Hello all,

So I bought a diamond and for the price, ct weight, colour and clarity I thought I was getting a bargain… as the auction was coming to a close in 4 mins I bid without looking closer at the specs ‍♀️

The details of the stone are below, I ran it through HCA and it came out 5.8.

It’s for a pendant and not a ring, don’t know if that matters.

Any help or advice you can offer would be much appreciated. I paid $5900… which seems very cheap for the size…

It’s not expensive for the specs. But when you see it in person it may be quite lifeless.

Very few people on this forum will think this is an acceptable diamond because it’s not a great cut or high colour and clouds as the primary determinant of clarity can make for a dull stone. It will not sparkle and zip like a top quality diamond - but 99% of the earths population couldn’t tell the difference anyway. And if you’d bought a stone for that price in a mall jewellers you’d have got a piece of crystallised spit.

Overall you paid a reasonable price for an Ok-ish diamond, which most people would be happy with.

I definitely wouldn't recommend this stone

I can - there’s a 14 day return policy. Do you think it will be that bad?

Yes. I have not run it through HCA but with that dining room table and the 41.2 pavilion it's a very bad fail

Thanks so much for your detailed explanation. It looks like I’ve purchased a dud. Such a shame as I wanted a 1ct for a pendant to wear every day but didn’t want to spend lots of ££. Seem to have jumped the gun a bit with this purchase. You live and learn…

How sparkly your diamond is depends primarily on how well cut it is. So cut is what you want to focus on.

I would suggest considering around just below the 1ct mark (like 0.9ct) if you want value. You pay a premium at the 1ct mark (high demand at 1ct mark for rings).

If you are open to other options, here are examples of far better cut stones around a similar budget:

0.9ct H VS1

0.945 ct J VS1

If you can do a J, the WhiteFlash option is the best of the best in terms of cut. They specialize in super ideal cut diamonds. WF also has an excellent upgrade policy if you ever you want to upgrade size or color down the track.

Here is a page on PS recommended proportions that could help you search:

Try to go for the All Around (Near Tolkowsky) green column (safe parameters for sparkle under various lighting conditions). The Firey Balanced and Bright Balanced diamonds can be nice too.

Agreed. Going with a slightly smaller stone with a significantly better cut would give you an overall more sparkly and lively diamond.

Please don’t feel downcast. In monetary terms you DID get a bargain. Similar stones sell for more money.

Did you get the best cut most beautiful diamond in the world. No. But you paid a very reasonable price for what you got. That’s not a bad thing!
