Hi there,

Another clueless boyfriend looking for advice if possible!

I'm looking to design an engagement ring for my girlfriend. I don't have too much to go on, but I *do* have some images of a ring she said she liked in the past. I know they're not great quality but hopefully they'e ok!

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me to understand what sort of ring this is? It looks like a cushion cut solitare - is that right? Could anyone help me with a guide on what sort of carat size it looks like? And what I might be looking for in terms of the setting and prongs?

Thanks so much!

Kinda hard to tell but I think it’s a round (sometimes four prongs can make it look more square) in a cathedral solitaire

Agree with @Txborn79. Hard to tell in the lighting and not knowing ring size but my best guess would be it’s platinum and maybe 1.5-2ct?

here’s one example of what a cathedral solitaire looks like with 4 rings from the side with some gallery detail:

I see:

1. four prongs (so maybe looking a round stone look more square or actually a cushion cut)
2. cathedral setting for the stone (that is the shoulders coming off of the band to cradle the stone)
3. plain band (no pave or engraving of any kind)
4. not knife edge band (it is rounded or flat, knife edge is a specific look)
5. all photos w white metals (white gold or platinum)
6. cushion and round have similar features but are totally different, including the price point carat--per-carat.... so that's worth a little detective work (cushion costs less); it would be the more difficult/expensive thing to change in the future; simple solitaire settings are not a huge investment)

Good luck!

Looks like a modern round brilliant, cathedral four prong in platinum, slightly tapered toward the head.

I don’t think this is what is depicted in the photos.

Oh no certainly not, I wanted to share a clearer photo of what a 4 prong cathedral solitaire side view might look like.

No offense intended, my apologies if I was abrupt.

Agree with everyone here - I would call this a 1.5-2 carat round brilliant diamond set in a four prong cathedral solitaire setting. Something similar might look like this.

Where do you plan to purchase the ring? Very exciting!

Agree with previous comments but just want to note that the inspiration ring is fairly low set, looks like she doesn’t want anything too high off the finger. And I’d guess 1.5-2ct too, although it’s very difficult without knowing the finger sizes in the pics.

Thanks so much for your help on this everyone - so helpful! And if you have any recommendations for specific designs that are similar that would be much appreciated - but that's all really good information to go on for now, so thanks :)

Do you have a budget in mind?

This would be a good candidate for a low set, four prong, cathedral style depending on your budget for the diamond.

Ah, this is beautiful - thanks so much for sharing. It's really close to what I'm looking for!

Unfortunately I'm based in the UK however, and think I'd rather purchase from a UK company in case we need to resize, etc. If anyone knows any similar designs from UK companies I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Hi @calmc
We recently commissioned Simon at Bespoke Goldsmith to create my hand forged engagement ring upgraded setting. I absolutely love it, it’s perfect. It’s not the same design as the one you’re looking for but they can create something bespoke (as the name suggests!). I found him through fellow UK PSers who have also been happy with his work. He’s in Hatton Garden, a workshop, not a store.
