Hi all,

New to the community. Looking to purchase an engagement ring and the salesperson at a local store in the Diamond District offered this diamond below which Blue Nile is also selling. They offered it for $11,500, am I getting fleeced on a bad diamond? I saw from the GIA report the cavity in the diamond and thin girdle, is that a valid concern or is this a good deal?

I will say that in person the diamond looked beautiful, obviously an untrained eye but it sparkled nice and appeared pretty eye clean. I'm not looking for anything flawless or perfect, but I do want something nice that will last a lifetime.

Would love some feedback and help!

I'm not a huge fan of that oval, but I am not an oval expert so it's hard for me to suggest alternatives. @tyty333 Is very good at finding nice ovals

With the caveat that I'm not an expert, I like these:

Also I put your max budget as 13000, and G as minimum color

This is a different direction, but if you like the sparkle in that one, you might want to look at the Elyque Ovals like one of these:

Great point. Elyque are the best ovals available in terms of light performance.

:naughty: I would pass on this one.

The blue nile oval that @Lookinagain suggested looks like a better option (strong florescence, so you'd have to be okay with that), but without seeing it in person it is hard to know for sure especially with ovals.

Keep in mind if you only looked at the diamond in the store, they will have lighting that optimize's the sparkle factor, so if you can, you want to make sure you can analyze the performance in several lighting environments.

I'd recommend searching the term "oval" on PS to review the advice others have gotten, check out @CaprineSun 's recent thread for a real life example of a beautiful oval bought online, watch Rhino's School of Rock/Good Old Gold youtube video's on how to analyze diamonds in different lighting environments for performance, look at charts with recommended cut proportions for ovals, etc. etc. etc.

Fingers crossed an oval expert will see this thread and help you out!

Was checking out what else this jeweler had. This one looks cleaner, they don’t have a video but looks to have less of a bow tie. Went up in clarity so lost the cavity. Supposed to go in this week to see more

I can't comment on the inclusions, but the dimensions of this stone are much better and from that photo, this stone appears to be a much better choice, worth seeing in person for sure!

Are you working with Yeukitel @ IDJ?

He is a really good dude. Let him know you are looking for a “PS quality” stone and he will know what to show you. He has a real knack of finding quality stones for lower budgets.

Yes i am! He’s been great and very helpful. The first stone he showed me was the one i originally posted to start the thread. With the intention of stretching my budget and getting a quality stone. Just not sure how i felt about the cavity from what I’ve seen online so supposed to go back later in the week. Thinking maybe I’ll stretch to the VS2 clarity. Try and find some value there and peace of mind. Such a big purchase I just want to do it right!
