Hi everyone, I keep putting this in the wrong forum, but I think I have it this time.
I just purchased this star ruby set in 14k white gold with tested diamonds running down each shoulder.
I am trying to learn what style the setting is and if there is a way to tell if the piece is new or antique. Any opinions are most welcome!

I'm not an expert on determining age, but I wanted to say that it's a beautiful ring!

Thank you JoCoJen! You are my first response and boy am I appreciative.
Yes. It's a stunner. I think I learned it is in the Art Deco style. I am not sure if it's old or not, but it is in excellent condition except that the 14k mark inside the ring has worn a bit. I learned that during the Art Deco period they were into platinum or white gold (yellow gold was out of favor), tall bezel settings set with large exotic stones and single cut diamonds, and gold work motifs that were inspired by nature and many cultures. Apparently the period is when they were uncovering King Tut's tomb and people were mad for far away lands and cultures. I just love it!

One thing you can immediately learn from is if the seller characterizes or describes it as "Art Deco style" which means it is not from the Art Deco period---its later than that, done in the style of Art Deco. Some ethical sellers will only call a piece Art Deco (no "style") if they can accurately date it thus.

Another factor to consider is wear. If a piece is in the style of Art Deco, if it shows wear consistent with its age, you have a factor in favor of true Art Deco.

Nice ring, looks good on you. :appl:

Perhaps its a trick of the lighting, but in the first photo, the bezel around the stone looks different than the rest of the ring. By that I mean it looks smoother and like a slightly different color. It makes me wonder if the stone was replaced, or the the ring was rebezeled at some point.

Wow. I hadn't thought of that. I louped the ring and the metal color is the same. Also, the beading around the bezel is intact.
Of course, it certainly could have been re-done at some point. Good eye! :appl:
