Just curious, do Americans know that we''re having an election up here? Any news coverage? Does anyone care? (Is there a bit of a chill on American/Canadian relations?) Do you know what our main parties are?

Z. (Curious Canadian)

ps. is it ok to post this in this forum?

Now granted I live in the southwestern part of the US, so we tend to be more aware of what is going on in Mexico than in Canada, but I was unaware that you are having an election and I have seen no news coverage on it. Generally it seems to me that we Americans are all wrapped up in what is going on in our own little world!

bout time ya all threw the libs out.
Maybe ya all will get a better goverment out of it.
Couldnt have a much worse one.

I guess it like the George Bush election - there a lot of huffing and puffing beforehand but I predict that the Lib''s will probably win. This coming from a new Canadian that will not vote - I''m still a South African at heart!

1. Yes people here in SE Michigan are somewhat aware of the election because it''s important to know which party will be controlling the Windsor Casino.

2. Your parties are Liberal, Conservative, NDP, BQ and Tim Horton''s.

Ya, it''s definitely time for government change in both our countries.

yep, problem is in the US the 2 parties are different sides of the same coin and neither will change the direction of the country.
We need another Reagan and kick everyone in congress from both parties out of office.

I sure miss Reagan & his jelly beans.....ahh.....simpler times.....

I agree it's time to oust the current government, but, my goodness, not another Reagan!!!!!!! Although, frankly, almost anyone or anything would be better than Bush and his cronies --- a tree stump, a dog, you name it.

I'm a US citizen who moved to Canada 6 months ago. I can't vote in the upcoming election and must admit that I tend to follow US politics much more so than Canadian politics. Gotta work on that for sure. But, for me, as a general rule, the more liberal the better!!! Thankfully, it seems that there isn't the same kind of right-wing religious extremism in Canada as there is in the States. That's been quite refreshing for me and my husband.

hey demelza,
I too am an American who is a permanent res. in Canada. I moved here (south of Belleville, Ontario) almost 3 yrs ago after I got married. What brought you to Canada and where are you from in U.S.? I am from Rochester, NY.

My hubby would be thrilled if the lbs get the axe, but we will see soon! We will be in the Bahamas starting Monday (visiting hubby''s bro and family for 3 weeks!!!!) but we will keep eyes on news, and of course, pricsecope!

Hi Sophie!

I just got my permanent residence status. My husband and I moved to Vancouver because he got a tenure track position at the university here. I''m originally from Los Angeles, but we were living in northern WA for a while before moving to Canada.

How do you like it? Are you going to become a citizen?

So what do you Canadian PSers think of the election results?

The Liberals have been exposed as having an attitude of "entitlement", according to the results of the Gomery Inquiry into the sponsorhip scandal. (You can Google that if you need an explanation). Entitlement to our tax dollars without fear of reprisal, entitlement to the vulgar, on-going "ownership" of positions of high-rank and power where the Canadian people have had little influence. Too many examples to mention.

I''m not a Conservative by any stretch, but the Liberal party needed a spanking, a time-out, and a nap.

Unfortunately, I couldn''t vote in the election because I''m a US citizen, but I NEVER think it''s a good thing when a conservative government is in power. We just moved out of a country where the government puts more money into the military than education, where gay marriage is illegal and abortion rights are threatened, where social services are being cut in order to give tax cuts to the rich. This new conservative government sounds suspiciously like the one we left behind

One meaningful example of their tax-greed and arrogance is the Federal Excise tax on jewellery. This should be identifiable in it''s stupidity by most everyone here.
Until the last vote in the House of Commons, this hidden tax added 10% to the price of all jewellery items sold in Canada. The Canadian Jewellery Association has been lobbying for more than 60 years to get rid of it, as it made it nearly impossible to compete in an open marketplace.
The Liberal party has squashed any attempts in repealing the tax through all of their terms in office, which have been lengthy.

In the early spring, a new bill was introduced to appeal or scrap the tax, which has been proven to be unfair and punitive.
Not one Liberal member of the house voted in favour of repealing the tax. If they hadn''t been a minority Government, there would still be a 10% tax. Now, it is being phased out over a five year period. Currently 8%. It took a strong opposition for this to finally happen.
If the Conservatives have their way, it will be gone much sooner, and, good riddance says I, and many other jewellery manufacturers within Canada.

Well I''m not unhappy or happy with the results. I voted Liberal mainly because of the conservative stance on abortion and homosexuals...oh yeah, and I think practically all parties are gonna have some hush, hush dealings with money...it just depends if they are going to get caught or not.

WHAT I am terribly disappointed in is that in my riding, which for 20 years has been a liberal stronghold, because the voting was split between liberals and conservatives, they voted in the Bloc Quebecois. It was one of the great shockers in the Quebec portion of the election.....Grrr... The Bloc Quebecois has, in my personal opinon, only ONE agenda: Lobby for Quebec to seperate from the rest of Canada
29.gif
. I would have been happy with Conservative or Liberal, Or Green party, anything but Bloc Quebecois. On the interview with the winning candidate, he said " If we get 51% of the popular vote in Quebec, we are going to call a referendum to seperate from Canada."

It is strange (to me) that there is a major federal party whose purpose is to break a big chunk off the country. In other countries, such a party might be outlawed.

Agree that the Liberals did need to be spanked.

Z.

Well the Boc Quebecois only campaigns in Quebec, and is only elected to seats by Quebec. That''s why they said if they get over 50% of the popular vote then they will call a referendum because they assume they have enough support to win the referendum....it''s a bit scary to see who the support for the seperatist movements goes up and down.

Granted they loss the other two referendum''s...the last one they got 49% of the vote...so they were really close, they have declared that 51% is enough to seperate. I find it kind of hard to believe that you can establish your own country if 49% of the population is against it.... but what can you do. I figure they''re going to keep calling referendums until they eventually get the answer they want...while wasting our tax money on this type of vote and the campaigning behind it
29.gif
There''s a lot of wonderful things about living in Quebec, but this isn''t really one of them.

Just curious - what riding are you in?

Toronto remains a Liberal stronghold. 2 NDP ridings, 0 Conservative, the rest Liberal. The suburbs have conservative ridings, though.

I would think the Bloc is less popular in Montreal, more popular outside Montreal.

Z.

I''m in Brossard-laprairie. Our rep was Jacques Saada. Part of the reason is it''s only immigrants that live there. So sad. For many years we were really proud to be one of the lone south shore ridings that was NOT bloc quebecois.

The liberals dominated in all three of the largest cities in Canada (Toronto, Montreal & Vancouver), so that says something. It was time for a change so let's hope this change is for the good of Canada.
