I have the opportunity to purchase a 4.07 carat Ceylon sapphire color-change ring for $8800. I just can't tell if this is a decent deal or not. There is a cert and it is HEATED. I don't have a huge problem with that but want to make sure for the money, it's 'worth' it. I know jewelry isn't typically seen as an investment but I want to make sure it's within the going price and not just getting ripped off. While I do LOVE the ring, I don't want to be seen as a sucker either... I'll attach photos. Thank you so very much.IMG_6125.jpgIMG_6128.pngIMG_6129.png

And the original asking price was 10,500.

Does it have a lab certificate showing heat only? It is a big sapphire and I think the color is pretty, but I think I see a window (someone feel free to correct me if I’m wrong). The setting looks expensive and lovely. What quality are the diamonds? That could affect the price. I would find out.
Rings in that price range are out of my budget. I think for a very special occasion, my husband might splash out for me, but generally I have a hard time judging whether or not something is overpriced when items go over a certain dollar amount.

He did say there was a window but it wouldn't be very noticeable when wearing it but that was the only downfall my jeweler could see. It's 18K and the diamonds look good to my naked eye but I've asked for clarification on the quality. There is a cert that reflects it is heated, but only heat (no filling).

Where is the lab report from? What lab?

Just a side note. These are not certifications, but lab reports. Labs do not certify anything, they just provide an opinion. :))

The stone color shifts to a purple according to the lab report, so if you're hoping it stays blue in all lighting, it will not. Typically, color shift sapphires like this sell for less money than blue sapphires, if all else is equal. It's still a very nice ring.

That’s a reputable lab btw.
There would be circa 2 carats diamonds there and they are of a decent size.
I think it is a good buy. I love it.
I would offer $8,000 and take it home.

Thank you TL. I’m fine with the color changing aspect as it’s a violetish blue. It’s the price I was most concerned with - if it’s a decent deal or not. I don’t need a steal, but a FAIR buy.

Yeah, if it’s that price for the stone and setting, it’s a good price. I agree that it doesn’t hurt to offer $8K.

Since the brief was done before it was in the ring..... a possible concern I'd have. Be sure the stone in the ring is the stone in the brief. Did the seller set the stone? Do they offer info on the diamond quality? Also be sure you see the stone between blue and violet which is where it will live most of the time. If all things check off, then Make an Offer..........you are in the driver's seat and the stone was evaluated in 2014......so it's been sitting somewhere.

This. It is as represented (lab) and is a sizable stone, set in a beautiful/well appointed mount. Nice claws!

Let us know what you decide.

cheers--Sharon

Thank you for all the advice. I’m waiting to hear the diamond classification and will make a decision a outan offer!

I wasn't able to offer an opinion on the price but I think it's a beautiful ring

Thank you LJSapphire. I'm really most concerned if it's a fair deal.....decisions decisions.

The ring is gorgeous. It seems to be worth the price but I leave that to the more experienced buyers.

Have you seen the ring with your own eyes? And do you love the colouring of the stone?

Yes, I have. That’s my finger in the photo. I love the rich color and clarity.
