I am hoping to have a 5 stone sapphire and diamond ring made, likely in a trellis setting. I have size 4.5 fingers and I am wondering, how big can I go with the stones??? Any pics would also be helpful.

A finger which is size 4.5 has about a 15mm width inside the ring. If one would lay out gemstones in a totally flat manner, 5 stones would only be 3mm wide to go from one side of the finger to the other. Of course, the fingers are cylindrical and stones get layed out in a curve which usually has somewhat less curvature than the finger so that the stones more or less face up to viewers. This may give you about 4mm in widther per stone although the design will dictate if you get a bit more or a bit less to work with. I am assuming a rather low profile in height. More stone elevation will allow more overall width as the curvature can be increased.

Slight graduation in stone size with a larger center and smaller sides will give you additional design flexibility. With a trellis style you are going for prong set in round or princess I'd suppose. Sharing prongs will allow larger stones than four individual prongs for each stone. Unless you opt for long ovals shapes, the total weight of the diamonds and sapphires won't be huge. Using all diamonds to estimate total weight I'd suspect total weight .75 to 1.60 depending on diameter and shape. Sapphires weigh more than diamonds, so estimating their weight isn't as descriptive.

I''d try to get to a jewelry store that has a lot of bands and see which size you prefer...

. I could not imagine a more complete response to my question. Thanks so much!

I was expecting that about 1.5 ctw would be my limit, and you have basically confirmed this. I think I will do a little browing at a B&M to confirm. Thanks again!!!
