Some of you have been following my search for a 6.5mm cushion tsavorite these past few months and I again thank you for your guidance and feedback. A few weeks back I posted photos of a stone cut for me by Swala. I was not wowed by it and board feedback seemed to support my opinion. After e-mailing Swala about my concerns, I heard back from them and was told that the photos were taken with an i-phone and didn't do the stone justice and that new photos would be taken. Somehow, an e-mail sent by Swala was not received by me and I was contacted by Swala again today and new photos will be forwarded tomorrow. There seemed to be some confusion on my part about the origin of the stone. I originally thought that it was cut from rough recently mined. Swala does cut cushion shaped stones and so I originally assumed that when suitable rough was located, a cushion would be cut and I would have first refusal. However, based on Swala's e-mails, I got the impression that this was not the case and that the stone had been recut. This has been confirmed by Swala. The original stone was a 2 carat stone. I was surprised as this had never been discussed and I had had other opportunities (Prima and BB) to have stones re-cut and turned the offers down. Also, since tsavs over two carats are quite valuable, I am wondering why Swala would be willing to make a 2 carat stone significantly smaller and less valuable.
In their most recent e-mail, Swala has described the stone as vivid green, mid to dark tone with a few inclusions that most would not be able to see with the naked eye. Cutting and polish is very good (I had requested an excellent cut). The gem was described as being without extinction and it was explained that every gem has dark facets that change according to the stone's orientation and that I was seeing the light bouncing off from one facet to another. I am unsure about this because what I saw looked like extinction to my eye and the dark areas I saw seemed to remain in the same spot despite rotation of the stone.
Any thoughts prior to my posting the photos tomorrow would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Not every facet is going to be lit up all of the time. Even any of the precision cutters' stones have some facets that are not lit up.

I highly doubt that they cut a 2ct tsavorite smaller to lose value, which is what you're suggesting. If the stone was over 2cts and they recut it, I'm sure there was a good reason for it. Like, maybe it had a window. Or an inclusion that detracted from it. Or maybe it got badly chipped. What does that matter?

I think, as you do, that the stone needed to be recut for one reason or another. I don't think Swala is fond enough of me to recut a more valuable stone into a less valuable one. Of course, it doesn't really matter how this particular stone came into existence but I was surprised a stone was recut when locating suitable rough was what had been discussed. I was very upfront about the cut quality I desired . When I saw photos of the stone, there was something about the cut that seemed a bit off to me and several others and I guess I am disappointed that it is confirmed that the cut is not the excellent cut that I am seeking. Hopefully, the photos will shed more light on the stone.

Nothing else to do but wait for the photographs now. I suspect the stone must have issues serious enough to affect saleability, hence a recut made more financial sense.
