How do you decide which pieces to hoard and which to rehome?

Would love to hear about your thought process!

- Do I wear this one?
Oh wait, that doesn’t matter to me

- Does this one still make me excited?
I mean, maybe not right this moment, but I was thrilled when I got it, so it might do it for me again in future

- Do I want that money for something else?
Yeah, I do. But it’s only X, I could save that without selling if I just wait Y longer…

So really, about the only time I actually rehome something is when I’ve got multiples of it, or close enough :twisted2:

And I’m pretty sure this isn’t helpful to anyone else

Omg me too! Would love to hear other’s thoughts. I’m trying to cull and it’s soooo hard. I just sold something I really loved and listed lots of stuff. Part of the decision making process for me was I bought two nice pieces. So I want to sell some to offset the cost and feelings of guilt lol. I have a lot of rings so the “if I haven’t worn it in a long time” doesn’t really factor much into the decision making process for me. Sometimes once I actually decide to list the item, it crystallizes that I am okay with parting it. Of course, it is very difficult to sell things so sometimes the decision is made for me that way if an item doesn’t sell.

I have lots of things I don’t wear, but honestly, I can’t stand the thought of the amount of hassle it’d be to sell it.

I only really wear Bella, Bella’s friend, Marilyn, my heart pendant and I rotate my earrings. Occasionally I’ll wear my rainbow sapphire pieces, but other than that, everything else is unworn.

I haven't rehomed just yet. But I am separating things to rehome with my jeweller the next time I am allowed to do a project. I want the store credit. So gotta start organising early!

This first bit might not apply to you. I personally find sterling silver that isn't nickle free tends to be itchy. I have a bunch of silver from before I realised it makes me rashy and itchy that is going to go. I have some gold that is going to go for the same reason. I am only keeping a few pieces. Including my anniversary ring, a spacer or two, and two silver bangles because they aren't on long enough to cause issues. Especially the bangles because they roll around on my arm so much they doesn't sit on any one spot to get rashy. I usually start feeling it within a few hours.

After that I look at, am I wearing it? Because i tend to prefer minimal jewellery on since I am a mother to a toddler and have to do a lot of chores since I stay at home. Some stuff I will be dumping simply because I do not wear it at all and wouldn't even want to if i had the choice. I plan on following the PS bandwagon and kind of doing a capsule jewellery wardrobe. This way I don't have tons of stuff taking up space but still have the jewellery to wear for the occasions i need and want it for.

Third, who is it from? Myself? My husband? My other family members? I have some jewellery that is from my grandmother who is gone and worked herself sick to give me these things. So I do prefer to keep some things from her even if they aren't to my taste. I'm also keeping my original wedding set and my grandmother's set that we took the diamond from for the same reason. I also rationalize that my daughter may want my grandmother's set later. If she doesn't we can cross that bridge when we come to it.

Between all of this I'm hoping to keep a pretty pared down box. Not that I have oh so much now. But I do have some that I will be dumping ASAP.

@Austina Are you wearing your new gorgeous band?

Everytime Bella is on my finger, her friend is too @MamaBee

If I haven't worn it in ages, and I am able to calmly think of it on someone else's finger and in someone else's jewelry box -- then I decide I may sell it but I still sit on it for a couple of months to make sure.

If it is a loose diamond or gemstone and I haven't set it yet and even though it is pretty/beautiful it doesn't make me *want* to figure out and move forward on setting it -- then it can go in my "waiting for photos and listing" category.

If I am not sure, I always hold on to it.

The size of my collection is weighing me down; I am tired of having (non-sentimental) jewelry I don't wear and stones that I have no plans to set ... but I am inclined to inertia and procrastination, and I don't like to have too many listings up at once -- so there's that lol :)

I can barely make myself sell something. It has to be something I haven't worn and can get a substantial percentage of original cost back. So I really don't sell much. I just save it for my kids to fight it out!

For me, it’s contingent upon if I wear it, unless it’s an heirloom (those I keep) or a hard-to-replace piece. If a piece isn’t getting any wear, and just sitting in my jewelry box, I will sell it, most likely to fund some thing I will wear.
Not sure why I don’t feel the same guilt about our fun cars that sit in the garage…perhaps it’s because bling is for me only? Hmm…

@marymm I can understand the inertia thing; I just did some listings and I forgot how much work it takes to do! It shows me how much work IG sellers put into their accounts for example.

I tend not to sell things. If I have rings that I don't wear, it's generally because I figured out that the setting isn't right for me, so those I tend to reset. Other pieces, I may not wear, (maybe too dressy for my current life) but I really like them, so I keep them. Others often just won't bring enough money to deal with the hassle of selling. I didn't tend to keep good records of what stones went into which ring, etc. so also, giving a good description or even figuring out which cert goes with which stone, is very hard for some pieces. Sometimes I will give pieces to my daughter if I don't want them and she does. So over all, I rarely sell anything so I can't be much help. I wish I were better at purging. It does make sense sometimes.

+1!

Don't sell it just DONATE your stuff to me! There that was easy.....

HI:

When I look at my stuff and realize I have 5 blue rings when I only want/wear one. I am close to an estate shop that I have been with for 20 years. Makes it easy to change up my baubles.

cheers--Sharon

The only things I own that I don’t like anymore are costume jewelry. Maybe I should donate to Goodwill?

There are some pieces that I hardly wear but don’t want to give up and I am trying to fix that problem by resetting them in combination. So far the result has been two sweet pendants.

I would keep it all if I could. LOL

The only piece I ever rehomed was to my friend and it was because 1. I wanted a different diamond and 2. I wouldn't be able to get it without selling the other diamond. And 3. it went to a friend so it made it all good for me.

I knew my friend would love and cherish the piece and that I could get the diamond of my dreams so it was a win win situation for us both. She got the diamond of her dreams and I got the diamond of my dreams. Couldn't ask for a better outcome.

I do not wear most of my jewelry.
Part of that is due to the pandemic and mask wearing. Dangling earrings are more challenging to wear with taking masks on and off.

Also we don't go anywhere due to the pandemic. Grocery shopping and doctor appointments only.
And cycling most days. I don't wear bling cycling.

But to be 100% truthful I had rarely worn most of my jewelry before the pandemic. I love collecting but I don't wear much bling at all. If I was to take inventory I think I would be shocked at all the bling I have and do not wear.

Will I ever rehome these pieces? Probably to my nieces some day. I probably will not sell. But who knows. I cannot predict the future. Maybe, if I want something else that is pricey, then maybe I would change my mind. Like I did with the diamond I rehomed to my friend so I could get a different diamond. Maybe. But right now no. I am not a seller and I do not like parting with my things.

Even if I don't wear them. I get pleasure from just having them if that makes sense.

I have the same problem with wg earrings so I don’t have that many. I can wear them occasionally but my daily studs are platinum.
Fortunately (?) for me, I tend to wear the same things over and over so I don’t buy a lot unless it’s different from things I already own. I have rehomed several pieces recently to help fund furniture purchases for our vacation home. I didn’t necessarily have to but it made me feel better about spending that money.
Am I the only one who feels a little sad for jewelry that doesn’t get worn? Like it deserves a chance to get out and have fun?

I actually kind of feel that way too a bit. I'm hoping the silver and gold I eventually rehome with the jeweller can be sold by them if they like a piece or melted down into something that other people want and love to wear and repurpose the parts since it's lonely where we keep it.

I do something people might find silly though. Even the stuff I can't wear. I try to visit with my things so often. I put it on briefly and give it a nice bath and try to appreciate it while I'm doing that. Especially my original wedding set.

I actually need to get my ears re pierced. One of them closed up a loonnnng time ago. I'm hoping platinum ball studs do the trick since it works so well for my engagement and 3 stone rings. I've not gotten a rash under those once.
