I have never bought a setting on its own but I was wondering if if anyone had input on this stone:

in this setting which is on hold for me:

I thought the stone needed a halo or sidestones to make it pop more against my skin but this setting could work, I am just not sure about the size. My jeweler is pretty good here.

My jeweller said it would be expensive to make it work :(.

You're going to need to be careful with this because the angles of the pavilion will need to be pretty specific for those diamond support bars. They can't polish them to remove metal and make it fit. You might be able to get something custom cut to fit into it though?

Nice stone, good price and an AIGS report would suffice for me on a sapphire this color and price point.

The only thing is that I would personally set it in high karat yellow gold or rose gold. Violet stones pop in those metals. I think white metal tends to lessen the saturation a bit.

What about this tourmaline? It is 6.75 x 5.75 and is from the above link. My only hesitation is that the setting might be too nice for the stone, and the stone would pop more in YG.

TL - I agree on the gold colour and will pick a warmer gold for the purple sapphire.

Preg - I already happily own the sapphire and will post pics when I decide on a setting - probably a blue sapphire
halo since this won't work out (that is what I wanted anyway).

Freke - did you mean that with the tourmaline or the sapphire? I have come to realize that the sapphire will not work.

Well...good thing I said I liked your stone!

I would put it in that in a plain setting in a heartbeat.

The Oyo tourmaline is marked as sold already. I hope you got it!

Yup! The tourmaline is here too and I am considering it for this setting but it really was an inexpensive stone compared to the setting.

On any stones. I had a setting that was kind of similar, made custom for a diamond cushion, 6.5x7mm. I tried a 7x6 colored stone that had a keel, and it was too bulgy. I had it recut, and it was still too bulgy - a pretty major prong addition would have helped it fit, but it would have always looked awkward. My 5.8x6.8 was too small, and keel was too big, and my 6x6.2mm looked really pretty although a little bit small, so I said screw it, and paid for my jeweler to rebuild the prongs and stick it in there ($300).

I'm adding some pictures to show you a little bit of what I'm talking about. It's not just length and width that you have to look at, I'm afraid. Been there, done that, I really didn't like the t-shirt. :wall:

Adding a pic of a couple of the settings from my last post. You can see how open they both were, but they just wouldn't work for my stones.

Thanks for the helpful pictures. I don't want to go through all that and have to pay a lot more for modifications.

Sorry for the delay in posting too - I was hit with thr worst food poisoning of my life. :(sad

I hope you feel better this week. Yes, as with Freke, when it comes to CS, there isn't only the length and width consideration but the depth (and bulge factor).

Oh no, hope you feel better soon!

Thanks guys. I am finally getting better now. I am glad I did not rush and get that setting and I realize now how tricky buying used settings for non-calibrated stones can be!
