Hi All,

Apparently this is where the best of the best come to discuss diamonds. Ive been looking for the past 2 months and have become obsessed with finding the right diamond.

I think ive finally found 2 that meet my requirements but am struggling to decide between the two.

Option 1. is a 1.8CT F VVS2 with no fluorescence, ratio 1.36. GIA 6201033188

My concern with this one is the ratio is slightly less than i think what im after, other than that it seems pretty perfect. Looking at approx 22k USD including ring design.

Option 2. is a 1.7CT E VS1 with medium/faint fluorescence, ratio on this is a 1.46 don't have the GIA for this one.

My concerns with this are the medium fluorescence i havnt seen this one in real life and dont have the GIA on hand but ive been told a second report grades the fluorescence as faint. Also on this one Table % is greater than the Depth. 63 to 60.7 ive read some places that matters.

approx cost is 20USD including ring design on this one.

The first option meets all my boxes, maxes out my budget but i keep worrying ill regret the fatter ratio of 1.36 especially when my girlfriend has thin fingers. Option 2 has a better ratio and allows me to save 10% but ive not yet seen it in real life and option 1 might be gone by that time. Also worried about the fluorescence and table>depth %

Any advice would be awesome and much appreciated.

We need pics and video to help you assess the stones.

Unfortunately i dont know any way to find videos or photos just the GIA. is there any advice you can give on the fluorescence or the table>depth impact in general?

Fancy cuts cannot be chosen by numbers. You need to see videos to know how they'll perform. Buying sight unseen is a VERY bad idea

Medium /faint fluor is virtually never an issue, so I wouldn't worry about that. But the cut is extremely important, and you wont know how it looks without seeing it IRL

Thanks the cut on the reports seems okay and i have the option to order it in and cancel if i see issues when viewing it IRL. So i might go ahead with option 2 then as it saves me a few $ and has my preferred ratio.

Will ask him for a video and post it here if i get anything.

@Karl_K @tyty333 can you help analyze the cut? Trying to think of other oval cut experts to tag.

Very typical 8 main offset faceting pattern. It has "earmuffs" (areas on the ends of the stone) which tend to go dark in bright light.
Does have a little something on the table (crystal) but probably not visible at normal viewing distance. Can we look around for you
to see if we can find a 6 main in your budget?

So this is a typical oval with 8 main offset faceting pattern. You have nice facets in the green area that return light well. The brown
area tends to be "mushy" and does not return light well. You want to find a stone that as it turns more "nice facets" light up in
the brown area. 6 main stones tend to perform better than 8 main offset. You can see how many "mains" an oval has by viewing
the pavilion diagram on the GIA report.

Here is a 6 main. Is this too long and "pointy" for you?
here is the very poorly traced 6 mains in the stone. You will still have some mushy areas under the table but outside of the
mains in a 6 main so you end up with a lot less mush than an 8 main offset. There are also 8 main (straight) ovals that may*
have better light return then the typical 8 main offset.

Ahhh thanks for that advice, Id previously been told the 8 mains cut is better as more light is reflected ? Would GIA 2436519687 be the recommended cut ?
Also any concern with this stone having medium fluorescence

GIA 2436519687 would be a 6 main (6 main facets on the pavilion side), so yes, this would be one I would like to see. Just because
its a 6 main doesn't mean that it will be a good performer. There is no preferred/recommended cut. You can
find good and bad ovals of all the different pavilion types however, in general, after doing a deep dive on ovals, 6 main ovals
tend to have better light return. And again, ovals can not be evaluated by the numbers. You must see the stone, see up close
pictures of the stone, and view videos to see how it performs as the stone moves. Aset images can also help shine the light on
performance (although its only 1 static view).

For education purposes here are some of the faceting patterns for ovals.

4 main (may or may not have better light return.)

Branded 8 mains...Here are some branded ovals that will have better light return but not seeing any
in your desired specs.

https://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD21158822 these are my favorite

Branded 10 main

Another 6 main to view.

Are you able to see the difference between the light return of a "nice" stone vs. a typical stone? Most* jewelers,
in my experience, will not be up on all this unless they have done a deep dive into ovals. Or, they may know the
info but know that it's harder to find a well-cut oval so they just dont disclose the info. Or....they may have come
to a different conclusion than I have. Just trying to make you aware of the different options and hope that you
can find a beautiful oval that you will love.
