Hi All,
I’m asking your expert advice on a 3 carat high F color SI2 3 carat cushion. I went to look at it and to my eye I see broad facets across the middle, sort of where an oval’s bow tie would be, and then more splintery facets to the north and south.
The length-width ratio of this stone is 1.31 so very “oval-ish”.
The GIA says it’s a Cushion Brilliant.
I’m wondering if this facet pattern is considered normal.6957BC2D-94D0-4935-9887-36B9AA6E6638.jpegD05DFB38-8A9E-497F-A0A7-1D20572EB36B.jpegDE612D54-AAAA-4B02-ACD5-B7CEBB10B5E4.jpegB093D843-376B-42FF-AC60-CB48D8345766.jpeg
I’ve only had MRB but loved the high color of this and the elongated shape.
The only thing I worry about is the different facets.
It’s slightly out of my price range but if it’s a good one, I may make an all-out effort.
Thank you!

It looks like it has 6 mains. Can you post the report on the stone?

It does have a long feather on the side...how would you set it?

Would it bother you if the center goes dark in bright sunlight? Its not a bow-tie (IMO). It will likely go dark like a well-cut round
brilliant goes dark in bright sun.

What is the return policy? Can you buy and play with it and see if you like it...return if you dont?

For some reason that long feather doesn’t bother me.
The dark spot inclusions are the ones that bug me. Although that said, one well placed carbon dot can be charming...sorta like a beauty mark on a 1940’s pinup girl.
I love the way this stone is presently set which is that simple platinum double claw prong (double claws always get me!)
And yes. My lovely jeweler will absolutely let me babysit her to get to know her a little better.

That shape is so cool. I prefer it to an oval. And with that shape you could find some interesting side stones and make an awesome 3 stone with MAJOR coverage. Not that you were asking me of course. :Up_to_something:

Haha @LLJsmom !!!
I see you have three-stone on the brain and I don’t blame you.
Exactly the trajectory I’m aiming for.
Eventually.

@Efleon I’ve been following your threads and my curious self just has to ask—Is this yet another big diamond purchase or did you return your previous one? Sorry if I’m being nosy but wow! Talk about collector’s goals!

It’s funky - I dig those main facets.

Looks like this cushion has the crushed-ice look. It is very subjective. Personally, I prefer more defined facets, but I know many people love the crushed-ice look. The main downside of the crushed-ice cushion is the major leakage. But if you love the diamond, you love the diamond :)

If you like the elongated look with crushed-ice, radiant cut diamonds are also a great option.

@nala thanks for watching! I honestly thought no one was paying particular attention.
So the story is I’ve been testing out Winnie the 2.03 F/SI OEC in her fantastic original Edwardian filigree setting and she’s amazing and I’ve bonded with her but I’m having trouble integrating her into my Team. She really doesn’t play nicely. Needs to be by herself if you know what I mean.
And then I started thinking about my goals.
This whole exercise started because I wanted to upgrade my e-ring. Then when DH balked at that idea and we had that involved discussion, we agreed I would keep the e-ring.
So as I’m currently still “on approval” with Winnie I started looking at other things and this cushion really is wowzers. When I tried it on I felt very much like a princess.
The cushion definitely would satisfy my upgrade goals.
But then would I miss those checkerboard facets on Winnie?
I don’t know.
My jeweler is so very kind he will let me spend time with the cushion and then decide.
I just can’t get back to him until later this week or next!
So please stay tuned.
And thanks for noticing!

I don’t generally like crushed ice which is why this stone confused me.
I love the high color and stunning elongated shape!
The setting is perfect as well.
I’m stuck at the facet pattern. I know I love the broad facets across the middle but I can’t figure out the north/south junctions.

Funky good.
Or
Funky kinda, well, um....just plain ole funky?

Good funky - for me funky is always good, I ought to have said that :)

I like a stone that stands out a wee hit. The stone needs to light perform well, don’t get me wrong, but there are soooo many identical cut stones out there nowadays that I like it when you can see a cutter did something different and it worked out.

Here’s a quick vid I snapped last time I was in there.
I think it plays nicely with my French cut eternity which is certainly something.
Thank you.
I will see if I can bring her home for a couple days...

And that setting is bank - so luxurious and old world :)

I love this. Like you I get rather bored with seeing cut after cut which is just the same. I actually really don’t like MRBs at all because they just seem soulless to me.

This has PERSONALITY!

Yeah for you :wavey: When I read ‘bring her home’ I heard ‘Bring Him Home’ from Les Mis in my head. Henceforth, if you keep it, I’m calling your ring Marius. You may not like that, but it’s Marius now.

Yes - so many of the MRBs are the Stepford Wives of diamonds.

OMGOODNESS @caolsen I Love that!
Sometimes, stones find us.
Marius he/she is.
Now excuse me while I shake out every sofa cushion.
Marius will require a full-court press to go from dream to reality!

Your jeweler is a wicked man allowing you to bring stones home and play with them! He knows what he's
doing!

By all means, I think you should bring it home for a test drive! No harm done if it doesnt work out!

Seriously @Efleon it would be dangerous for me to live close to a jeweler like yours!

Exactly my thoughts.

It is a blessing and curse.
I’ve learned so much but it’s also dangerous.
Frequently I will stop by and they will be just back from a buying trip and I get to help them sort through the new treasure and offer what I think “the jewelry-philes “ will grab up right away. Other times, someone needs neck/ear/hand shots so I get to model some really big deal pieces!
Other times they just let me troll through their trays. There is nothing that helps train the eye better than picking through an entire tray of old cut diamonds!
Oh....and one time I was behind the counter and actually sold a customer a wedding band!
Anyway, I hope to get in there this week or next!!

Following this to see what you end up doing!

Thank you @Mreader
It’s nice to have someone sit alongside me while I work through what I’m doing.
Any thoughts welcome....in fact, since you asked, I love the big blingy nature of this cushion but the Tiffany Lucida is understated perfection.
I’m leaning towards bigger is better but ....hmmmmm

From the way you are describing it, you don’t seem entirely sold on this one.
