Hi Guys

So I got my stone from Emerald Embassy and the colour is stunning. Could not be happier with the colour. It is absolutely stunning and just glows.

However there is a small nick on the girdle and a chip on the crown. This was not shown on the website or in the pictures. You have to look carefully to see it but it's definitely there.

Is this normal for an emerald or is something amiss here? What should I do? I love the colour so am wondering if this is normal for an emerald.

My previous stones from other vendors have always been blemish free.

Here is a picture I managed to take to show the chip.

Chip on girdle is at 7 o'clock on the stone and chip on table is at 1 o'clock on stone.

Here is a better pic of the chip on the table.

Hi! Yes, I would return it. I know you love the color and it's a bit of a pain to return, but I would still return it and get another emerald. This is a brand new purchase, and for me, I would want a perfect stone as a new purchase.

I do want to share with you that emeralds are fragile and can chip. My first emerald was chipped by me after the first month of wear. An emerald's physical structure makes them more prone to chipping than say, a sapphire, and if you put this into a ring, it is possible you will chip yours in the future, so just FYI for your consideration.

As FYI, I cannot see the chip on either photo, but I am sure it is there as you said.
Your stone is a lovely color, I like the lighter brighter greens and it has a nice glow.
But I am sure you will find another one. Good luck.

I think very fine emeralds, like the .0001% of emeralds, that are extremely clean and have faint to no treatment, are as durable as any other type of beryl (ex: aquamarine or morganite). The problem is that the vast majority of emeralds have internal fissures, and those that can reach the surface, that can make the stone more brittle.

Oftentimes, surface chips and fissures are filled with a polymer, but in this case, it doesn't sound like it. Surface fissures are common, but one located on the table is not as desirable. The chip on the table is not a good thing IMO.

Its unfortunate they did not disclose the chips before the purchase. Its one thing for you to have known and taken it into consideration when deciding. Its nothing but a disappointment to get it and find it to have two such chips. :(2

Return it - think this vendor is not cheap and you find a better one.
There is enough emerald in the market!

How disappointing :(2. I would return it. Personally I think it's pretty bad this vendor sent you a damaged stone without letting you know about it.

I would talk to the vendor. Return the stone. If you really like the emerald you can tell him you might be open to buying the stone again if it is re-polished. If you still like it after it has been re-cut you can purchase it again. Price will be determined on how the emerald appears and size difference after the re-cut.

Yes, some gems aren’t “perfect” and that’s ok in my book but any such imperfections should be identified and disclosed prior to purchase. It may be a simple job for them to repolish those chips away but it should have been done before the sale.
Lucky you noticed.

Another return vote on my end.

Hi Guys

So I thought I'd update you guys! Thank you so much for all your advice by the way!

I contacted Embassy Emeralds who explained that the two "chips" I was seeing were not chips but were open inclusions.

Embassy Emeralds did offer me several options one which included returning the stone and another which included a partial refund on the price of the stone. As there seemed to be a process around the return of the stone in terms of dealing with customs I have opted to keep the stone with the partial refund. I have no desire to deal with customs in this instance and as stated above I adore the colour. I may not have bought it if I'd known about the open inclusions but at the final price after the refund I'd rather keep it than try to fudge around with returns.

It is a round which means I can chose to spend as little as I want on a stock setting and still have a lovely colour to wear. If it was another shape I probably would have chosen different if I had to spend money on a custom setting.

ETA: Lesson learned - Ask about surface reaching inclusions on emeralds. I have always bought stones (not emeralds) that were listed as "clean" so never thought of this.

Now my next question is in regards to the "chip" on the girdle, do I dare to get a gem setter to hide it under a prong or should I leave that area well alone lest they completely demolish the entire stone when setting it?

Now that I have made peace with it I am going to enjoy it! Here are some pics!

Given the options: great choice! It’s an amazing colour!!! Looking forward to see it set.
I do not have any experience with emeralds, so cannot advice you unfortunately

Ladies!!! Need your advice in regards to setting this!

So I have a gem setter I've worked with several times who has set the sapphire and spinel for me and he always does a great job. Trouble is he works for a shop located in the CBD, which sells the settings for higher prices. I have used them in the past but now I am itching for a bargain. Just questioning how wise it is to suddenly be cheap.

Now I can take my emerald to the suburbs and save myself about $400 on a setting which would translate to more diamonds and more bling on the actual ring. Or just a cash saving in general if I don't buy a blingy setting. BUT the suburban guy specialises in diamonds so there is a risk he may crack my emerald.

Neither shop will cover damage to the stone (just the way it works unfortunately) and no I cannot buy a cheaper setting from Suburban shop to get the guy in CBD to set. They won't do it.

Also note the suburban people are SUPER annoying. Like REALLY annoying.

What would you do? Pay the extra $300 to $400 or take a gamble to save money. If the suburban guy can set my emerald I will have found a source of cheap settings for my ongoing gem habit.

I would not take a gamble with setting an emerald. Especially if the jeweller is specialised in setting diamonds.
Work with the annoying suburban jeweller if you have less vulnerable stones to set

It's standard practice that the setters will not take responsibility for stone damage over here and in Singapore.

I'd just bite the bullet on the 300-400 more and test the suburbs with a cheaper stone.

My vote is go with the trusted gem setter. Do not take a chance to save money. You love this beautiful emerald and want to maximize your chance at setting it successfully. The risk is not worth the savings IMO.

Good luck and cannot wait to see it:love::appl:

Thank you lovely ladies!!!! I suspected the answer would be this! Lol was hoping someone would say "Go for it" so I could use it as an excuse to be cheap!

Definitely yellow gold for this little baby! I am lacking in yellow gold rings will you believe it! No more white gold in the foreseeable future for me!

You have a beautiful emerald, don’t risk it for 300-400 $. Just image how you would feel, if the cheaper setter would damage it!!

It's going to be gorgeous and worth the extra money. No doubt in my mind. Good luck and cannot wait to see you enjoying and wearing it!:appl:
