pave, and in fact, prior to coming across that set, I didn't really care at all for pave, and preferred a clean cut ring. However, there is something I really like about that set as a whole.

I'm going to reach out to BGD tomorrow to see if I can get more insight on their thoughts, etc. I've been mauling over details like this for a few weeks now, so I'm itching to get this to production (and I'm sure they're tired of hearing from me with questions!)

Thank you ALL for your points you've made. More food for thought.

Very exciting! I think you stumbled on my three-stone in a couple of the popular threads… My ring is .44/1.23/.45, and I really like the proportions. I would consider buying some Berricle or other CZ rings to live with the look for a bit to see if you would tweak anything? I buy fakes before some of my big purchases. I know what it’s like to stew over all the decisions!

btw, I’m taking your pic to my manicurist this week. Gorgeous ring and gorgeous nails!

Omg it’s gonna be stunning!!! Can’t wait to see!

Looks like a pretty design.

I am a fan of 3-stone + 5-stone combos where the diamonds on the band end where the side stones on the engagement ring end. But that is kind of an old-fashioned combo. Either that or I would prefer to have all the band stones + e-ring side stone match. But that is just my preference for a tidy look — tastes vary.

Post pics when you get them. Happy jewelry designing.

Yes!! I have run across your ring in a few threads and I did like your proportions, as well! This is a very good idea to buy some CZ rings or otherwise, to get a good idea of how it sits/looks on a hand!

I laughed when I read you were taking that pic to your manicurist! I hope it turned out fantastic. This is actually my favorite look my manicurist does for me (and it grows out so naturally, so my nails last longer :appl:) You'll have send a pic so I can see how it turned out! :D

Thanks!! I think I've finally settled on the proportions and now I'm just so excited for it to be done. Of course, now the 6 week wait ensues.

This is a very good suggestion and a way to keep the look clean. That point wasn't something I had considered! I did actually take this suggestion into consideration when deciding side stone sizes and band stone sizes! I didn't' end up going with the same sizes, however, based on your thought, I chose a size that was 1/2 the diameter in mm, so at least it would be some sort of proportionate and not just a random size. Thank you for the suggestion!

@arete Definitely not as pretty as yours! She really encouraged me to do pink to white instead of all-white hombre. She thought it would yellow after a week or so and that I wouldn’t be happy. But I am going to go for it next time! These are my real nails (acrylic dip, no tip)— but of course the layers make my nails so thick that they don’t look natural! And a bonus shot of my CBI three-stone. :)1501B148-9674-452E-9C68-7729AF0C7DC6.jpeg

Oh wow!! I think she did a great job!! I have recently moved and haven't been able to find anyone in my area (states away, or I'd still drive to my lady) to get it down as good as yours did on the first try! They are slightly different than mine, but I still think they look fantastic.

For your next visit IF you wanted to change things (bc I DO think yours look fantastic as is) - mine aren't actually all white, but the color nearest to my cuticle (your pink), is just a slightly more clearish/neutral color. I think it may be called pearl or something along those lines, but once on, it looks very near to my cuticle color, which is why it grows out so great. I personally, have never had issues with any of it turning yellow, but that could be r/t different brands. When my lady taps the powder on (she uses a brush to tap the white on and then once the white is on, dips my whole finger into the neutral powder to get up to the cuticle), it kinda flows into the rest of the nail, like you see. Honestly, every time she does it, it looks different. Sometimes it is more close to the tip like yours, but sometimes has a longer fade, like in my photo. I like both!

If you feel like your nail is too thick, maybe your manicurist could take the buffer device and lightly go over the nail to even it out and take some of the thickness off? My manicurist does this, and my nails don't feel too thick, like I have had some others leave my nails. After she buffs it with that electronic device, she puts the shiny layer on, whatever that is. Just food for thought - and you might like it better! I'd love to see how it looks next time if you change anything!
