(Please excuse my primitive technical drawing abilities)

Hi. I have a slightly rectangular AVC that measures 6.44 x 5.77. I am looking at some pairs of step cut trapezoids as side stones. The pair that I have on hold are 4.5 x 3 x 2. This all sounded OK in my mind until I decided to draw it to scale.

Are these traps too big full stop? I do want them under the girdle of the center AVC and I do not want to see any gap between the three stones. They look a little too big, right?

Yes, for the first time ever I intend to use a PS-favored designer. But I am sourcing my own stones now and must save up, (probably for a year), before shopping the job out for quotes. So I want to establish good proportions now.

Thanks much for any help or advice!

We need @yssie ... you wont be getting that "full" view from the top because the stones will be at a tilt. I think they may be fine
but I don't have any objective data to provide you.

Note that it is up to you how low you want to place the traps compared to the center stone. Typically they place it right below the girdle, and it would help close the gap that you have identified at the top and bottom of the sides. However I do think they are too large if you are not going to want to place them any lower. (The lower you place them, the less the gap you have because the center stone would overlap it more). You should target the length to be equal to the straight portion of your diamond. So maybe closer to 3.5mm - 4mm in length, if that drawing is true to the diamond.

I always thought this ring owned by @2ndchance had gorgeous proportions- I pinned it a long time ago when I was considering an AVC

You should target the length to be equal to the straight portion of your diamond.
I would 100% second this as the safest and most flexible proportions option - going this route will give you the most freedom in terms of options for settings later on ❤️

Yes, the proportions are exact to the diamonds. I agree - I think 4mm would be a better fit. Thank you!

This is my main inspo ring!

But I don’t know the dimensions of her traps. Also, the vendor I am looking at sourcing mine through has really spready traps which makes it harder to extrapolate. I do think 4mm will be easier to work with though. Thanks!

Great mock up picture! I like being able to visualize things too, I think your drawing is super helpful :) can’t wait to see pics when you finish the project! Are you doing natural traps or labs?

I’m not sure if it’s appropriate to answer that here in rocky talky? That, in itself, is probably answer enough
