What size diamond do you think is the most eye-catching and complementary on most hands?

WhiteDiamonds....

There is already a poll like this that I created months ago...about size of diamonds most preferred...please look it up.

Research a bit before posting. With your Ph.D. level education, you should be pro in this area!

Michelle

By the way, I can't find the poll you mentioned.
Is there a way to look up just polls on here?
This site has thousands of posts, I thought this poll is
Cool and will give me a lot of ideas for my diamond purchase..
Hope u r having a good weekend, Mara!

If you're serious about buying a diamond, try some well cut stones on and see what size and shape looks most complimentary on YOUR hand. Don't worry about anyone else and their opinion. If 9-12K IS the amount you ACTUALLY plan on spending, try nicely cut, colorless diamonds (as you've so many times stated you require) on in this price range. Everyone's hands are unique and you have to work with what you have, both physically and financially. Personally, I look best with diamonds between .8-1.2, but I have small hands and I'm small build. A three carat would make me look like I'm playing dress up. You may look great in a three carat, but the only way you can find out is by trying one on.

Also, regarding perception of color in colorless and near colorless diamonds. . .to see the difference between a G and an F requires LOOKING at well cut diamonds of these colors in REAL LIFE and deciding for yourself what you find most appealing. Our online views can't provide for you what could be gained by you checking out stones in person.

I find it curiously odd that you would consider spending such a large sum of money based on the results you get from polls AND from the opinions we all have here regarding the differences between an F and G colored diamond.

A 30 year old woman SHOULD have enough confidence to design her jewelry purchase around her own desires and likes not the views of others. But, if you do need more feedback, bring a friend or your spouse with you to shop.

Your polls and posts seem to run around in circles. . .do some serious research and read some more before going out and blowing your allowance on a ring or before even posting again, for that matter.

i have no idea what your real circumstances are, but it is exceedingly hard to take you seriously.

White Diamonds,

Here is the link to the previous poll.

Diamond shopping can be very confusing. There is soooo much about diamonds that regular people don't know. Most people walk into a jewelry shop, pick the biggest, sparkliest diamond available in a set that they like that is within their price range. They just buy and walk out the door. They are happy and life goes on. That's most people. The fact that you are here says you are not most people.

There is soooo much more to the appearance of a diamond than color and clarity ratings. A H colored, well cut diamond can actually appear whiter than a G color lesser cut diamond. The H color diamond's cut will maximize every spec of light and send it back out to the eye. You'll see lots of white light and color. The lesser cut G color diamond will throw light off in odd ways or leak light,.... possibly thru the girdle or the bottom (the pavillion).

Then there's table size, depth of the crown (the portion above the girdle), the crown angle, the depth of the pavillion (the portion below the girdle) and the pavillion angle. The alignment of minor facets of the crown and pavillion. Overall diamond depth. The thickness of the girdle. Take a look at the Tutorial Section on Cut. Here is the link. Take a look at the pictures of how light enters the diamond and refracts back out in various examples of cut.

Michelle is right. You need to get out and look at diamonds. But don't go to a regular jewelry store. Visit a Diamond Broker. Look in the yellow pages to find them. Visit several if you can. Diamond Brokers will have an assortment of colors and sizes of diamonds available for you to look at. They will also have varying levels of cut quality. See if you see the difference in the performance of a well cut diamond versus a regular cut. Look at different colors to get a feel for the color range the really appeals to you. Until you look you cannot say "I have to have D/E/F!" when a well cut G or H may be pleasing to your eye. Color costs money. When you move into the D/E/F range, you pay a premium. When you see a diamond that appeals to you, jot down the information. Get as much information as possible. Get the crown and pavillion angles if you can. Once you get home, use the Cut Adviser, plug in the numbers, and see how that diamond rates. That will help you get a better feel for what you want in the performance of your diamond.

Choosing clarity will vary diamond to diamond. The key to inclusions is size, type, color, and location. One dark inclusion near the girdle that can be hid by a prong or bezel could be much better than lots of crystals or a huge feather in the center of the diamond. The placement of some inclusions can cause structural issues in diamonds. You don't want a feather that breaks the surface of the diamond, especially in the girdle area. Clarity costs money. Don't say, "I have to have VVS or VS!", when you might find a great SI that is 100% eye clean.

Size of diamond is relative. Again, you need to look. Find the size that suits your tastes and your hand. What works for me may not be right for you. Also, size is not carat weight. Cutters find all kinds of places to hide carat weight. Hidden weight adds value. There are premium price points in carat weight. At .5, .6, and so on up to 1.0 carat, then again at 1.5, 2.0 carats, etc. Certain carat weights, like .75 and 1.25 are highly desireable and command a premium as well. A cutter could produce a fabulous performer that weights .98 carats, but a 1.0+ carat diamond is worth more. So the cutter cuts the diamond a tad deep, or makes a thicker girdle. There are many possibilities. Will the 1.0+ carat, lesser cut look visually different in size than the .98 carat better cut? No. But there will be a difference in visual performance. When you look at diamonds and see a size that you like, don't ask for just the carat weight. Get the diameter measurements.

Cut costs money. You can have 2 nearly identical carat weight G, SI1's. The better cut G, SI1 will cost more than the lesser cut G, SI1. Cutting is a skill. The better the cut, the longer the cutter took to produce the diamond. Possibly sacrificing carat weight that would push the diamond over a premium mark as well.

These are just some thoughts for you to ponder. Hopefully they will help!

Have you read WD's other post and polls????

Nobody here is even bothering to help her because everything she's posted is so ridiculous and unrelated to spending the huge amount of money on a diamond as she has suddenly announced she's planning to do, so I was just trying to put things in perspective. . .

Go and ***READ*** her posts before posting your constructive critisism

Mara! I did NOT just see you reply to this post, DID I?

Step away from the keyboard, girl.....the only way to stop the insanity is not to participate.

Who's participating now?! HUH! *stare*

That post was YESTERDAY. I was doing quite well in not responding to it today even though my fingers were itching.

The only thing Michelle has a PhD in is frustration, as most of us do, with WhiteDiamonds.

WhiteDiamonds, clean out the wax!!!!!

Mara,

I believe that would be "CLEAN OUT THE WAX!!!" and yes that would be yelling!!

To those sweet people here who posted great advice - thank you.

WHAT GIVES YOU THE RIGHT TO PUT ME DOWN & MY POSTS!
Well - excuse me, Mara! You already posted that post before!
I guess no one else on Planet Earth can do another poll like yours!

Are you telling me that when you asked all of your DUMB questions when you first got your diamond, or BEFORE U WERE EVEN ENGAGED U joined back in 10/2002 and got engaged months later (!) that you
were slammed like you did to me?

What makes u so perfect? MY QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS FOR LEGITAMATE
ADVICE is just as important as YOURS MARA! I'm not an expert! That's why I'm here! Trying to learn, but you girls really suck!

Michelle- You know what? I DON'T CARE WHAT U THINK! Don't help me then and stay off my posts! You have a picture of a baby on your posts - u must be a mom! Don't u teach your child to BE NICE TO OTHERS - AND SAY ONLY SOMETHING IF IT'S NICE??? It doesn't seem like it.

Al dewy- u seem to have a lot of knowledge about diamonds, I don't know why u team up w/ Mara and them.

Just had to vent; everytime I make a post and check it w/ excitement the next day to see what I could learn and see it's you guys making nasty remarks about me, it really sucks.

To all of you who wish to help, and talk about diamonds, thank you.

White Diamonds

FYI, your avatar isn't working.

Michelle

Sorry, but when I arrived here on 10/30/2002 as you pointed out...I didn't ask ridiculous questions like yours.

Let's see...I actually came armed with some pointed questions after reading some actual posts. I didn't act like a 12 year old and run a poll asking people if they thought that people get engaged only to put off marriage like 'all my guy friends' told me. That would be YOU.

I didn't come in here and not have any idea of what I wanted and do NO research except visit one jewelry store 2 months ago and expect everyone to help me by asking the same questions over and over. That again, would be YOU.

I did the research and lurked on the board before I posted. I visited store after store and tried items on. I only posted when I had a real question, which was about an antique stone and ring, which is far from redundant in terms of questions on this forum. I asked EDUCATED questions, with no 'multiple choice answers'.

So please, don't compare my entry on this forum to yours. It's not remotely the same and it's quite insulting. My questions were far from 'dumb' as you note...and I didn't post 20 polls that didn't work to determine how big I wanted my diamond size to be.

Please. Are you really 30 or 15? Do you really have a PhD or are you in high school which is the general feeling around here? The way you talk/type does not point towards a highly-educated 30 year old woman.

Are you even a real poster or are you a troll just trying to cause trouble on the forum?

If you are really serious about diamonds, stop posting. Read up on the *thousands* of posts that are asking the same questions you have already. If you can pull my history about my questions, you can also use the search tool to find relevant, useful information to your search. But until then...no more polls. Repeat after me, NO MORE POLLS. By hanging around and actually *listening* to what people tell you will get you farther than any poll will.

However, if you aren't serious about diamonds and you are just here to cause trouble, your days are numbered. You will be outed.

Hi Michelle, and thanks for your apology! I accept..

It looks though that Mara doesn't want to apologize. I certainly didn't expect one from someone like her. Her reply is exactly what I did expect, however. Defensive and catty.

As far as me "making trouble" she must learn to take a look in her mirror - calling me a "troll" is terrible. JUDGING SOMEONE without knowing them if terrible. By the way SHE's the one who is always responding to MY posts in a mean-spirited way...Maybe SHE should be worried about being "outed."

I have to do more important things now than talk about her,
like cook dinner and eat a meal.

Good night, ya'll and thanks for listening! Talk more about diamonds real soon!!

I picked 1.5 carats. I think that size is really big enough for anyone.
I prefer 2.0-2.5 carats.

White Diamonds:

1) I did not put down your posts. I was not even talking to you in the above post *at all*.

2) I don't choose to team up with anyone. I speak for myself.

3) There is absolutely NO POINT in giving you ANY advice about diamonds, because you don't listen to a single thing you're told. It's why I haven't participated in any of your questions to date, and it's certainly why I will refrain from answering them in the future.

Until I see that you are asking questions and WANTING to hear and process the replies....instead of what appears to be just asking questions for the sake of asking questions with NO intention of taking what people are offering you......until then, it's pointless for me to invest time trying to help you when you clearly don't want help.

Hi Kayla!

so you picked 1.5! That must look substantial on your hand.
I have a .75 h-i diamond w/ lots of floures., it's in a repro. antique setting my husband made for me years ago- so diamond look s bigger bec. it's surrounded by a metal frame/illusion setting.

If you could though you would get a 2 or 2.5? I am in the process of seraching for a beautifiul diamond, not sure of exact size. Budget is currently $9k. Hoping to add another 3k.
we'll see.

I heard about gemesis and apollo diamonds. I wonder how much a 2carat d diamond would cost? do you know? If it's still technically "real" than how much will it bother me?

Would it bother u at all?

At this moment synethetic diamonds are available mostly in yellow, orange, pink and blue colors. Colorless ones are not cheap enough yet to justify a mass production.

oooh, I bet your ring is gorgeous, WD! I love antique settings.

I was wondering if your current stone is certified as an "H AND I" or "H-I" or not certified at all?

Thanks,
Michelle

hello
I went to a couple of stores w/my fiance before he chose the 2carat that i got but i thought the 1 and 1.5 looked pretty on my finger until one day he asked the salesperson for a 2carat and of course as soon as i put it on my finger my face lit up like crazy i got all embarassed and i guess that's what made him choose the 2 carat! i think its all personal preference of what looks good on your own hand.

BTW Jenny,
I saw your ring. It's an absolutely stunner! I'm sure it looks fabulous in person.

thanks so much, it's so special! i wish i could post more!
