Hi!!! Long-time lurker, first-time poster. I have a BAAAAAD diamond addiction! LOL!

My 30th birthday was last Saturday, and my hubby has decided to get me a new pair of diamond studs, which would be an upgrade of the pair I already own. My current pair is 1.00 ctw, and I have NO idea about the cut/clarity/color. They aren''t bad looking, but the quality probably isn''t wonderful. When I bought them, I paid around $1,000, and I feel like I got my money''s worth. They are round brilliants, and they came from Zales back in 2002 (before I knew anything about the 4Cs).

Anyway, I am shopping for a pair of princess-cuts in the 1.50 to 2.00 ctw range. We actually already got a pair from an online seller who we had never dealt with before. (We''ll call this guy Jeweler #1.) Neither the hubby or I were happy with them, so we sent them back. They were supposed to be H/I color and SI clarity (supposedly eye clean), and 1.70 ctw. The size was probably accurate, but everything else wasn''t. The "appraisal" that this guy sent with them stated that the color was I/J (not H/I as they were supposed to be), and I think I/J was even generous . . . they were pretty yellow. Also, I could see all kinds of clouds and feathers and whatnot. No black inclusions, but they definitely weren''t pretty. My hubby isn''t a diamond freak like I am and he doesn''t know a whole lot about the 4Cs, but even he could tell that they weren''t what they were supposed to be. We paid around $1,500 for these, and the seller has offered to either give us a full refund or replace them with a pair that are also 1.70 ctw, but have a solid H color and SI1 (completely eye clean) clarity. Should I let him replace them, or should I just go for the refund? Also, it probably bears mentioning that he will only set them in 14k white gold, and I need to have them in yellow gold. (All my other jewelry is yellow gold and I really prefer the way it looks on me as opposed to white gold or platinum.) So, I''d have to get them reset by a local jeweler.

I''m also looking at a pair from a jeweler I''ve bought from before (Jeweler #2). He got me a three-stone necklace from this company for Christmas a couple years ago, and we are both THRILLED with it! I wear it every day and absolutely love it. It''s 1.00 ctw, set horizontally with the center stone slightly larger than the two side stones. The color was advertised as G/H and the clarity was advertised as SI (eye clean) and I think that''s exactly what I got. Try as I might, I can''t find a single inclusion . . . but I''ve never looked at it under magnification. Anyway, Jeweler #2 has a pair of 1.50 ctw princess cut studs which are G/H color and SI2/SI3 clarity for $1,749. Or, I could upgrade those to SI1 clarity for $2,399 (still 1.50 ctw and G/H color). Anything from Jeweler #2 can be set in yellow gold.

HELP!!! What should I do???

Well $1,000 for studs sounds inexpensive for studs of that size. What is your budget and we can help you look? I would not keep the 1.70 ctw for the price; I sort of think you get what you pay for. Can you up your budget or go smaller?? A well cut stone will sparkle like crazy. Glad you found Pricescope and welcome!

Skippy,

Thanks for the warm welcome!

The $1000 was for the 1ctw studs I bought at Zales about six years ago, and am now upgrading. The ones I bought, hated, and returned to Jeweler #1 were 1.70ctw and were around $1,500. Unfortunately, my budget is limited to about $2,000 or so. And SIZE MATTERS! LOL! I would really like to stay within the 1.50 to 2.00 ctw range. I can deal with not-quite-perfect clarity (especially since they''re earrings), but I would need them to have NO black inclusions and be pretty white (like G/H/I). Also, they have to be princess cut.

I don''t think either of the two pairs that Jeweler #2 has would be a bad deal, but I agree that the ones I returned to Jeweler #1 sucked. So, do you think I should just get a refund from Jeweler #1, or give him a second chance?

How low can I go on clarity and not have them look fugly?

Thanks again!!!

wow...if anyone can find stones in that size for $2000 or less I''d be amazed. I''d rather go down a bit in size and get decent color and clarity personally.

Ditto to the above. I just got some lovely studs from Whiteflash; I would contact them, Good Old Gold or Engagement Rings Direct. I would return the other earrings.

OK, I''ve already returned the earrings to Jeweler #1. I''m now wondering what specifications I should be looking for in a decent pair of princess-cut earrings (regardless of size). What color and clarity grades should I consider? Thanks for any advice you can give!
