Help me with setting! I’m annoyingly indecisive

Help! I struggled with an HG pregnancy for the past 9 months so I put this project off. Baby is finally here so I’m finally getting around to setting my stone that I purchased a year ago. Problem is, I’m soooo indecisive. It’s a 2.02 ct old mine. Sold to me as an N color (non cert) but I honestly suspect it’s a bit warmer. I’m definitely not an expert but it looks warmer than my O/P was and seems comparable to my Q/R. I LOVE warm stones so I definitely want to play up the warmth. The stone is also a bit wonky- the table is a bit off center. I’m wondering if a prong setting or a bezel would be better to conceal this? I’ll share my ideas but I’m torn between bezel, or 8 prong crown setting, or the evergreen setting by Megan Thorne. Also I LOVE 18k yellow gold but I’m wondering if white gold would play up the warmth better. Please share your opinions and any setting ideas you may have! I’m hoping to get the ball rolling this coming week but I’m sooooo indecisive. 316D8E02-2A77-41B7-9DBD-FA16722F5C9D.jpeg690BBF6F-3AEA-41AD-A95E-2F07B1A38A6F.jpegBEE8219F-7E99-48CD-958A-D630E4D11BC1.jpeg9F40433F-5C14-4992-A2FB-79400B213BA8.jpeg55730DD5-4367-4593-B8AC-AC2AF38969F6.png1C064C24-03DA-40A9-A351-4B0BBFBFC7B7.png91535DAB-B5B4-4D3D-987D-D93E969ABF89.png

I like the antique look with the antique-cut stone. One vote for the lovely migrain bezel and away from the fierce-looking talon prongs. But I guess it won't play up the color as an attribute...

Hi @Mjay! CONGRATULATIONS!!! An HG pregnancy — you are a champion!

Both setting styles are so beautiful (I am no help here lol) I think if I had to choose I’d go for the bezel in this case and size over prongs even though I love those claw prongs!!

Have you considered rose gold?

Congratulations!
Now, I love me some prongs. All the prongs. But, as a new mommy a bezel is the way to go if you're wanting to wear this often. I would go personally go yellow, or even rose to play up the warmth- but unplated white, or even a champagne mix would be marvelous. I think there's a thread on here somewhere about using different alloys. Dk I think has some proprietary ones if I remember correctly.

I love that evergreen setting as a complement to the personality of your omc ....

The color of the metal doesn’t seem predictable in whether it’ll make a difference or not... sometimes it totally changes the look of a ring ... did you try wrapping it with foil/metallic paper ?

I got a white gold basket to play up the color of my light yellow stone and honestly didn’t feel like it made much of a difference , here’s a photo fwiw

congrats!!

Thank you! Rose gold is my favorite! My wedding set is rose gold. I want this alternate set to be different.

That’s beautiful! Do you find the prongs to catch on things (thread, lint etc ) ?

I'm indecisive too. But I know when I've reached the right decision (on anything) because then I stop changing my mind. So personally, I would not act until then. If you're like me, you'll know what type of setting you want if you work at it, then wait a few days to be sure it sticks. Congrats on the baby!

Thank you! Not really ... every once in a while on something like the fluffy inserts you’d find in a little gift box but I can’t remember them getting caught in a sweater for example. The jeweler did a good job shaping them I think.

I played around with metals today and I’m pretty confident that 18k yellow is the right choice. I’m leaning towards a Megan Thorne setting. It’s a bit frustrating that I can’t find any reviews for her on here or many images of her work. I did find a Megan Thorne stockist about 45 mins from me so I’m hoping to go view her work this week. Unfortunately they don’t have an evergreen setting in stock but I’ll at least get an idea of the quality of her pieces from her other styles.

I have been planning to get a Megan Thorne setting for one of my gems and while I haven't actually done it yet, I have corresponded with them over email (this was pre-covid) and they were very nice.

Good luck with the visit! That color combo looks so pretty

Definitely yellow gold with a light yellow diamond! I think the Megan Thorne ring would be pretty!

I had HG with my third pregnancy and it was almost intolerable. Hugs to you and congratulations!

I find that rose gold plays up yellow tint. I’ll be setting an M color diamond in unplated white gold to match it. And I vote for prongs.

I like the Megan Thorne pieces. I didn't know she did work with a customer stone. Wonder what her pricing is like?

So, on your stone- do you want to play up the warmth or tone down?

I have old cuts that range from k to q/r. I personally think yellow makes them warmer looking and less ivory/old lace.

I thought the quote I got was very fair. Obviously not the least expensive ever but I thought reasonably priced.

Gorgeous stone :) I agree that a bezel is going to be more practical but I'd ask the advice of your jeweller as I feel your OMC is just that wonky enough that you'll notice it more with a perfect metal circle around it. Find a skilled bench that can make it work and then no problem :) Prongs however would definitely visually make the stone seem symmetrical.

I would do the megan thorne. I have purchased from them and have been happy with the quality of what I bought.

I’m living for 18k yellow gold at the moment. Faux bezel with prongs maybe?

I love the 8 prong ring setting. That satin-matte finish is so beautiful! Congrats on your baby!

I received a quote for her evergreen setting without any modifications and I feel it was a fair price for a designer setting. That being said; I’m probably going to do a few modifications and have her create something unique. I LOVE warm stones so I definitely want to play up the warmth. I’m leaning towards yellow gold.

I saw some of her pieces in person today and they are amazing!

I viewed some of Megan Thorne’s pieces in person today and was absolutely wowed by them. Her designs are gorgeous and the craftsmanship was impeccable. I’m definitely going to set the stone in one of her settings. Unfortunately the jeweler didn’t have the evergreen setting in store but she had a few others. Sounds like Megan Thorne can combine aspects of a few of her settings and create something unique for my stone. I’m going to send it to her and see what she thinks as far as prongs vs bezel. I might even do some warm side stones. I’m wondering if I should go through the jeweler or work directly with Megan Thorne
